I retired from the Army in 2010 and immediately moved back. I live, literally, about a mile from the Port of Balboa. We also have friends that work for the canal. I say all that to show that I probably know what is going on with the canal than this braying jackass. The Chinese are NOT in control of the canal. As for the ports on both ends of the canal, you are not being told the full story. Each end has ports that are divided into smaller sub ports and Panama has contracted out for companies to run these sub ports. Of the 5 subports in Balboa, one and only one is run by a Chinese company. There are one or two that are run by American companies also. If we were to try and reclaim the canal it would cause an irreversible fracture in the relations between Panama and the U.S. If you want to see the U.S. fully pushed out of Panama all you need to do is try and reclaim the canal.

The setting of tariffs for the Panama Canal is conducted in a transparent and public manner. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) holds international public consultations before implementing any tariff adjustments. This process includes: 1. Publication of Proposals: The ACP publishes proposed tariff changes so that all interested parties can review the details. 2. Reception of Feedback: Clients, maritime associations, and port operators can submit comments, suggestions, or concerns. 3. Public Hearings: Open hearings are held where participants can directly express their opinions. 4. Analysis and Adjustments: The ACP reviews the feedback received and adjusts the proposal if necessary. 5. Approval and Communication: After approval by the Board of Directors, the final tariff is publicly announced with sufficient notice. Tariffs are applied equally to all countries, regardless of nationality. If the United States or any other country wishes to seek preferential rates or propose adjustments, they are encouraged to participate in the international public consultations conducted by the ACP. This is the official and transparent process for submitting suggestions or concerns about tariff structures. Additionally, if the United States is interested in port operations related to the Panama Canal, it is worth questioning why they did not participate in the public bidding processes for port concessions. These bidding opportunities were open and transparent, allowing any country or company to compete fairly for involvement in port operations. Furthermore, the security excuse that the United States is currently presenting could jeopardize global trade. By trying to impose restrictions under the guise of security concerns, they risk disrupting the smooth flow of goods through one of the world’s most crucial trade routes, potentially affecting economies worldwide. Panama has always prioritized neutrality in global conflicts and does not want to be dragged into the ongoing tensions between the United States and China. We remain committed to keeping our role as a neutral and peaceful facilitator of global commerce, just as we have always done throughout our history. Active participation in both consultations and bidding processes is the proper way to influence decisions, as the Panama Canal is committed to maintaining fairness, equity, and transparency in its operations.

How much ignorance and nonsense in the statements of this gentleman. The ports exist on both sides of the canal, not because of China, but because they won the tenders, and there are more than two. As they say, it seems that only Chinese ports exist, but there are ports owned by other companies from other parts of the world. If companies from the United States had bid, perhaps there would be a port owned by a company from the United States.
@thomasvilla610915 күн бұрын
The company that operates the ports is a Hong Kong company. That presented no problem at all when Hong Kong was an independent, democratically-governed city-state. Now that HK is an indistinguishable part of Communist China, this presents a grave national security threat to the US and region. The situation has changed. President-elect Trump has placed the world on notice that the threat needs to be addressed. Rest assured it will be, preferably in some manner that is beneficial to both the citizens of Panama and the US.

In 1880, a French company began construction on the Panamá canal. Over 20,000 men died during early construction. By 1902, the company had gone bankrupt and equipment and the uncompleted project was sold to America for $40 million. In 1903, in an American backed revolution, Panamá declared its independence from Columbia. President Teddy Roosevelt signed a treaty with Panamá in 1904, paying $10 million in exchange for a perpetual lease on the land with annual rent of $250,000. The cost of the canal was $375 million; almost 6000 men died, of which only 350 were white, American citizens; the canal was completed in 1914. Because a non-resident Panamanian representative had entered into negotiations without the formal consent of the new government, many Panamanians questioned the treaty’s validity; tensions continued to grow, culminating in a 1964 riot. By 1968, Panama’s president lost his election and in less thanks two weeks the new president was deposed in a military coup and negotiations had to begin again. In 1975, a new agreement was reached w/ President Ford: America was to be given permanent USE, but the control and upkeep of the canal would be given back to Panamá. Upgrades, paid by Panamá, were made and in 1976, and Reagan and Ford vied for president on the Republican ticket ~ Ford wanted to sign the treaty, Reagan did not. That year a Democrat (President Carter) was elected. President Carter signed the new treaty and the canal was turned over to Panamá. However a SECOND treaty was also signed, which gave America unrestricted access to the canal. We agreed to pay the same amount as other countries for transit, but if our access is threatened, our military has the right to step in and protect the canal. Since Latin America’s governments are inherently unstable, we continue to pay the same transit as any other country. However that amount is not as costly (politically or money wise) as control and upkeep ~ and we still have unrestricted access. Almost 6,000 men had died during construction ~ of which only 350 were white, American citizens. I find it interesting that during Trump’s 1st presidency, the Trump organization was “kicked out” of Panamá and forced to relinquish ownership of his international hotel/casino, which had become an unending scandal of bankruptcy and money laundering. And now in 2025, Trump demands the return of the canal to American control…so what do you think?

The US was a bad negotiator and still is today, the same way Russia negotiated poorly at the moment of selling you guys what today is Alaska. The US has to understand that Panama's strategy was smarter, that's why they won the political and diplomatic battle at that time and re-gained what was always theirs, because at the end, the canal is in Panamanian territory.

@MarzLast Everything You Didn’t Know About the Panama Canal (But Decided to Have an Opinion Anyway) The setting of tariffs for the Panama Canal is conducted in a transparent and public manner. Well, it seems some in the United States need a little reminder: the Panama Canal was built in Panama, not the United States. So, while some may want to give orders, it might be good to remember we’re talking about Panamanian territory, not another state of the union. Trying to command on foreign soil really has its bold touch, doesn’t it? Panama has always considered the United States a valuable ally. However, with the current stance by Donald Trump, it makes one wonder whether the U.S. is truly interested in maintaining an alliance or if they are simply trying to reclaim land that never belonged to them. This shift in position raises serious questions about their intentions. And let’s not forget-Panama did not pay for the construction of the canal in money, but rather by being stripped of its territory. We were never properly compensated for what we lost. History should be revisited to fully understand the price Panama paid, which was far greater than any financial transaction. Active participation in both consultations and bidding processes is the proper way to influence decisions, as the Panama Canal is committed to maintaining fairness, equity, and transparency in its operations.

@anelcanto16 күн бұрын
There are programs like USAID and other NGOs that might give a little money to certain causes here and there. But if all of those little aids were taken away it would have 0 effects on Panama. That ain’t some tiny village in Africa. During the 2008 resession us was hit bad but panamas economy fared pretty well comparatively. Panama just doesn’t live on credit as much as Americans. People don’t buy everything with credit cards as in us, people use debit cards for most things (by the way using debit cards/cash is the normal way to pay day to day-stuff outside of US)

No, the US can't take control of the Canal. Nothing in the Treaty has been broken nor does it give such authority. Military intervention by the US would constitute a violation of neutrality which in fact is worded in the document and Panama could act against the US accordingly...with the help of proxies likely.
