He was going through a gallon of oil in 10 min. With no smoke coming out the tailpipe. We found pinched O-rings on the injector. It was pumping all the oil into the diesel gas tank

Just to clear up any confusion, people coming from other diesels assume that the "Wait to start" light on the dash indicates that the glow plugs are on. Not on a 7.3. The glow plugs can stay on for up to two minutes after turning on the key. The light is just a suggestion. People will cycle the key to "heat up the glow plugs more", when really all they are doing is turning them off and on.

My hand still swells up some so it's a pain trying to get connectors apart but I'm happy to be back at it. I've been solely cars (a few per week) but Friday will be a 08 Dodge Ram with CEL, sluggish & poor gas mileage so this should be fun climbing around it. I can't stay away it's killing me. I may have the last of the 99s because the dealer said my order probably wouldn't go through when I contracted it new. It's hauled hundreds of tons over the years. The hard start and check engine light came on recently. After South Main's instructions led me to solve my cold start problem in two hours and for the $57 cost of an O'Reilly replacement relay, I watched his video again, and this time sat through all the commercials thrown up first, to give him some more KZbin revenue. Gotta check the merch, too. What would the dealer repair dept. have cost for this??!!

Doesn’t hurt to check the resistance of the glow plugs if you suspect they’re not strong, i think spec on those are under 2Ω resistance is good, also for folks that might be thinking that relay looks like the starter relay.. take note that the relay for the glow plugs is different than the starter relay, the ground is different on the glow plug relay on the control side, i think it’s isolated and switched through the ground side

Even when the WTS light goes out, the glow plugs will continue to heat for a minute or so. Watch your voltage gauge and wait until you see the needle bounce back up if (when) she gives you tude on cold starts (provided your glow plug circuit is at least somewhat functional…).

Nice and quick! Helpful of Ford to make the harness connectors so easy to get to. :D It's worth mentioning while you've got a Powerstroke in there, Ford recently rejected the API's new standard for diesel motor oil (CK-4), due to finding excessive wear in some older engines. For the time being, the previous standard (CJ-4) is acceptable for use, but as its availability dwindles, you'll have to be careful about what oil you put in these Powerstrokes. :)

Hey Eric nice scope-on-a-rope diag! Only question I had was can the glow plugs actually short out (low resistance) kind of like a GM injector and eventually cause relay failure by over-amperage? How much current do those things draw?
@spudth6 жыл бұрын
I think Eric indicated that he usually sees them go open when failed. Generally diesel guys will check for resistance with a ohm meter to confirm their condition. My 260K miles truck needs very good motorcraft brand glow plugs to start in cold weather.
@MCatwar3 жыл бұрын
if i can make one suggestion, i diagnose mine by reading the resistance and multiplying by 12 volts to figure out how mudh current is passed through each glow plug. from there, if you wanted, you could calculate power, but usually just looking for a decent current passing through is good enough. you can make continuity and pass the light test, but your resistance may still be too high and therefore passing little current and making it hardly turn on

What I like is the ground lead from the powerprobe. I connect my test light to the ground. Because the powerprobe is hooked to the battery and it helps add length to my test light. Best thing for a 7.3 glow plug relay is to replace it with a starter relay for construction equipment. Doesn’t fit very well but it will never have to be replaced again.
@RodgerMudd5 жыл бұрын
You are so right. The Ford relay is pure junk. I trashed the relays on all our trucks, both the turbo intake and glow plug relay. We also replaced all terminal ends with nickel plated copper of solder on type. The ford ones are pron to corrosion. Also we put real water fuel separators on that could be checked and drained without getting under the damn truck. Also synthetic is the only oil we use. The 2003 F-350 Super Duty has 400,000 miles on it and have never replaced the injectors. I find for a diesel engine the compression is on the low side thus requiring preheat at moderately low temperatures. One more thing> Modified the turbo inter cooler return so it does not pull air from around the battery. So as not to induce sulfur fumes and terminal corrosion and acid build up into the turbo and air intake system. Who ever designed that need a brain scan. I would never let this guy touch my trucks!

Not trying to be that guy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the glow plugs are good. The light will light up even if the glow plugs are bad because anything you touch that is grounded will cause the light to come on the scope. I have had this issue. It seems like every few months during the cold time of year I’m constantly changing the relay which leads me to believe I have one or more glow plugs bad.

Dave Seely That's what I was wondering . Could it test ok but only heat up a bit of the tip compared to a new glow plug heating up the whole tip. A resistance check , hum not sure if that's a viable option . Cheers !!
@trainer20188 жыл бұрын
STEVE ROB Eric was just checking to see if he had an open circuit on the glow plugs. Then he did another simple check with the relay and found bad contacts. The best way to check those glow plugs is to make sure the current that the plugs are drawing are in spec. An ohm check would not be the way to go here as for checking the performance of the plugs, but it can be used though to check for opens and shorts in the plug. Wonder if Eric had time to take the relay apart and see how it failed. I would have checked it the same way.
@SteveRobReviews8 жыл бұрын

Yeah those relays are cheap and they burn up, I know this because I cut mine open when I changed it out for a White Rogers relay, all charred and no shiny spots of the contacts. There is another relay underneath the stupid plastic cover for the intake heater that is identical to the glow plug relay, I would guess it doesn't burn up as often since it probably has less current go through it but I could be wrong. Still like my 7.3l
