Forbidden Planet… Named after a GREAT movie, with an all electronic score, which was trail blazing for the mid 1950s. Great animation as well.

Great and awesome vid & review Mattias. Always on point🙌. Out of curiosity, you don't use Bitwig for composing? I thought that was your main all purpose sequencer?
@MattiasHolmgren

Hi, thanks! Pleased to hear you enjoy my content! I use three DAWs mainly for all my work. Bitwig Studio, Fl Studio and Logic Pro. It all depends on my mood and what I'm composing. Bitwig Studio is allround, Logic for orchestral, FL Studio for some electronic / hybrid tracks where I want to work quickly in the piano roll. We can make any music in any daw though. It's just personal preference and I played with all these apps for many moons. I'm a tech savvy guy too and switch to what feels right. ☕😄💫

Another great video, Mattias! Nice review of Forbidden Planet👏. Unfortunately, I just don’t have the PC power or the space to run EastWest Opus. I know Composer Cloud is fantastic value, so for sure on my next system! 👍
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Les, what's your current PC setup? Yeah recent plugins do demand a bit of the computer. I was running on an M1 Max MBP and I don't think the plugin is truly fully compatible yet. Because I was experiencing some high cpu spikes, but only when having the Browser page open. The other pages in OPUS was performing nicely. But I swear by East West products and have been using them since ages for many many game scores and media projects. EW Symphonic Orchestra, Hollywood strings /brass, RA and Storm Drum 1 & 2 are all over my songs. I think I've spent like €10K on just EW libs through the years. 😭😉☕🌞 But Composer Cloud is VERY attractive price. Great for new composers / producers. Cheers!

@@MattiasHolmgren Hi Mattias, my setup is a bit underpowered. A nice HP laptop, but only an i5 with a 2tb HD, and 8gbs ram. I also use a 2012 Mac Mini partially upgraded, but need to increase the ram to 16gb from 8gb, and get another internal SSD. Yes, I know EW make great stuff, and they are a “must have” with many composers. I was so close to buying the old EW Hollywood Orchestra Diamond edition in sales numerous times, but never did. 🥺
@M4T
@M4T 2 жыл бұрын
I have been a Composer Cloud happy customer for years. The price is ridiculously low for the amount of libraries. As long as you have a bunch of SSDs or M2s, this is just perfect for any style (those that I like at least!). EW is main library, all the time. I am surprised that this new Forbidden Planet collection is so underrated. This is a fantastic tool. I hope your video will motivate people to go for it! Keep up the good work.
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephane, happy to hear you enjoy my videos. CC would be a nobrainer if I started composing today. I own most of the old EW libraries (bought them boxed) the orchestra has been on countless of my albums and game / film projects. The new OPUS plugin is awesome and the way it handles the libraries so we don’t have to download 180000GB just to use one patch from, say, RA or StormDrum 3. That’s a sick feature!

@@MattiasHolmgren Agreed, I keep working with an old I7 from 2015, doing decent pieces (I mean in terms of track numbers not quality!), I can keep up with close to 80 Opus tracks before it dies ... impressive VST.

Thanks Mattias, great run through. I wanted to like this so much, but at the end of the day, I found it to be just another sample library with an XY fader, in a world already filled with them, especially for the standalone price which also seems to live on a forbidden planet.
@MattiasHolmgren
@MattiasHolmgren 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah, if you already own Omnisphere 2, or a similar pack you might already have this ”sound category” filled. Composer cloud though is a very attractive choice for new producers though since you don’t have to shuffle out your whole salery and savings to get started with nice sounds. I don’t wanna think about how much money I spent on epic libs between 2000-2010. 🤣 Another great feature I didn’t mention in the video regarding using OPUS is that you can browse patches from various libs and only download those specific patches without the need for a 100GB download. This is super useful, especially if you want to save disc space and only use a fraction of the sounds of the libs… I wish they had that function ages ago!!! 👌🥁🥳☕️ Thanks for writing Daniel!

@@MattiasHolmgren Agreed, it fits very well within their subscription model and the sounds are really fantastic. If a dev were to read this, I wouldn't want them to think I'm trashing the product by any means. I definitely don't want to add up my music expenditures either haha!!

Hi Schmook, totally agree, Forbidden Planet is a very detailed instrument to discover. I scratched the surface of the planet. ;) The touchpad I am using is infact a Wacom Intous Pro tablet with multitouch feature. So I'm basically using it as a mouse + finger gestures (pinch etc.) to navigate and zoom in the apps. It's super convenient and great for ergonomics. Buy Wacom Intous Pro (amazon affiliate link): amzn.to/3mJVd4d I did several videos on my setup and why i just love working with the tablet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH7ag5-pfLKUe8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/aajVo3uXltitnas I have affiliate links to most gear that I use here (if you want to support me on the way of grabbing a product): www.morningdewmedia.com/resources-for-music-production-and-video/

Hi Forbidden Planet is hosted within a plugin from East West called OPUS. That's the one I'm talking about in the demo a bit too. So you need to install Opus. They have good instructions and it's not that big install. The great thing about Opus is that you can install specific patches from a EW library, rather than needing to dl the whole thing. ;) SPeeds up the process if you just want a few patches from the libs...and don't bloat your disc. ;) I think it's a great app with tons of sweet plugins WITHIN Opus too, like SSL compressors, eq, convolution reverbs etc. Glad you enjoy my Forbidden Planet presentation! Thanks!

I have had several hardware synths since the mid 1980's, plus dozens of software synths now. Forbidden Planet covers the rich and creamy analog classic sounds better than anything else that I have. What is new here is that the presets are musical and useful - a collection of the best, most pleasing patches of analog lore - the carefully collected fruit of legendary gear that I have no desire to own but can now benefit from. What is done better here is that those delicious sounds may be extended with a variety of effects and other modifications.
