Ford Escort MK2 - Building an RC: Tamiya MF-01X

This is a time lapse build of a custom Tamiya Ford Escort MK2 (MF-01x #58687 chassis). At the end of the video I show the complete results. I never thought of getting this chassis (MF-01x) because I was unsure if I would like the chassis design, the rally setup, and components. But when Tamiya released this particular kit, I was very interested because of the Escort MK2 body. When I was a kid we had a neighbor who had an MK2 RS1800. It was white, low, had minilite wheels, and motor modifications. Whenever it would drive by the neighborhood, I could hear the loud NA engine and I would run out to take a look.
My initial plan was to build it as intended-the rally version and box art. But as I saw completed builds from others, I felt that the kit itself didn’t do the actual rally car justice. Sometimes, it looked goofy or very toy-like. I was also unsure if I wanted a rally car setup. So the kit was stored for months before I decided what to do with it-eventually, I decided on-road with drift wheels and tires. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone post something like it yet so I thought it would interesting.
The 4WD MF-01x, I think, is an underrated chassis. It can be set to two different ride heights (low and high) and three different wheelbase lengths: S (210mm), M (225mm) or L (239mm). Another interesting characteristic is that this chassis has a playful rear end. I noticed on some run videos the rear has less traction. Probably has to do with a few things but two that stand out are how far the motor sticks out in the rear, and the dampers’ position. On the front, the dampers lay down closer to the center chassis which helps steering. On rear, it’s more upright-giving it less traction but increases damping. Then you have the sealed front and rear gearboxes which helps when running in dirt and dusty surfaces. I think it’s a versatile chassis for those who don’t have the budget to buy many kits as it can be adjusted for various setups.
Of course, this kit/chassis is more for bashing and just general “Tamiya” fun. There are some downsides and those that stick out for me: almost all the chassis parts are hard plastics that uses self-tapping screws-might be an issue with rebuilds; transmission/gearbox is quite loud; comes with plastic bushings; the dampers are friction style (no oil) so if you don’t replace it, it’s quite bouncy and drives more like a toy; body is pre-painted white (the color isn’t a problem for me as I actually wanted white) but the quality of the paint job is not what I would do if I painted it myself. Some areas had just enough paint and so it’s not the white finish I’m used to. Then the windows are smoke painted and I typically prefer a darker smoke finish-this one looks light and murky. There are other minor things but I think most who would buy this chassis are aware of the limitations. Some of these issues are irrelevant on my build because I upgraded some of the parts.
As for the theme, I wanted it to look simple in a classic way. Not overdo things and just focus on the stance if possible. One of the challenges I had were the wheels. I didn’t want to use the smaller M chassis wheels. I wanted larger diameter ones-somewhat like what Ken Block’s team did with his Hoonigan Escort. I was also limited by wheel offset. I believe the Turbomacs are 6mm and RS Watanabe are 9mm-and pairing that with a shorter and narrow M chassis Escort body is an issue. To help solve it, I used fender flares for a different car, so I had to do some trimming and figuring things out. I also had to trim a lot off of the wheel arches to accommodate those flares and full turn steering on the front wheels. As part of the fun, I added a sound simulator with something close to an Escort 2.0 NA engine.
Performance-wise, I upgrade the following: oil-filled dampers with hard springs and adjustable pistons so I can set different damping for the rears and fronts, replaced the Torque Tuned motor with a GT Tuned, Tamiya ball bearings, aluminum knuckles and hub carriers from Square Japan, and so on. Kept it to a minimum. Aside from Turbomac wheels, generic BBS style wheels, I also used RS Watanabe drift wheels with Yokomo Drift Competition DRA tires. Made a difference and made it so much fun to drive. On the short run video, the surface isn’t entirely smooth, it’s very abrasive and has little bumps but the dampers made it drive smooth and tires made it glide. In the end, I think this chassis and setup ended up being a hoot to drive.

Thanks, graham aker! The oil is optional. I used it on this build because I switched out the kit tapping screws with stainless machine hex screws and it just makes it easier to drive in when they're stubborn. Ideally, cutting oil works best.

Hey! The aesthetics of this build is top notch. The shocks look really good and I think using the softer springs is the way to go. I like how your builds are inspired by different memories from your past. I really like these small boxy rwd sports cars from the 70s… Datsun 510s, BMW 2002s, the Escort MK2. The white body with wider black wheels looks hot. Like the slammed look and the flares. So many little details and touches set this RC apart. Is that an e82? Love that chassis series and the 1M coupe model. You probably should stock up on parts/mods while they're not scarce.

Yes, it’s an e82. Automatic tranny (I originally got if for my wife) and naturally aspirated. The e82 shares almost all the suspension and performance parts with the 328i so I should be able to do some simple tweaks, widen the stance a bit. Maybe some more aggressive springs/shocks, exhaust and intake. 1M Coupe is an incredible car.

Mostly, what takes time is a combination of parts taking a while to arrive (or backordered) and just work outside of the hobby. As for the next ones, it's a running list. From a few TRFs, F1s, crawlers, vintage re-re buggies, current buggies, some discontinued on-road cars, restorations, and so on. The next video should be up sooner than later and it's a kit most don't buy or want, quite unexpected. Then it's a crawler.

Really nice job ! I'm a RC car enthusiast and whoo you have really cool tools. Could you describe what tools do you use ? For the oil on screws, be careful to avoid any plastic damages. Generally I use a CHC screw dedicated to create the thread. Then I remove it and put the definitive screw. Amazing model !

Hey David! Thanks for watching. The red driver is a generic one that is a clone of the black Muchmore Racing electric driver I primarily use. The red is just ok in comparison and I got it from a local hardware shop. The black Muchmore Racing bought it online. Servo tester is a Spektrum XBC100. It can also check batteries I believe.

Pierre, thanks for watching. Not sure where you are but I get my screws from McMaster-Carr (US). They have 18-8/304 and 316 in stainless. And zinc coated alloy (double the tensile strength of stainless). Some sizes in Titanium. All in round headed screws. Socket screws even have military spec/aviation screws. They also have vibration resistant ones. As for the Molykote 111, I primarily use it on o-rings, gaskets, rubber damper caps, the insides of the damper caps and potential areas where oil might leak out. Also use it to hold thin washers on various surfaces-especially difficult areas to keep washers in place while inserting screws or metal ball ends, etc. It also prevents o-rings and rubbers from seizing onto other surfaces. It’s not conductive, safer to handle, great water resistance, and so far harmless on plastics and various surfaces. Haven’t had a damper leak.

Thanks, JayC! The red one is a generic one I got from the local hardware store but you should be able to find one on Amazon. But the black one is a better one and it's a Muchmore Racing electric driver.

Hi Adam Shaver. The drive is a Muchmore Racing driver. I use a Team Associated ball cup wrench.

I have always wondered, why does tamiya use such hard plastics? is it proprietary? is it durable? I love tamiya cars, but have always wondered this.

I think it also has to do with Tamiya's background. They're primarily a plastic/static model and toy company and it must be for cost efficiency-and they probably already have the equipment to produce the plastics and mold. When their RC kits gets to race grade (or some of the higher end kits) then they do use carbon fiber or frp. But for enthusiast grade to even some hobby grade they seem to use plastic, and this makes it cheaper for consumers when they buy spare parts.

Very cool build just one thing and it's Tamiya not you! Something off with the rear side windows don't think there long enough. Where I live in the UK there are still a lot of these driving around unless the rally one was shortened slightly like the Audi Quattro was! But hey pretty car for sure! 😁👍

Things like the Old Opel GTE's and The old school Cosworths.. I had a older Alfa for a while that had a flat 4 1.5 boxer engine in it.. 1.5 Sprint I think it was.. Can the Tamiya RZ motor run on TBLE-02s without any problem? I mean can you try that?

I'm not sure it can but I haven't tried-don't have a spare RZ for this car. The limit on the TBLE-02s is 25T brushed motor-which I am using on this build a GT Tuned 25T (18-19k rpm @500 torque). The ESC's heatsink gets quite hot but hasn't cut off yet. I would assume the RZ 23T (26-27.5k rpm @500 torque) you can run for just a little bit before the ESC's overheat protection kicks in or it just burns out, or it might not run at all. Probably the best alternative is to use the TBLE-02s' brushless setup for a faster motor.

Hmm.How about the TZ or BZ motor?The brushless motor is just too expensive for me.

I believe the TZ and BZ are slightly close to the RZ with maybe 500 rpm less and a slightly different power curve. Might be an issue too. Only way to know is try. I can probably try to test one but it will be at no load (no car and weight) so it won’t be accurate and not real world where environmental temp and driving affects the esc. On the Tamiya site it notes Sport Tuned motors and if that is the actual Sport Tuned motor, that is a 23T but it only has 18-19k RPM @350 torque. The only other motor I can think of is the Tamiya UGT which is a 24T instead of 23T. About 19400 rpm @500 torque. All these numbers are at no load.

I think that might be the cheapest way to use the RZ motor. I believe a Hobbywing Quicrun 1060 is the cheapest you can get that's decent.
