Thank you so much for your videos. Having a college degree as a mechanic, not all the time do we always now how to fix every car. The point of view with your go-pro is absolutely perfect. Your description and explaining things is great. Not everything has to be by the book. My issues were all the grounds and where they all hooked up going back in the edge. Thank you again for taking the time and effort to help us guys/gals out.

You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful! You are spot on about not knowing how to fix everything. There's simply too much variation in vehicles these days to be taught everything. Even if it could be taught, no one can remember that much stuff 🤣 Mighty bold of you to assume I have actually invested in a go pro. That is actually my cell phone clipped into a ball cap with a spring loaded clamp (that isn't even designed to hold a phone) bolted to it. It's a rather interesting setup that MAY have had some alcohol involved during both the design and building stages... 🤣🤣 However, it works, and apparently quite well 🤣 I try to be as detailed as possible without being boring. I also try to do everything by the book, but sometimes the book is stupid. While I typically follow the line of thought that the engineers that designed something should know best and to follow their recommendations, but it's quite apparent that sometimes that might not be true.

This was very interesting to watch! I think if I ever tried it I would end up with a bunch of extra parts left over at the end.

When you was talking about the rear drive shaft bolts 38:20 that hold them together that whole thing really does still turn regardless of you haven't removed the CV axles because I tried that before on my 09 Edge SEL AWD it was turning on me while I was trying to remove the bolts and I also went for what you was talking about is going for a impact gun instead it wasn't working for me by wrench or socket ratchet otherwise I've watched videos as I go while handling this engine swap. When you was talking about removing the bolts to the flywheel 45:10 I had no choice but to leave them in and have the whole torque converter come with it when I removed the transmission with it because in my case the engine I'm replacing is locked up and doesn't turn over at all no budge in it
@hummerguy
@hummerguy 3 ай бұрын
Did you take the torque converter bolts out with the engine and trans out the car? My problem is the engine keeps turning when I try to break the bolts loose, Its hard trying to hold the crankshaft bolt while breaking the torque converter bolts under the car, i'm figuring it'll be easier with the engine and trans out
@berad187
@berad187 3 ай бұрын
@@hummerguy I couldn't take my torque converter bolts out because when I was replacing this engine it was literally locked up I couldn't turn it over so I had to pull the whole thing together and separate them apart and buy a replacement torque converter and there wasn't no way I couldn't get my wrenches between the engine block and the flywheel

Great job! How long would you estimate you spent on the removal and installation? I think I have to replace my torque converter.
@darkhorseautoanddiesel
@darkhorseautoanddiesel 9 ай бұрын
I work slow, so estimating how much time it took me would not give you a good idea, if it was even possible. The book says 8.8 or 9.4 hrs to remove and reinstall the trans, 2wd and awd respectively. Unless you've done it several times, that time is not accurate. If it's your first time, I'd say double that. If you work quickly you'll get it done faster, but I'd allow for that. The book also is assuming taking it out from the bottom, which means dropping the subframe. I doubt you'll be doing that in your garage. The book says it can't be removed from the top, but I've definitely proven that wrong.

In your video did you mention that you had link to another video showing how to remove just the transmission, did not see that there ?
@darkhorseautoanddiesel
@darkhorseautoanddiesel Жыл бұрын
I did? If I did I definitely misspoke. There's no good way to remove just the trans or the engine without removing them together as an assembly. I did start making a video on separating the 2 and doing swap once out of the vehicle but I stopped because it was simple enough that if one managed to pull them out together, they should be able to figure that part out easily. I also was getting pressed for time on this that job.

Is this the only way? Can the transmission be separately removed, maybe from the bottom of the car if it was hoisted?
@darkhorseautoanddiesel
@darkhorseautoanddiesel 7 ай бұрын
You can remove the engine/trans assembly from the bottom, which, according to the service manuals I have, is the only way (obviously, they're wrong). However, taking it from the bottom requires you to drop the subframe, which means unbolting half the suspension and steering components, which means you need to get an alignment when you're done. Not worth it from a DIY perspective. There isn't enough room to remove the transmission or engine by themselves. Even if you somehow managed to pull it off, I'm certain it'd be more work than just removing the assembly and separating them outside of the vehicle.

If you remove the cowel where wiper motor is at it opens up the motor a lot. Then you can see and get to some things easier. The green wire is easy to get to that way also.

What's the ticket on replacing a motor in one of these 4wd if you don't mind me asking

Well, the shop manual I have calls for 13.1 hours for removal and reinstallation of the engine, not including the transfer of any parts or accessories. 15.6 hours if transferring accessories. 19.6 if it is a bare long block. Shop rates are typically between $75-$100 per hour. Add in the cost of the engine and fluids. So, a lot lol.

Within 30 miles of driving off the lot of a dealership automotive shop from having my transmission replaced in a 2012 Ford Edge SEL FWD the power steering went out, drive belt busted, crank pulley came apart, and started over heating and leaking fluids. 135k miles. Any ideas what may have used this chain reaction of events? This is the mechanic notes the service rep sent me. They for now are trying to make me pay another 4k labor and parts so any advice would be appreciated. I think they screwed something up putting it all back together. 1.0 . NO COOLANT NO POWER STEERING, ALTERNATOR MESSAGE NO CHARGE. FOUND SHREDDED BELT AND CRANK PULLEY HAD CAME APART. ALSO FOUND VALVE COVER LEAKING FRONT COVER LEAKING. BRAKE VACUUM PUMP LEAKING. PERFORMED COOLING SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST AND FOUND REAR CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY AND HOSES LEAKING COOLANT. 10.2 REMOVE FRONT COVER AND RESEAL REPLACE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY AND OTHER FAILED PARTS. REPLACE BOTH HEATER HOSE ASSEMBLIES AND OUTLET CONNECTOR. RETEST!!!

It's hard to say, but it sounds like a combination of them screwing up some, then trying to fix every other little thing going on. Some of which may have been from their screw ups.
