In October 2011, Boaz Almog and Barak Deutscher from the superconductivity group at Tel-Aviv University led by Prof. Guy Deutscher, demonstrated how a superconductor disc is trapped in a surrounding magnetic field, a phenomenon called "Quantum Levitation" or "Quantum Locking". By using the exceptional large scale superconductors produced by Mishael Azoulay, they are able to demonstrate a quantum effect that, although well known to physicists worldwide, was never seen and demonstrated this way. In addition to developing new superconductor technologies and applications, the superconductivity group in Tel-Aviv University is dedicated to teaching and educating the young and adults about superconductivity, through the unique and counter-intuitive phenomena of 'quantum locking' and 'quantum levitation'.

OK, I agree that maglev is can also refer to dynamic magnetic levitation, but I'm speaking about the Meissner effect which has been known very long. Now youtube does not allow me to use links but if you just search for maglev Meissner you find plenty. Here one 1992 in IEEE Xplore "A demonstration of the linear Meissner effect using high-temperature superconductances" but the effect was discovered 1933 by Walther Meissner and R.Ochsenfield. I have seen toy train demos of this long time ago.

the video mentioned that the superconductor can hold up to 70,000 times its weight (correct me if i'm wrong) so roughly what's the maximum weight that the disc in the video can hold? i mean he doesn't seem to use much effort to move the disc vertically above the magnet.
@kimjadermark2468
@kimjadermark2468 9 жыл бұрын
King Kenny He is probably not lugging the finest discs his lab could produce around the world for demos, nor the strongest magnets money can buy... Not knowing the density of the material used, let's just say it is all Yttrium with denisty 4472kg/m³; 5 microns thick and maybe 6cm across. Scaled by 70,000 means that it would carry a 350mm cylindre, volume just under one litre, weighing of in at roughly 4,4kg. 5 measly microns!

When he says no friction, so the object itself doesn't slow from friction in air resistance? And only stops when it is heated up?
@thebeast5215
@thebeast5215 3 жыл бұрын
When he says no friction, he means no surface friction, like if you spin a coin on the ground, it will convert its kinetic energy to heat because of friction, and slow down. In this case, the ONLY friction it is experiencing is from air. So what he meant was no surface friction, since it is “locked” in air.

My thoughts: In the case of a "maglev" train, to place the carriage unit inside a complete or 99.99% vacuum, with the understanding that there is no conductive temperature transfer as there would be in a medium of air, supercooling the sapphire media superconductor would be necessary only at the beginning of the trip. the carriage would have no air resistance, and the superconductor would remain locked and other than acceleration, and deceleration, require no energy. Fascinating! Clear Lexan tube, and you can sight see at mach 6

So does this have anything in common with how planets orbit? through magnetic fields? And can we use quantum locking to manipulate the natural magnetic field in the atmosphere in order to create a "flying saucer" which doesn't need magnets below it? or am I talking rubbish?
@Immakingthiscuzihav2

This reminds me of how planted work in outer space. Space is vacuum sealed and super chilled as we levitate and orbit around the sun kind of like the magnetic field lines keep a certain distance from each other which is how the planets in any solar system work.

The first in a line of new telescope mounts 1. Design a magnet that fits into the dovetail of a 127mm Star Max telescope. 2. Place the magnet into the dovetail. 3. Levitate the 127mm Star Max telescope around the track for frictionless movement. 4. Achieve higher quality photos for ground based personal telescopes using the new Frictionless Quantum Trapping track mount. 5. Mount wheels on the telescopes dovetail mount that when turned by a motor, will cause the telescope to travel around the track. To keep the telescope balanced, an arm extending from the telescope mount across the track to the other track that then 90 degrees down and under the track and is fit with the same magnetic wheels, should keep the telescope balanced when traveling around the track.

What would happen if you stood on that little disk? would it be able to carry all that mass?
@PlanXV
@PlanXV 9 жыл бұрын
No the disk is being magnetically locked in space and is able to support itself only due to the interaction of the magnetic flux line permeating the disk. However a stronger magnet with a higher flux will support a disk plus its payload up to the integral strength of the magnetic field. Ideally a superconducting electromagnet with a superconducting disk with a substantially greater material thickness than 5 microns should in theory be able to support the weight of a car or even a train. Remember that the substrate material also must be reinforced as the compressive forces are greater as load forces increase. The key is engineering the sapphire coating and substrate materials sufficiently so that they are robust. At present superconducting materials research the specimen samples are just not engineered to the degree that can be applied to industry levels of use and availability.

Nice demo, but this princple has been denoted maglev or the Meissner effect as long as I know and it was discovered 1933 by Walther Meissner and Robert Ochsenfeld. First I didn't understand why to name it something else, but I got the explanation here: physics. about.com/od/ quantumphysics/f/QuantumLevitation.htm Inside each magnetic flux tube superconductivity is locally destroyed. The superconductor will try to keep the magnetic tubes pinned in weak areas (e.g. grain boundaries).
@partack1
@partack1 11 жыл бұрын
and you still get friction from maglev; where as the only friction here is the air resistance.

The same anomaly could be theoretically achievable through frequency resonance with the earth's magnetic fields, an opposing current could be applied to dictate directional propulsion, on a larger scale it could potentially be used for for aviation, speed and altitude being limited only to the frequency modulation of a secondary field and the extent of earth's primary fields. The larger the superconductive disk, the greater the the field of resistance. Just a theory, but UFO's could be designed on earth specifically for earth as the waves of radiation in space would be the equivalent of a kite in a hurricane, especially if said fields are as chaotic and unpredictable in space as we've speculated, Earth is your magnetic table, the superconductive material disk is a craft, to amplify the opposing and resonating field could take you to the inner and outer extent of a primary field, assuming the ability to manipulate the secondary is adequately adjustable within the respective boundaries of frequency distribution and potential distortion. Basically, these smaller alien crafts are bound to our magnetic field by their size due to limited surface resistance, which is exactly why they've been sighted by billions but never entering or exiting the atmosphere, mostly around the ocean, Aliens? or inner earthlings with unlimited superconductive resources we haven't yet discovered. They move through air as if it was water, they move through water all the same, water having a grounded amplification, saltwater and various minerals increasing it's conductive properties thus increasing the strength of resistance from secondary fields as emitted. It isn't a conspiracy theory, it's an attempt at understanding the potential loopholes in known laws of physics, clearly physics have no permanent laws, the only laws are theories based on our current neurological inadequacies. Are UFO's real? Yes... Without a freaking doubt🤓 are there major signs of them on earth prehistorically... Yup🧐, Sure are... Even a crap load of ancient mythology involving highly advanced god like beings within the earth. Was quantum locking discovered by analysis of ufo wreckage... Most likely. The point is that earth is a magnet strong enough to hold together an entire atmosphere and protect it from exterior fields, it's beyond strong enough to hold up a single craft, we just haven't figured out what frequencies to resonate with or against, but they certainly have. And since our magnetic field is so unique, these crafts must be uniquely designed specifically for it....or it for them. It's a bummer too, I was hoping for space aliens. Man I gotta start going to those AA meetings 😑

What if we use superconductors to make a flying saucer that can transport humans into space? The superconductor would be supercooled from the inner wall with reusable/recirculating coolant and then when it reaches space it can stay cool because of how cold space is. It can travel with boosters in space extremely fast since space is a vacuum using less fule and being more enegery efficient. Space X could utilize this technology and encorporate a living quarter capsule in it...Who knows, what people see as UFOs or "flying saucers" might be either humans from the future utilizing this technology or another life form that already is utuilizing this technology. Pair this idea with quantum computing and messages can be sent back and forth through space faster than the speed of light...🙀

That's much more similar, but still not the same thing. The Meissner effect doesn't rely critically on field quantization, so belongs much more to the realm of classical physics than does quantum locking. Perhaps you could call this a "quantum/quantized Meissner effect," but it's not an obvious consequence of the classical Meissner effect by any stretch of the imagination.

Its nature is quantum mechanical. Hard to explain in a KZbin comment, but Google "quantum locking" or "flux pinning". Basically, the magnetic field lines get trapped individually and hold up the object, so it's sort of like a shish kebab, where the poker is part of the magnetic field.

Synthetic sapphire produced from agglomerated aluminium oxide. It will get cheaper over time. World production was a few thousand tons over the last decade.
