Ford Escape - LIFTGATE / TAILGATE WON'T OPEN? (2008-2012)

Ford Escape has a power operated lift gate release switch ( button ) and power operated tail gate glass portion release switch ( button ). There are three main problems why you possibly can't lift the rear hatch ( 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | XL | XLT | LIMITED | HYBRID ).

First and most common problem is a burnt fuse. Since Escape has a power operated liftgate release switches, if the fuse is burnt you won't be able to lift the tailgate. Make sure to first check the 15A Liftgate Release fuse.
Second very common problem is a bad liftgate actuator. Is it a common failure on Ford Escape due to a poor design. Water gets in the liftgate and with time the door actuator stops working. Replacement is easy, bigger cost is the actuator itself.
Third possible reason is bad connection at tailgate power buttons. This happens for the same reason as second problem. Water, dirt, dust gets into the tailgate and builds up. Fix for this is to really clean all the wires and connectors and make sure everything is connected and tight.
Fourth and least possible problem is a failure of one of the power release switches / buttons. Fix for this is to replace the failed button.

A good advice is highly appreciated. I changed the actuator and switch and fuse. Still my ford escape 2010 hybrid lifgate won't open. What else should I do?

Hmmm you will have to test if power is coming to the liftgate. If not there could be a wiring problem somewhere. Also make sure to inspect all wiring and clean electrical connections on the liftgate

Hello, next time I am doing similar work I will make sure to record a video and publish it. You can clean electrical connections and wires from mud, corrosion using electrical contact cleaner.

It is very very common for liftgate actuator to fail on these 2nd gen Ford Escapes. I replaced bunch of those. You can get it cheap aftermarket on Amazon for like $50. I think I even have a video on my channel on how to do it

If thw window opens but the tailgate doesn't, would it be the fuse?

Not sure if they are on the same circuit so it is worth to check the fuse. This Escapes have major problems with the liftgate actuators and they fail almost always so that is the next thing I would check. Also if you take everything apart check and clean all electrical connections (especially liftgate switch)

How do you tell the fuse is no good?

Hi, pull it out and inspect the thin metal wire inside the fuse. If it is broken it means the fuse is burnt@@1billiedale
