The knowledge given here is priceless if you want to be a good or even great pool player. I never get tired of watching Dr. Dave teach pool even if I already know what he's teaching. I always pick up something I didn't know and in this case I picked up a lot of things I didn't know. Playing on instinct is better than nothing but knowing is better than instinct.

Thanks, Dr Dave. I spend a lot of time during my practice sessions setting up a shot and testing cue ball reaction to my stroke. The information you've provided here on the expected paths is most helpful, and you've given me a much more organized, more focused approach for learning to get out of the corners -- something I've seen go wrong so many times. My next practice session at the table is now planned. Thanks again, your videos and web site have been very helpful over the years as I study this game.

I don't like most of these videos but this one is good I think. Hanger's can be quite useful and easy, but instead players trip up over them. Its' just a short matter of learning how to handle them, but because pocketing the ball is easy, they give them no thought (also showing they are 100% shot pocketing and 0% position). But one thing not mentioned, is people seem to forget to play the shot just like any other shot. If you cut it, it's gonna come off on tangent, and then if you shoot with forward, it pockets ball and loses most of it's speed, but still has a bunch of spin, which turns into draw off the rail, and it stops. Good lesson in general for forward shots that go bluntly into a rail and then need to travel a long distance. The more forward you have, will slow it, right after it comes off the rail.

I will be more careful to add spin diagrams in future videos when it isn’t totally obvious. Concerning speed graphics, I honestly don’t think they are useful since speed is such a feel thing. Hearing the shot and seeing how the balls react in the video are much better indicators of speed, IMO.

If you are referring to the 1/2-ball-hit reference, shooting from the rail, that is the point of the reference ... to know that the CB will head to the side. Watch the rest of the video again to show how you can use speed and the amount of cut to change the CB direction relative to this reference.

Dr. Dave, thanks for another video, I learned a lot! I do have a question though, I think I get it but maybe you can explain a bit more. You show here a reference line: on the half ball hit down the rail the cue ball goes to the side. But if we use a 30-degree rule for a half ball hit and then mirror that imaginary line around the rail, the cue ball would go longer than the side. I think this is because the cue ball is so close to the rail after the hit, it didn't have time to develop a roll and go to the 30-degree line, so the rebound angle is different. Can you comment on this, please? Regarding this, I really have a hard time predicting where the cue ball is going to go on shots where the object ball is close to the rail. 90-degree still applies, but it seems that 30-degree for follow shots and 3x angle for draw don't really work (what I mean is imagine that rail is not there and then just mirror image the hypothetical cue ball path around the rail). Do you have any method or advice for predicting cue ball path on these shots?

Hi Dave! Great video as always! I noticed that you use a Balance Rite cue extension. Have you noticed any difference in the deflection properties of your cue when using the extension? I am also using that extension (I'm 6ft7in so I really fancy it!) and I have got the feeling that my cue has a bit added deflection because of it! Keep up the good work! Cheers!
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 4 жыл бұрын
I use the extension only to add length to my cue; although, it also adds weight (which I have learned to like). An extension or added weight should have no direct effect on CB deflection. Only the last 4-6" of the shaft has any direct effect on CB deflection, per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/squirt/cause/ However, net CB defection (the combined effects of squirt and swerve) does depend on shot speed; and if the heavier weight causes you to hit every shot a little faster, swerve will be delayed resulting in more net CB deflection, per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/squirt/speed-effects/

Hi Dr. Dave please kindly advise. I have just missed the black on an 8 ball game which results in loosing the tounament. It hung right between two jaws (with equal distance) on the corner pocket. Normally, I would roll the cue ball into one of the jaws before it automatically hit the black. However, from my judgement the pocket was big and both jaws were pointy, making the black somehow missable if I do so. I then aimed (a little) more towards the black than the left jaw that I planned to bump into. I also and a right spin on the cue ball to prevent any scratching in case I didn't hit the jaw at all. However, I still SCRATCHED. 1. Would the pocket size or pointy jaws be the case? 2. Is it possible to scratch even if I (certainly) add some spins? Thank you sir!

I have a question Dr Dave: when hit a shot with side, does the speed effect the rail where the side spin will work?
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 4 жыл бұрын
Speed has a big effect on sidespin shots. First you need to change your aim to compensate for CB deflection: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/sidespin/aim/compensation/ Also, with a long, slow shot, sidespin wears off on the way to the OB.

@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I can’t; although all of the shots are rolling-ball shots (except for the 10-ball shot which has a little draw due to a low tip position). I hit the CB above center on all of these shots but it doesn’t really matter how high or low the tip is since the CB picks up roll on its own at those speeds. That’s one reason why I didn’t show the tip diagrams.
@stevemarion9591
@stevemarion9591 2 жыл бұрын
Dr Dave what size is your cue? Would your Predator cue be just as effective if you only had just the shaft? I tried out a predator I think the tip was 11.9 or something like that the shaft seemed so skinny! My cue has a 13 mm and it’s old. So I might be buying a low deflection shaft. Cue Tec makes a 12.8 I would hate to buy something that I could not handle. I kind of like the sound of the cue Tec better that the predator. What’s your take should I buy the 11.9 shaft or what? Make up my mind for me.thanks Doc
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 2 жыл бұрын
The Predator Revo comes in three sizes (11.8, 12.4, 12.9). They all have very similar CB deflection, which is less than the CueTec. Only the shaft affects CB deflection, so you can put a Revo on any butt to create a low-CB-deflection cue. I don't personally care about the sound of the hit, but a softer tip will give a softer sound.

Here is the Table Difficulty Factor (TDF) data for my Olhausen (previously owned by Robert Byrne): table-9':1.00, pocket-5": 0.91, mouth-throat difference-1":1.07, shelf-1 1/5":0.98 - TDF: 0.95 For more info, see: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/table/TDF/ The pockets are big but they play a lot tighter than they look for certain shots. Olhausen has that reputation.

I have zan soft , sniper , precision ss ,s and med, navigator automatic ss and navigator impact ss ... Any ideas on those so I can put it on my shaft next ...

@@stefanciubotaru4611 Triangle is all I have used for many years, and I see no reason to change. I prefer a harder tip for the reasons here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue-tip/hardness/ I honestly don't care about the sound, "feel," or "feedback" from the tip/shaft per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/feel/

@@DrDaveBilliards thank you so much ... I always ask out of curiosity what tips people pay with because I found that the stuff that is promoted the most is not that good ... Like Kamui or predator tips ... A company like ki-tech on the other hand that makes techno-duds or the break tip hammerhead are absolutely amazing !!! I love your content ... Keep it up ...

How do you play against a player who purposefully blocks the pockets with hangers? It is not uncommon for my opponent to have 3 or 4 hangers in a single game. Any advice other than stop playing him?
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards 4 жыл бұрын
Learn how to send balls through his hangers (as demonstrated in the video); and when it creates a problem for him, replace his hangers with yours. Even better, improve your game so you can run out more and keep him in his seat. :)

2:25, in rules my friends play, potting their ball before yours means you lose your turn, so you wouldnt be on the black at all. and in my rules, any ball pocketed which isnt yours, is a foul. unless that was a freeball?
@DrDaveBilliards

This is not a foul under the WPA official rules of pool.

Thank you, and you’re welcome. I’m not sure what you mean by the last sentence. Did I block the view of something during the video? If so, could you let me know the point in time (MM:SS)? I didn’t notice anything with a quick scan.

What is the most important shot in pool? The NEXT one. There is no point in making a ball, if you cant make the next shot. Getting position consistently on the next ball is just as important as making the ball. As you get better, you will learn to play position on the next ball that will get you position of the ball after that. And so on, and so forth.

@@DrDaveBilliards I just recently found your channel, so I dont know if you have done a video on this yet. A great topic to cover would be examining the table when you get up to shoot. Look for the problem balls, look for the balls to break out the problem balls, what is the first shot to take, etc.

Pocketing the opponent ball is a foul right? Then why the shot where you pocket the opponent ball first and your OB after is not a foul? You also pocket the opponent ball together with your OB. So why it’s not a foul? In our country we can’t pot the opponent ball with any kind of situation, and when that happens it is a foul and it will not be your easy win but the opponent’s easy win.
