This is a very reliable alternative if you can't get your old gauge cluster repaired. Enjoyed the video, top work👍.

Well its not too much about whether or not to make the repairs....I just don't want to. Lucas parts are not the easiest thing to come up with and are quite expensive when compared to the availability and reasonable costs of the components I use. All of which are available at virtually any auto parts supply house across the nation. Much easier to trouble shoot like this too. And don't forget....a lazy man always wants to do things the easy way.... LOL Now, if I were a restorer and not a user, I would jump through hoops to repair virtually anything on the tractor to keep it original. Thanks for stopping in today. I appreciate your thoughts.

@@tractorman4461you're right those Lucas's parts aren't that cheap, and it's not as good. Really want to install an alternator on my 3000, but also wanted to keep the tachometer. Pity it's driven off the generator.

@@oilyragsgarage7200 There's a company out there that makes an accessory for the back of the Delco alternator that hooks up to the end of the shaft and allows the Ford tach drive to hook right up to it. You'll have to google it...maybe something like ' alternator conversion kit for Ford tachometer'. I really don't care about a tach. None of my old antiques have one and that's what I'm used to. LOL

That dang pivot point must have either been metric or worn severely, but it wasn't 3/8 or 7/16. With 3/8 through it, it would track way off square when the belt was tightened. 7/16 wouldn't even start to go in. Go figure huh. Thanks Andy for the nice words.

We had a box of shim stock back on the farm. Various thicknesses of sheet brass all for this very reason. I still have some small pieces, but the paint can saves the brass for more important uses. I usually don't fuse the ignition, but as accessories like lighting or other loads are added, they will usually go through in line fuses. Thanks David for watching and commenting.

Good Morning TM44 Friend! What a Lovely job on the new dash! You could put the old one on your cycle just to throw people off. You could mount it on the old Ford sideways and use it for a cuppaJO holder, even on your chain saw! Imagine, cutting wood and havin a JObreak anytime? I have many many ideas but some may be nothing more than ideas. As I’ve always said, I have a huge brain but my skull is 3” thick. But good news fer ser! The Rough and Tumble is going to happen in a week or so. I am pumped and ready to go! I have seen some old steamers in action on a few Amish farms but this was just a teaser. So I was thinking, if you hooked up your favorite 44 to a wagon, set up a few cots and may be a cooler, started out about now, you might make it to Kinsey’s by t he time it starts. The Missus would have a great view on the way and you could set up a tarp in case it rained. Just tell the cops your just headin to the lower 40. You could also set a few tractors on the wagon to work on for a demo brought to you by the 44 Ranch, sell some wheelies from your BBQ grill and pay for gas. Just one of my many ideas! But I’ll be sure to send you some phodoz indeed! So this is DaveyJO rocketing off to another exciting cuppaJO I’m tipping your way! Be sure you and the Missus get your vitamin J for the day and please do give her a squeeze or pat for me and whisper sweet do nothins in her ear! Now me outta here!

Very cool video! I got a lot out of that. Never thought about using thin tin from a can to make a bushing. I'm always drilling things out and using a piece of pipe. I like the can trick. Love the old Mill! Always wish I had something like that around the shop. I'm usually using a small grind wheel on a drill or a round file for making slots. It works but, it takes time and sometimes you don't have much time. Thanks for the lesson on figuring pulley speed. 👍👍👍

If your tractor is a heavy daily use tractor, I'd suggest drilling and tapping the head at the location of the existing temp sensor instead of doing what I did on the block drain. This works fine for my light use machine, but I don't think its quite as accurate as it should be for steady heavy use. You'll get a much better reading at the original location.

It is a little tough to cover all the bases, so I add what I can in the description box. Of course virtually every video I do starts out as a 45 minute to hour and a half video, so tons of editing causes a lot of detail lost. But you just can't leave the videos that long...no one would watch them....so the shorter the better keeps the attention. There are some vids that just HAVE to have 20 minutes or more...but the video analytics tell the story quite well. I can usually tell which ones will keep viewers engaged or not. Buttttt...it is what it is huh !! Thanks for watching.

I am fairly sure that that alternator mounting hole is metric. Seems like, just as we are abdicating our porous southern border to all of those Mexicans and such like, we are also giving away our tried and true standard measuring systems to the European metric system. I am a voice in the wilderness, I know. Also, I wasn't able to see it in the video, but did you bush the open all thread between the alternator pivot and the rear end of the mounting bracket? I That is a critical wear area and without that bushing the alternator will squirm on the all thread and elongate the mounting hole.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 жыл бұрын
I was pretty sure it was metric as well...and I came close to drilling it to 7/16, but I didn't have that size all thread on the shelf. Yes, I did in fact bush the full length of the mounting bracket for the exact reason you described. Its unfortunate, but I do have to edit a ton of stuff out of the videos to keep them to a moderate length and that's just one of them portions that was cut out. I should have said when I was making the bushing that that was why it was so long. It was the exact length of the bracket. I share your chagrin about the slow change to metrics....Thanks Bill for the cool comment. There's more to come...

@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I usually gut them all and start from scratch. On these blasted Fords, they have the electric gauges and sensors and they are kinda pricey. So I change them all to standard gauges and a standard internally regulated alternator and walk away from 'em. On Fords, I've done this 2000, and 4500 Backhoe and another regular 4000 just to simplify them. And I've done the same on Massey Harris's, Olivers, Allis Chalmers and quite a few others as well. What kind of problem specifically are you having....??

@@tractorman4461 its odd...sometimes I get spark and sometimes I dont...there have been a few wiring jobs on it before I got it...Idk if I should just get the alt with the volt reg built in or what.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 Жыл бұрын
@@woodboogerfarm Well, I'd address the charging circuit later. It really hasn't got much to do with the ignition circuit. To determine if the problem is between the battery, key switch and distributor, determine if its positive or negative ground. Then take a wire from the appropriate battery terminal directly to the side of the coil that comes from the key switch temporariy. That will ensure there is continual power to the coil to see if it will start and stay running. If it does start and stay running, the problem is in that portion of the circuit that is bypassed by the jumper. If it does not stay running, the problem will be between the coil connection and the internals of the distributor. Many times the circuit will ground itself out inside the distributor due to a frayed wire or missing insulator. I've had a couple short out right where the wire and grommet passes into the distributor housing. But there are also many other things that cause intermittent running, but this is where I start with each one.

I was thinking about that vintage of Ford Tractor, model 2000. Does the '2000' mean it has a 2 or 2.2 litre gas engine I wonder? Also, you mentioned that it had Lucas electrics, so would engine have come from one of the Ford plants in Great Britain ; Ford of England sure did have a lot of plants there as in Kent, Dagenham, Dorset etc. That's a nice conversion your doing there Tractorman, makes for an interesting video too.

Both very good questions Reg. I still don't know the size of the 3 cylinder engine. LOL. IIRC, most all the '000' series Fords were fitted with Lucas electrics as original equipment. I had (2) 4000's and another 3000 and their systems were identical to the 2000 here. Not a single one works. I can't remember what the 4500 had, but I converted it to this exact set up years ago. I changed this one to Petronix electronic ignition too....video in the wings. LOL Thanks Reg for the visit. Also I have no clue as to the origin of the actual power plants.

@@tractorman4461 I asked this Wendell, because I have had a lot of equipment that used the Ford Dorset diesel engines, namely a fleet of some 35 Ingersoll-Rand 150 CFM portable air compressors. I have a Ford 2000 diesel, can you explain the wiring? I have no problem getting a gm alternator to bolt on, but I don't know where each wire needs to go. Take a look at this diagram I made for this tractor in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/homsmWpul6mlZrc Its got all the connections and where they go, eliminating the ammeter and using a voltmeter instead. The only thing I missed was the neutral switch which I added during the wiring up video. But you should be able to see the three wire connections and I think I remember explaining it wire by wire in the video. Take a quick look at the playlist on the 2000: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJbQq6Skp5uce80 I would suggest though to try to find a sensor to fit the opening in the front of the head for the temp gauge instead of doing what I did. This series shows how I made the new gauge cluster out of heavy gauge sheet metal. This tractor is not going to work very hard any more, but if it were going to be used heavily, I think the location I adapted into is probably not the best. When I do these changes, I gut the whole tractor and start over with all new wire and wire loom. I buy automotive wire in rolls at the auto parts stores.
