I just bought an 86 f-250 with a 6.9idi four speed four wheel drive and I love it compared to my 2007 2500hd Duramax it is slow but if it brakes down it won't take me but a couple hours to fix it I love my Duramax but I always wanted an old ford I love the truck it's just an simple old diesel great truck I wish they would start making them like this again

@ ~6:00 No, you don't have to crack the injectors. I found this out, just last month. There is a shraeder valve on the top/side of the fuel filter mount. Just like the valve stems on your tires. Crank the engine a bit, then depress that schraeder valve, to let the air out. Crank it a bit more, let more air out. Eventually, the truck will start and run rough for a bit, then smooth out. Don't just depress the center of that valve and leave it open while you crank. Crank a bit. Stop. Let the air out. Crank a bit. Stop. Let the air out. I know it works, because that is how I did it.
@arthurpenny2776 Жыл бұрын
You don’t even have to push the schraeder valve all you have to do is turn the key do that three or four times and your truck will fire you right up

You don't want horse power in a diesel engine you want maximum pulling Torqe. Diesel engines are made to pull heavy weight. Good information video. If you want speed, buy a Deisel truck with a manual transmission. A Diesel with a manual transmission is absolutely amazing much faster then a Diesel engine with an automatic transmission.

The powerstroke filter is a very good idea as it filters out MUCH finer particles than the IDI oil filter. Also, while it is made by Purolator, the filter media is a higher grade material spec'd out by Ford than what you would find in a porulator filter. The Racor & Donaldson fuel filters are also MUCH better than wix. Six used to be a great brand, but their quality has dropped lately.

Great video. I know it’s just an opinion, but I believe a person should use uncharged green antifreeze, with the Ford SCA, and use test strips, to check SCA levels, twice a year. 1990 7.3 IDI here, with the original radiator and no issues. Each to their own, just saying...
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage11 жыл бұрын
I use Fleetcharge, and it's purple, looks just like Purple Power. You might oughta get some SCA test strips and see if it has any additive left. If not, flush it completely and refill it with either Fleetcharge or regular coolant with SCA additive added in to it. Remember that the system holds about 29 quarts so you need about 15 quarts of straight coolant to get a 50/50 mix.

1990 7.3 5 speed. I ran it working a summer for a bee-keeper. Ran speed limit 65mph OK, with a full load of boxes, AC on max, & large skid loader on the trailer.(had to work it's guts out to do that) The OD was about to hit 300K miles, engine never opened. I next worked in furniture delivery. Brand new truck with the same engine, but ran & sounded the same, with = performance.

The "FL-1995 oil filter" - I didn't know that you could use the power stroke oil filter on the 7.3L IDI. I picked one up by mistake and still have it. Out of caution I didn't install it and used the vehicle year filter. Good to know!

I've watched this videos several times over the years. I say people need to remember what that thingy called a transmission is for. It ain't to help you learn to add these new guys like to stay in high gear if it don't they're offened. what happened to the good old days when you bragged how far down you had to gear. 12,000 lbs and more is an easy number with a natural IDI let alone a turbo version take that multiplier called a gear shift and Triple the power. if a IDI won't pull it, it doesn't need to be pulled with a pickup. The most I've seen pulled with a 6.9l IDI was 37,000 pounds gross. Yes he had to know his stuff, yes he had to start off in low range work up to 2nd low then shift the transfer case on the fly and hit 1st high and build from there, yes it took about 10 minutes longer to get there but he could run 45 mph and 25mph on the 7% grade. If you know your truck and your shifting a 6.9l had 8speed transmissions and the 7.3l had 10 speed transmissions the transfer case can be shifted without grinding with just a little practice. I miss the challenge of a big load on our 6.9l we had and will be buying an IDI soon our Cummins is great but just not as fun.

like what you said about people thinking they need gobs of power. There is no need for tons of power especially in a work truck, gearing and a little bit of torque can get the job done maybe not a break neck speed, but while working you should never hot rod, not worthing endangering peoples lives.

After I put a Banks Sidewinder on my 7.3, it has not been the same, underpowered, engine that it used to seem like. The Sidewinder really woke it up and I would be surprised if it did not have at lease the same power as 1st gen PSD. It's not a cheap turbo but I got a deal on mine, used. I rebuilt the turbo and installed it in the truck (PITA but manageable) and I'm not looking back!
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage9 жыл бұрын
eatont9999 Awesome. When I got the first truck (a '91) I felt like it had plenty of power. When I got this one, I thought it was somewhat underpowered although in reality they performed the same. They didn't change between then and now so I guess me or my expectations were what changed lol.

Only this service need diesel engine? I am new in diesel. I buy my truck two days ago. When need replace the glow plugs and injesctors?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage9 жыл бұрын
Haralabos Lukatos You replace them if they fail. Injectors rarely act up on these engines. They have small rubber seals on them that can leak, but if they are dry externally and the engine runs good without putting out a lot of black smoke even when at light throttle, don't worry about the injectors. The glow plugs can fail eventually and you'll know because it will get hard to start when cold. It should start pretty easy and run evenly if all the glowplugs are working. There is also a device called the glow plug relay which is located on the rear top of the engine behind the air cleaner. It looks just like an older ford starter solenoid. Rarely that can go bad and disable ALL the glowplugs. These things don't happen often, so don't stress over it.

Thank you very much for your answer. is very helpfull. I have my truck few days and i try to learn. I take the truck to the mechanic is replace oil transmission fuid differentialls. I tell in the mechanic i buy the truck used and to tell me what the truck need. Is tell me the air filter is okay. I open my self today the air filter box and i see is very dirty. Now i wonder if the fuel filter is dirty too. Today in the morning even is warmer now i tried 4 times for make the engine start. I cycle the glow plugs 4 times. late the evening today my truck no start i spray starting fluid in the air filter box. The hose is had missing. Is start that way. I see the air box have the air filter and one sponge inside the box. I have ford ranger gas engine no have that sponge. Diesel engines is need that sponge? I not know if previous owner have put that sponge in the air box. HOw i can know if the glow plugs is bad. The person i buy the truck tell me one battery is bad the one is for the glow plugs and that man plugged the truck overnight in power outlet.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage9 жыл бұрын
Haralabos Lukatos The sponge is a pre-filter for dusty conditions. You don't HAVE to use it but it will make your regular air filter element last longer. If you wish to retain the pre-filter, wash it out with soap and water, then let it dry. When dry, put a small amount of 30wt oil on it and knead the oil into the prefilter until it is evenly distributed., then install. Check it often though because it'll stop a lot of dirt. An easy way to check whether the glowplugs are working is to watch the overhead light while you turn the key to ON to operate the glowplugs. If everything is working the light should dim noticeably while glowplugs heat up.

thank you for the answer. I am new in diesel and i try to learn. My truck i buy used the air box had leafs inside i clean. ONe i see even if i put new wal-mart batteries is hard to start in warm weather. I turn the key on i hear the glow plugs clicking i wait stop i turn the engine is get long crank engine is no start i do cycle the glow plugs second time after some long cranks the engine is start. What can have wrong my truck. After the engine is start is run good no smoke. When i try start the engine i see smoke come from the fuel filter after the engine is start the smoke is stop

1993 7.3 is Idi engine? What is the difference with powerstroke 7.3? What upgrades i can do in my 1993 F250 7.3 diesel engine 4x4 manual transmission? Is turbo engine. Online i read only the turbo can upgrade in 1993 models is truth that?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage9 жыл бұрын
Haralabos Lukatos in 1993 there was the 7.3 IDI (indirect injection) and there was a 7.3 IDI Turbo. The Powerstroke is a turbocharged, DIRECT-injected 7.3L engine that is similar but not the same as the 7.3L. There are still some kits floating around to install a turbo in a regular 7.3L IDI engine but I wouldn't. You should just appreciate this engine for it's reliability and durability and be ok with the fact that you aren't going to outrun everything on the road with it. Don't over rev it.
