I marched with protestors of all the major faith traditions at Harvard on a Friday in May. I finished my master's degree from there last spring, but my parents are a construction worker and nurse who didn't graduate high school. The most I've made in a year is $28,000. I have seen murder, suffered extreme physical trauma, and am quite familiar with dangerous environments and crime from childhood. I have degrees in political science and history; all this was paid for in large part by the state of Indiana and the federal government, obviously not by me or my parents. Disability is a real wage suppressor. Now, you might think that all was wasted based on my political affiliation or maybe even my financial performance. How Puritan of you! For my part, reading these comments and watching that farcical hearing, I'm again baffled at how little of the DNA of our country's democratic, civic, and liberal heritage manages to join that Protestant flint. It's sobering, really, how tenuously we hold our collective privileges of freedom of expression, organization, and protest and how pressing groupthink and authoritarianism are. That your comments do not properly weigh the severity of Israeli crimes, the diversity of protestors, or the questionable legitimacy of state violence is disheartening to say the least. I come from English/Scottish stock. My family has lived in northern Indiana for several generations. They'd be Methodists if the general wear of the Rust Belt hadn't stripped poor folks of communitarianism in their religious lives. This is all to say that the only dogs I have in the fight for Palestinian liberation are America's deep complicity and my own human values. As the kids say, don't @ me.
