Forced off the beach when winter hits Texas

We were planning to leave the beach before the storm arrived, but Mother Nature beat us to it. We were driven off the beach (again) in the middle of a winter storm when we discovered our furnace wouldn't work. It all left us questioning whether South Padre Island is a good snowbird destination.

Have you tried putting a bend in the aluminium strip on the sail switch toward the blower. This will cause more friction from the wind to ensure the switch is closed.

I have tried that before... with limited success. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it sort of works but then goes tickity-tick-tick-tick constantly. 😁 The long-term solution unfortunately does seem to be buying a brand new one. They usually last a season, depending on how dusty/dirty/sandy the terrain is.

When we were in Marfa, we had to bring our water hose in two nights. Our last morning, I couldn’t open our dump valves! They were frozen! All well later when thawed. Brrrrrr. You know that hairy thing on your wireless mic is called a “dead cat” …poor Misty and Benny.

Your water wouldn't have frozen if you had let your taps drip. It's been a weird winter all over. We were in Florida over New Years and it was very cold.

Those forced air furnaces in RV's suck, get yourself an Olympian Wave Catalytic heater. Hope the weather gets better for you.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, the propane furnaces aren't exactly bomb proof or very user friendly.

You can always instal a diesel heater too. They aren't a big draw on batteries and they are very efficient. They don't add moisture or CO2 into the camper either. @@HomeARoam

I paid a tech a lot of money to find a wasp nest causing the fan not to spin.l He cleared the nest and the heater fired right up. And there's a saying: Don't like the Texas weather? Stick around a few minutes.

Oh wow, that must have been a surprise for the furnace technician. Hopefully no more wasps around to sting them. That saying is so true, it warmed up again in a couple of days!

Hi there, this video was filmed at the end of January. Regular daytime temperatures were around 15°C, but when the cold snap hit, we had a daytime high of -1°C.
