I have plans on making a much more definitive dosimeter video in the next couple of weeks since there isn't much knowledge about them on KZbin. Stay tuned. In the meantime here are US Civil Defense guidelines: Less than 50R no visible effects. 50-200R acute radiation sickness will occur, but will recover if treated. 450R 50% deaths expected. 600R 100% deaths expected within two weeks.
In England we go to our sheds. In the USA it's a full nuke shelter.

I recently purchased a CDV-742 Dosimeter pen for a historical collection, checking the scale upon receiving the item the needle is set at 150r. I haven't received a charger box yet to reset, but what is or is there a danger of contamination if the pen reading is at that level?
@ForbiddTV4 жыл бұрын
No, I have thousands of these and whether they are at zero or completely off the scale, no damage to the dosimeter. Since we haven't had 150R exposure in the 60 years since that was built, it's a false reading. See my long dosimeter video for more info. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqS3ooqvrd-lpZY

Hello Craig, I have a question regarding three dosimeters I just recently bought on eBay. When they first arrived I checked them to see how much gamma radiation they accumulated. one of them had 20 roentgens, and the other two had no bar going perpendicular to the bar going horizontally. So when I went to reset the first one the bar going vertically to the bar going horizontally disappeared. And in one week they haven't reappeared. I have tested placing the dosimeters near radioactive objects like uranium ore, and some radium check sources, but I can't seem to bring the vertical lines back, are my dosimeters broken?
@ForbiddTV8 жыл бұрын
+Lord Dubious 22 It doesn't sound like you are using the dosimeter charger correctly (or it isn't working properly). Also, the dosimeters you are using sounds like they are likely the 200R range and you wouldn't have anything hot enough to make those needles move. The fact that the needles were off scale or reading 20R isn't due to radiation, it is due to drifting of the reticle. After resetting, as long as the reticle hasn't moved in about a day (I observe drift after a week when I test them and if they haven't drifted in a week I deem them without perceivable drift), the drift is of no concern. They aren't for long duration measurements.
@nyolcvankilenc19528 жыл бұрын
ForbiddTV I am using the 200R dosimeters, they are the CD V-742 models. But I watched a KZbin tutorial on how to operate the dosimeter charger, I put the D-cell battery in first, then I held the dosimeter down on the charger connect, and then the vertical line disappeared.

how long does one last without charging?
@ForbiddTV5 жыл бұрын
Fico Х0Х :з That's not how they work. Anything more than about a day is not their intended use. Ideally they should be charged (zeroed) right before use. "Holding a charge" generally only means the drifting is so low that the reticle stays put for long periods of time. But a long term reading (anything over about a day) isn't going to be a reliable reading. A more detailed dosimeter video I did: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqS3ooqvrd-lpZY

@ForbiddTV6 жыл бұрын
No. Even a 200mR will not accurately read background radiation. It wouldn't visibly budge in a week and dosimeters aren't really designed to be accurately used for more than about a day because all dksimeters can drift over time.

@@ForbiddTV sorry about that 😅. thanks for the explanation. I’m starting a project to integrate a dosimeter as an accessory because I often work around radioactive materials.
@ForbiddTV2 жыл бұрын
For your job? Most countries have agencies that would regulate that, OSHA in the US. In the US you would have a film badge for lower risk exposure potential that would get exchanged quarterly, and a 200mR dosimeter (usually electronic these days) that gets changed out with each working shift if you are at higher risk. If you get any dosimeter you would want the most sensitive you can find (200mR) and even then you won't find anything unless there is a problem.

Hay Craig! I decided to experiment with a bad dosimeter, where the needle would loose voltage quickly. Like within a minute! So thinking about a NICAD battery, that gets a memory. I tried this experiment. I charged the dosimeter several times, setting it to zero. It leaked fast. 0-40, in under 1 minute. So next I set it to 200 and slowly brought it back to zero. Now, the manual says the 1.5 volt battery charges the dosimeter between 220 volts? So, if 0 = 220 volts AC, then what voltage is to the left of zero? Is it like volting a nicad battery?(Depleting the charge all the way, then recharging?) So, I took it to the left of zero, and took the pointer near the edge of the glass...it suddenly started to discharge slower. I have now done it several times, and it appears to be working and getting a leaky dosimeter working again. Give it a shot and post what happens. Be nice if I can get a leaky dosimeter back to 100% working.

Daniel Morris can use whatever you want, but you are under the false belief that you will find radiation in seafood from Fukushima, which is totally incorrect. No Geiger counter in the world will allow you to detect 'contaminated' fish or seafood. You will need something called a mass spectrometer if you think you are actually going to detect something.

Daniel Morris what you wrote about is a HF Detector, it’s for radio frequencies. It has nothing to do with radioactivity at all. You could easily understood that reading what you posted yourself without being an expert.
@ParkerUAS5 жыл бұрын
@@danielmorris9803 , I highly r reading more about radiation. While charcoal (carbon) does absorb it, it can also reflect it (graphite doing this is what caused the power surge and explosion at Chernobyl). There are a mul9of types of radiation. Light is radiation, radio waves are radiation. What you should be concerned with is "ionizing radiation". This is radiation with enough power to strip an electron off of an atom. There are different types (Beta, Gamma, X-ray, etc.) each with unique properties. Radiation in the food chain isnt a major concern unless you are getting food from within an exclusion zone. Since 1945, there are radio-nucletides across the planet. However, they are diffuse enough to not be of any real significance. You get more ionizing radiation from just being in sun light. I am not saying you shouldn't be vigilant, just that there are not any significant risks if you are eating local foods in the UK.
