Hey, I have something in common with Shane! I too unexpectedly scratched the exact same way he did at 8:32. I had a very slight angle and figured it was enough to bounce off the short rail but it ended up scratching instead. There are many hidden traps and pitfalls in this seemingly simple sport which is anything but!

I gotta get in there at 11am sharp when they open to try to get an hour or two in. Gotta crunch, time is limited 🎱

Is stripe width a universal standard among ball sets? In other words, does using the upper-stripe-edge reference as illustrated always result in the same offset?
@MitsuoRLCoach
@MitsuoRLCoach 10 ай бұрын
some balls are different size, but if you have 2 sets and they are standard pool size then the stripe width should match and be a "standard" width. In my experience at least. Never seen it the other way.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 10 ай бұрын
The "standard" stripe width is half the ball diameter, but not all ball sets follow the standard. An easy way to check is demonstrated in the video here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/sidespin/maximum/

Dr Dave, what do I do if 8 ball is blocking pocket and my only ball left is touching the 8? Is there strategies to dislodge my ball without knocking the 8 ball in on the same shot? This has happened a few times over the years I think the rule in 8 ball is the 8 ball must be made last before my object ball to win on a different shot.
@davesmith3530
@davesmith3530 8 ай бұрын
I should clarify I'm saying when the 8ball is extremely close to pocket, like less than an inch
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 8 ай бұрын
If your opponent doesn't have any other balls on the table, or if there is no easy way to move your ball while playing safe, the best you can hope for is a "stalemate" (assuming your ball blocks all reasonable opponent access to the 8).

personally im much better when it comes to shots with topspin as apposed to backspin, i have always been better at playing force follow shots and controlling the amount of topspin, but when it comes to backspin i still struggle to control the amount i want to draw and i can barely play a deep screw to save my life and sometimes i even fail to draw at all. id say that when it comes to backspin my consistecy and accuracy is about a 4/10 while with topspin its 8/10. i assume it just points out to things in my technique that are lacking and i must fix
@DrDaveBilliards

This is common. Draw is much more difficult to achieve and control. For help with draw, see the videos and info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/draw/advice-and-drills/

Start doing thoracic spine mobility to get the upper body in position. Be sure to bend your elbow to be able to generate room for the backstroke, practice in front of a mirror at home to check alignment. Check some of my short videoes where I show progress practicing sidearm jumping. I now jump a lot better then whats expected at my level. Don't know if that's a good thing or not :D
