This is my favorite new show! I have been harvesting Violet leaves and flowers from my yard for years. I have long wondered if the tubers, I weed from unwanted places, were edible. Thank you for helping me try them for the first time tonight.

Here in the West we have Malva neglecta or Mallow. All parts of that are edible es well.

cool. I just looked that plant up on the USDA plant database and it claims there are some here in CT also. Although I don't think I've seen any. There is a plant called malva moschata that I think I have seen, maybe I misidentified.

Several sources I’ve researched say the leaves and flowers are edible but the roots are not recommended as they are some kind of laxative. I am new to foraging but I’m just wondering if you have heard this before?

I've not heard of it before. A lot of this stuff just gets passed around the internet with very few original sources. the most I've eaten is an entire bowl in one sitting. never noticed a problem. There's probably some truth to it though.

Hello. Would the wild violet tubers you are harvesting here the same as wild violets growing in my yard and in alleys? So far, we have just harvested the leaves and flowers, drying them for tea for winter. Could we harvest the roots of our yard violets, too?

these violets are the same species that are common in yards around here. I believe they are viola sororia. I thought that pretty much all parts of all violets are no or low toxicity but I don't like to actually go by general rules like that. I would love a catalog of violets! Also, begin using a plant, you have seen through entire growing pattern, in small amounts before trusting it.
