Two British pilots have taken to the skies on a first-ever attempt to fly a Spitfire around the world. Its incredible journey is designed around fuel stops and takes in countries including Greenland, Canada and the US, before continuing on to the Far East and the Gulf region. It will eventually return to Europe for the last leg of the challenge. A glitzy event was held for the departure attended by celebrities including Gone Girl actor Rosamund Pike, Rocketman star Taron Egerton and Formula One driver David Coulthard.

WOW!! I grew up reading of the spits in Commando war comics.... then studied the design and the history in detail as I grew up. Now a RTW byt a Spit....will be a wonderful thing.

This is going to be something so amazing to keep up-to-date with. I guess considering it’s not really representing the military right now it is okay for it to not have military insignias, but it would still have been nice if it had its camo paint on it. Without that, it does look from a distance more or less like a lot of other aircraft until you hear the wonderful world of its engine and the shape of it up close. Good luck to all involved in this wonderful attempt.

Just landed at Reykjavik.. sorry false alarm.. the support aircraft OYTHP landed at Reykjavik yesterday but is now back at Lossiemouth. G-INTY took off but turned back due to poor weather

I am assuming their plane got upgraded since WW2 but still I got to ask the question is how is a short range fighter able to cross the ocean without refuelling? Swear I heard before that they would have to leave bombers on their own during WW2 because they did not have the range to go with them all the way to Germany (though this could have been the US planes not RAF that couldn't) let alone travel around world. Well I guess they could go from the UK to Greenland then to North America but still seems like a big challenge to go around the world in a short range WW2 fighter.
