The behavior you saw of the mare putting herself between the donkeys and Ransom is a natural behavior in horses. In the book Language Signs and Calming Signals of Horses the author calls it "splitting" and it happens when a horse thinks there will be a disagreement between two other horses (or sometimes between a horse and another animal/human or between a horse and a scary thing) so he moves in between the two to split them up and prevent a fight from happening and protect the more valued horse. Usually geldings/stallions will split a prized mare and any horse that tries to interact with her, but most any horse will split up an interaction if they are worried that their friend/mare/preferred horse might get hurt or upset in the interaction
@LRyan-li9wr3 жыл бұрын
I like to learn, and just wondering, do you think the mare considered the donkey as her "baby" so-to-speak, her "foal"?? I understand that mares will kick other mares if they try to get close to their own foal, and mares will chase other foals away too...go back to your mother ....

I don't know horses as well as you do, but I do know many forms of pain. Whether it's nerve pain which is more of a sensation or bone pain, barometric pressure fluctuations always make pain 10 times worse. Like I said, it doesn't matter what kind of pain or what level of pain someone is in any shift in barometric pressure causes inflammation and inflammation makes pain Spike. I've had several pain management doctors tell me that inflammation is a source of a large portion of any pain.
@lindalumae3 жыл бұрын
I have nerve pain, arthritis pain, and general inflammation from Lyme. Arthritis is also basically inflammation. But all my pain is worse when it’s wet outside. Nerve pain soars when it’s cold and wet. I have to balance activity. Too little and I’m stiff, too much and I have more pain. So I’m sure managing that in a horse is very difficult. But at least they already know what it is.
@drosefrison3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the exact same thing. I get pains when it rains 🌧!!! If it was a knee that had the arthritis could you wrap it to help relieve it? I can't recall as it's been so long since I had a horse but would think that could possibly help relieve some pain?

I love how donkey's are pretty unconcerned about horse drama. I wonder if Ransom's limp might also be a sign of weakness that Belle and Buddy have caught onto... they may think he'll attract predators? Maybe but at the same time if that was so they wouldent have let him get close in he first place and weakness or not of they can still react and do what they need a weakness is the least of there concern it's more likely that he's just another gelding or stallion and they are concerned over who's high horse the stomping could also be other stuff like a masquito bite or possibly him stepping on ants perhaps even a rock stuck in his foot is a chance for that too

This is fascinating. With Ransom's arrival, Buddy has been a constant at Belle's side, constantly guarding the distance between the newcomer and Buddy's companion since the loss of Mr T. Herd hierarchy is EVERYTHING, with each and every member of the herd, no matter the number of horses, having one concern only...that they are allowed to remain in the herd because there is safety in numbers. A predator will very quickly pick up on any weakness a herd member may show and that is exactly why Belle was seriously ferocious in her charge at Ransom to drive him away when Buddy wasn't around. She had been fiercely protected and shielded by Buddy, from the minute of Ransom's introduction, thereby affording her a strong position in the herd. She will have clocked Ransom's lameness from the get go and the very last thing she dare tolerate would be Ransom being allowed the safety of the herd's inner sanctum, which would possibly push HER out, into the loneliness of the outer reaches of the herd and therefore at greater risk of being attack from a predator. So when Buddy was busy at the feed trough and Ransom chose to try and muscle closer in, she was having absolutely none of it and charged at him, forcing him out again. This action immediately cemented her place at the side of the highest horse, Buddy, on his return, which automatically strengthened her life expectancy. Nothing personal, Ransom, it is what it is. Great stuff, Rick. Thank you.

My theory is Buddy will start pushing Ransom. You're high horse to Buddy and once you leave, Buddy will take over as high horse because both seem to acknowledge Ransom is lower. As you've said in many videos, horses are always paying attention, as Belle's the only mare, she's going to find security in the stronger horse- Buddy. So my theory why Buddy seems more tolerant under the shelter? He's out of eyeshot of the other equines, so he doesn't have to put on the "tough guy" act for them- which might be a good chance to them to bond...

Poor Ransom now he has both of them giving him a hard time I hope that they start to except him soon. They will be a great little herd if and when they decide to let handsome Ransom in. Great update Rick we had the latest news and a pretty good storm. 🐴🐴🐴🐴🐈⬛🐇( extra horse pic because Mr T is still with the team in spirit : )

I knew they'd do better without that pushy dame in the way! 😂 You could really see their size difference there! I never realized how big Buddy is! That went pretty well.

Eating together, wow! Great news! Wonder if Ransom ever had salt before? Making up for lost salt! Buddy was so good, love it! Thanks for sharing all your videos each step of the way! Very enjoyable! Better than tv!

So she is the led mare. Or the brains of the herd. It is her responsibility to keep the herd safe and contained.
