I am from British Columbia in Canada and we had a polygamous Mormon order here for quite a few years. Polygamy is illegal in Canada, and an authorities were able to convict their leader in the town of Bountiful and give him a life sentence for trafficking underage girls. Not that I agree, but when she said "come back when you're married" it seemed like that unless there was a wedding arranged and about to happen then they wouldn't do it. Just knowing that it would be your fate wasn't enough at that time, since nothing had actually been formally arranged at that time. It varies state by state. In four states, there literally isn't a minimum wage, with parental approval they can be married at any age. There are 2 states where 15 year olds can be married by their parents' legal consent instead of their own, and 22 states where it's 16. This is used frequently to trap kids in cults, abusive families, and frequently as almost a kind of conversion therapy - don't like that your daughter likes women? Forcibly marry them to a man, problem solved!

If leagal means aren't enough to protect children, laws need to be changed. In Germany children who go to CPS get to stay in custody as long as they want (hardly ever happens) buy conditions aren't as bad as in the USA either way. Ps. Having 4th grade feature a number of in person contact offers and optionally anonymous help lines for kids who are expiriencing any issues their parents don't protect them from is useful too.

Thank you so much for sharing! I can relate to your story in so many ways! I escaped at 16 from a family cult inside of the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church. I was told at 16 I am going to Bible college to marry a pastor or missionary and had no other choice. That was the day I decided I had to leave. A relative of mine got custody of me and I was able to do 2.5 years of regular high school then got my bachelor's degree. I am now doing well in my career and built a pretty awesome life for myself! I was raised as a Southern Baptist. So my stepmother was the type who said I know you walked an isle but how do you know your going to heaven?. In her mind you had to attend church every time that the door was open. Sunday morning, night, Wednesday if they had revivals. Church gatherings. And lord help you if she felt you did not carry a Bible. I got married and went to live with my dad. But started attending a different church and grew up an I learned that her ideology doesn't work. She quit her job and squander her money then moved back retired again. Now she is living with her sibling. She tried living with friends and they got tired of her. Mainly the male friend was not going to leave his wife and do what my mom wanted him to do. Now that I moved away now she has apologized for how she did me growing up and as an adult. Baby steps. But I am glad watching other go through what I went through is therapeutic

It’s so upsetting that the adults in this situation did not understand what she was going thru and what she meant by “they’re forcing me to get married” She was a child. It’s appalling that no one considered that abuse. She had brought “shame” to her family and the order by bringing the “outside world”’into the situation. She was absolutely in danger after that. What can we do to get the feds and the Utah state government to intervene ? Other countries have children's rughts, and the US does not. Children have a fundamental right to education, for example. I think part of the problem is the State of Utah and the people in government and other positions of power are Mormons. And in the USA individual States have a lot of rights. I think the Federal Government needs to investigate and prosecute the child labor and tax stuff, as a place to start. A lot of what was said in this video sounded illegal to me. The other problem is in the USA "religious " organizations have a lot of autonomy to do what they want under the guise of "Religious freedom ".

@@nickywal Gotcha, if you watched the interview with the children of God survivor, Daniela said that they specifically had compounds in countries like Brazil and the Phillippines because there are more high walls for security so it appeared "normal". In the US, homeschooling is far more normalized than in Europe (where it is often illegal). The EU has the "rights of the child".

I decided to check out the school website for them and wow.. it's wild how much they don't even try to hide. One teacher's profile states she's been teaching for 10 years and she's currently 24. Other profile pictures...I'd be really shocked if they were adults. That was a part of this cult I had never even thought of before. It's been really interesting to hear about that aspect. Out of all of the modern cults I am aware of that I am educated on, this one is the one that never fails to shock me. I remember watching Escaping Polygamy and being absolutely horrified by this above all others. You are all so amazing for getting out and speaking up.

My family was JW when I was younger. I thought what we went through was bad but after discovering this channel my eyes have been opened to how big of a problem cults are. My heart breaks for these people because nobody in these situations is leading a happy and healthy life even if they think they are. I’m really surprised that Utah didn’t have some laws on the books to help kids being married off. I know in my state one can get married if between 15-18 with the parent’s permission because usually it’s the kids wanting to get married not the parents wanting to marry them off! I would have thought knowing your state still has these groups practicing polygamy having ways to help the kids more should have been a priority. So many people just dropping the ball. Education is the key to freedom.

Your channel has helped me so much with my religious trauma. I'm queer and was adopted by a strict Roman Catholic family. I'm 22 and am happily out and 8 months sober off meth and fentanyl, I started using drugs when I was 12 after I was molested by my youth group leader, I lived so long believing I was sinful and I hated myself for so long. Thankfully my parents left the church when i was 18 after a suicide attempt I told them I was groomed and molested and I hid it because I thought it was sinful. My mom cried and told me she wish she could've protected me better. This channel has made me feel less alone thank you.

This was a very hard one to watch. Just finished till the end, and I have to say, at the moment I feel physically sick, not only out of disgust but out of second hand fear. Personally, I never ended up even near of how bad of a situation as she has been, but it is my worst fear, out of all things, the mind cage thing is the most horrible of nightmares. I just cried a little bit trying to even grasp what I was doing the same year her life changed forever. Every "yeah" out if her broke my heart. I never seen a stronger person

I see much of my 16 year old self in you. While a very different story, i also fought for my freedom at 16. I was in one of those non-detention centers for 2 weeks, then went to a few different group homes, foster homes etc, in between my "parent" showing up and love bombing me, or forcing me to go home only for me to leave again. i had a guardian ad litum & was emancipated at 17 after many many court dates. When i was going thru that, it didnt feel big or brave, it felt like the one and only course of action. But hearing you tell it sounds impressive and ballsy. ❤❤❤

One thing that I've been wondering about order since watching these is how does it work with all the men getting multiple wives. How are there enough women for all the men? Is it rare for men to get married, or do they try to recruit outside women? Or do they get around it another way? There are a lot of men who get no wives, or just one. They’re also way more accepting of families who want to join if they have a number of young daughters. Men get kicked out for little to no reason to make room for the higher ups taking all the girls. Also, when a man dies or gets kicked out, his wives and daughters get reassigned to a man who’s usually one of the higher ups

Unless the men are part of the inner circle or close to the leadership, they often don't get married. But as long as they keep dangling that carrot, many will work themselves to death for the order. Meanwhile multiple of Paul's sons were living polygamy when they were still teens. Also they tend to kick the younger more attractive men out, too much competition

It's also why they marry off girls at 13-16, to provide more wives for the men in their 30s-40s who may only have 1-2 wives. So if you aren't a leader's favorite son, you probably didn't get your first wife until your late 20s-early 30s, and your wife is probably like 10 years younger or more. In addition to non-leader men getting fewer wives or no wives at all

As you were telling your story, parts of it were sounding familiar but I couldn't remember if it was shown or alluded to. I finally remembered it was discussed but not gone into deeply because you were a minor. SO glad to hear your whole story and that you landed on your feet. I'm glad you have some of your siblings already out so you can maintain those relationships. Good luck on your schooling and I hope you love being a nurse. I work in a hospital (not as a nurse, but I have regular contact with them) we need compassionate people in hospitals. So many nurses are so BURNT out it's hard to see why they every wanted to be a nurse because they are just suffering from compassion fatigue and there are always more patients than there are nurses! Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your life and I'm glad you found the courage to fight before it was too late and it was 10 times harder for you to leave. When you were previously forced to accept marriage at a young age often to a stranger, how do you heal and later accept love and marriage by choice? Forgiving and forgetting the past has always been a struggle for me. I may have lived a different childhood but the damage that was done can still linger and taint my choices today. Of course those who have not healed enough may end up creating relationships with other abusers, but for the most part, the survivors I’ve seen on here have found healing in their ability to choose their person and remain with them all in their own volition.

I found this channel last year and I've watched almost every video and every video reminds me how powerful women are (men that escape are too but) the abuse that we can suffer and Persevere by shear power of will is astonishing. Bravo to all the people that escape to a better life. At this point, since so much has come to light in recent years about cults there should be a legal task force of pro Bono lawyers and specialty training for police offers etc specifically for helping people out of the situations. Shelise, you are amazing in your own story but the fact that you've given this platform to so many to come together from all different backgrounds to tell their story's in such a safe and understanding place is applaudable. The psychology of it all is as interesting as it is appalling. I never lived that life but I did experience religion pushing my mother to condemn me at a young age and then abusive relationships once I once older. Seeing how every person perceives things and takes their freedom back. How some are angry, some forgave some make jokes, it's just so impowering to share our stories and take back our power. unfortunately the system is flooded. most social workers are incredibly overworked. some are just not great, but most are trying their best within the confines of the law. we really need stronger laws to protect kids BEFORE really drastic things happen but its not set up that way right now

Social workers here generally don't have lucrative salaries, slightly more than teachers. But agencies are ran and maintained by the states, and operate within each individual county of said states. The majority of agencies do not receive adequate funding to employ enough people to cover the amount of cases they have to deal with (red states are in especially rough shape since they tend to have higher instances of child abuse and neglect). Social worker burnout frequently occurs and many quit their jobs after only a few years because of the work load. The individuals aren't the problem, the entire system is mismanaged and broken.

Incredible, that she’s gotten herself into a nursing program. What a triumph, to live a life of medical service. It’s really inspiring, to see someone get that far in life, from the family she came from. I can’t imagine, how she lifted the fog, from that intense of brainwashing & isolation. As she’ll see, huge populations come from pretty intense trauma, even though they weren’t in cults. Her story, is going to give a lot of her patients strength & hope, that they might bounce back from their own traumas. It’s so valuable, sharing that hope for healing. I’ll just add from my own journey: nutrition & lifestyle are tremendously suppressed, in favor of artificial interventions. She’ll have to wade through that swamp every day. Get people off sugar, as you can. Get them out walking, the most accessible & sustainable daily exercise (daily miles), for most people. Good luck, girl.

The law is dumb when it comes to dealing with abuse. Anyone who says forced marriage or child marriage are not abuse is either adhering to legal definition using the law to not help or is making statements that condone a type of child abuse. There is a problem of child marriage and it happens in Indian families, Pakistanian ext the abuse in these situations are horrendous! Forced marriage especially child marriage is sexual abuse. It's indirect/instrumental. But many of them are sexually abused by in-laws and fathers cousins ext but then their honor is ruined because they are unclean. Many women are killed set on fire strangled by their own parents. The situation is swept under the rug and ruled accidents ext

Goodness. It would be helpful if this channel would interview a knowledgeable lawyer to discuss family law rules, some of the constitutional issues, etc. If this story is correct, the judge made several legal errors (unless Utah state law permits coerced marriage).

How were you treated by the staff at the facilities you went to? How did you view the children and adults in the outside? We’re you surprised at what people took for granted? I absolutely Love this channel, I am fascinated by cults, I don't understand how so many follow these people and think its completely normal for men to have a bunch of wives and kids...Obviously the children born into it don't have a choice and this is All they know, to hear stories where these kids realize it is not ok and they escape, knowing they will not be able to see family and friends again, so Amazing...I love Shanell, Amanda, Jessica and Andrea, their show definitely opened people's eyes and they saved so many people!!
