As a judge, an oath is taken to be neutral and fair when listening to testimony and ruling based on PRECIDENT developed under upper court rulings. All current judges, even SCOTUS, began as attorneys, with their own opinions and beliefs. Hawley, Cruz and company all know this to be true and are purely playing theatrics.

Lawyers who work for clients make arguments in court that they don't necessarily agree with all the time because they are trying to win a case for their client. That's their job. In other words, her inability to remain impartial on case law is being called in to question as a jurist. The setup was giving Perez several questions where Hawley knows her past public comments regarding the Supreme Court decisions, then Hawley throws Perez a layup that he knew she would accept as correctly decided. The structure of the questioning was designed to get her to admit that she can't remain impartial to case law. She took a full bite from the poo sandwich and didn't even have a good out for it.
