I've always wanted to find one of these, I used to work on one for a Rancher near here. We loved the thing, but newer and bigger units replaced it. People have heard of all the bad things about the Select O Speed trans, and yes it did have short commings at first. Most of these concerns were addressed in the recall and the later improved Commander series. One has to keep in mind several things, 1, the Ford Ag division at that time was all about small light , affordable tractors for the average small farmer. So going into the land of the Giants was a major change in direction, that they were slow to get into the right thinking. 2, The transmission was basically a light duty automotive automatic without the torque converter, that factor in itself was one of their major failures, that torque converter absorbed all the sudden jerks and shocks, those shocks are what showed the underdesigned weaknesses. Automatic trans in autos then all required regular service and maintenance no matter who built them. Farm tractors are at the extreme service end of the spectrum, ( they don't often get much care) If one gets his mind in the mode that we don't abuse it and do the correct maintenance, they were very good. It's only in fairly recent times that builders have finally gotten the Power shift type trans right, Including Ford! On the good side, being a fairly small tractor, labor cost aren't bad like on the monster tractors out there today. But with the age of them, parts are getting scarce. Ford was big in Europe, so the small tractors are very popular there. The video above is at a plowing match, they are judged on many things, speed isn't needed , precision is.

I'm looking for a complete gasket set for the 6000 Commando. Do you have any idea where I could find it?

If I remember correctly m&w sold upgraded Pistons for these along with a turbo kit ,maybe even heavier con rods.correct me if I'm wrong it's been many years since I've seen one working about ten years ago a guy brought one that was all restored up to the new Centerville fair in PA,I had a friend I went to school with who said he had one and liked it it was really good on the silo blower he also told me the transmission needed to be kept adjusted properly ,the cables that changed the gears needed to be just right and keep oil changes up in both trans, and engine. He and his dad were big Ford fans Charlie told me he bought a 7700 that was a big disappointment to him his 9000 had better power and way better fuel economy ,,,go figure!!

Why always plow so slow, and keep the RPM's just above an idle? We have one of those with a turbo. We'd plow a gear faster with throttle up, pulling 5-14's.

Gotta say that that front axle beam looks very puny !

it's my understanding that the 6000 almost put Ford out of the tractor business. Transmissions and wrist pin headaches.

They were originally Red. They painted them blue after the repairs to indicate it had been done.
