Ford AOD Governor Servicing and Repair

I show the repair of the Ford AOD's governor, including disassembly, inspection, governor body reconditioning and reassembly. I conclude with an air test with the governor installed onto the output shaft.
This video is an 'off-shoot' of my 'Ford AOD Assembly PT2' but is not included in that video for pacing and run-time considerations. Plus I figured it could be helpful for anyone with an AOD transmission that's having governor-related issues and is looking for some guidance on servicing these governors.

I think you found the reason for no third gear. Back in the 80s, I did a C6 transmission, it was a carry out. The thing took forever to shift, and when it shifted to third, it revved up, then it would coast, when it slowed down enough it slammed into lo gear. There is a little washer in the governor that go in last before the snap ring, I put it in backwards. I flipped it over, and it worked like a dream, I almost got killed fixing up that mistake. When we were letting the truck down on the lift, it slipped forwards, and fell off the lift, pinning my legs up against the tire machine. I learned two lessons for that experience, don't do anymore carry outs, and never trust somebody that you thought was your friend. I spent the night in the hospital, and it was a hefty bill, the asshole that I did the job for never even gave me a penny towards paying my hospital bill, it was his faulty lift that almost killed me.

Damn, sorry to hear but glad you were able to escape without getting maimed or killed, Peter....Sucks the guy never tried to help you with your bills even though you probably could have sued him into oblivion, if you wanted to...I don't do service calls to customers' shops or locations, unless I screw something up. Thankfully, it's pretty rare though occasionally happens. Though at this point I'm having them bring me the transmission back if they can't or don't want to fix the mistake themselves.

@@nickstransmissions It wouldn't have done me any good to sue him, he didn't have anything any way. It was my mistake, so I made it right. I always cleaned up any screw ups, unlike the asshole I did the transmission for, it was never his fault. He earned himself a reputation, in the end, he lost all his customers. He would fist fight you for a lousy nickel.

Thank you for your video I just overhauled or refreshed my aod watch your video several times only thing I had an issue with was with the piston tools sold today the pistons would not fit the tool

Thank you for watching, Robert! Yes, those piston tools sold in the aftermarket are hit-and-miss, unfortunately. I now have all the OTC OEM tools which are much better...Even with the OEM tools, I still recommend folks heat up the reverse input machine cut seals in trans fluid to about 150 degrees or so just before installation, then coat the drum's sealing surfaces with that fluid along w/assy lube as it makes it easier to get them installed.
