In this video we'll forage some Yarrow from the wild to make our own Yarrow tincture. This is a powerful tincture that can be used externally and internally. Yarrow, or Achillea millefolium by its Latin name, is a powerful styptic and astringent herb that can be used to stop bleeding, relieve pain, and heal cuts and wounds. To make the tincture, you just need to simply collect your Yarrow and pick off the bad leaves. Then we'll take our good leaves and flowers and add them to our extractant to make the tincture. Once we've done this we just need to let it sit in a cool dark spot for up to 8 weeks. After that it is ready to strain and bottle.

I usually dry my yarrow and use in tea or grind the leaves finely for when I need to stop bleeding. Side note: use a smaller jar to avoid the airspace (oxygen is no tinctur's friend😉)

On a whim a few years ago I decided to do a steam distillation of yarrow flowers and the essential oil is a brilliant blue color! I suspect it might be due to azulenes as the color was very similar to common mugwort essential oil, but when I sent it off for GCMS I wasn’t able to conclude anything for sure. So I’m curious if the tincture will show any blue color but the extracted chlorophyll might overshadow it as it tends to do Hope you have a good weekend!

My Yarrow tincture usually comes out a dark greenish brown color. I'd like to see the deep blue you're talking about. Maybe I'll have to make some essential oil sometime.

40 % is the lowest amount usable. So basically as long as your alchohol is 40% or higher you're good. Most people use everclear and some use vodka. I prefer my tincture a bit more mild so I use vodka. It's really up to you and your preferences though.

@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 2 жыл бұрын
This can be used internally for easing pain and inflammation, to clear bacterial infections. Externally it can be used to stop bleeding and to help seal up wounds much faster as well as cleaning out the cut due to its antibacterial nature. There's several more uses but that's what I use it for the most.

Potentially a type of mold or fungus or even bacterial infection. Weconky want clean leaves that are green so we're getting just Yarrow and not any potentially harmful things from the potential infection of those leaves.

Obsessing over getting the yarrow dry doesn’t make sense. There’s water in the alcohol mixture. I take it you mean 80 proof when you say 40% alcohol. Needlessly confusing. The simpler the info the better. I use 80 proof vodka. This yarrow tincture really works.

Do you take this internally? Is there anything you shouldn't take while taking this yarrow tincture?
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 2 жыл бұрын
I use it internally and externally. I'd avoid things like acetaminophen and other pharmaceutical products that are processed by the liver because Yarrow is processed by the liver and it's an alcohol based medicine. Granted it's only about 20 to 30 drops per dose, but still better safe than sorry. It wouldn't surprise me if there's more but I can't say with any certainty. You might be better off asking your GP or PCP if you're really concerned about any contraindications.

It could be Yarrow but I couldn't say exactly. There are other colored varieties but the only two good for medicine are the white ones and the light pink/white ones. The other varieties have toxic elements to them. To be safe only use plants you can identify and know are safe.

Washing is important to remove possible contaminants like bacteria and small insects which would taint the medicine. Unless grown in a controlled environment like a greenhouse, one should always wash herbs before making medicine.
