I purchased a smoker last year and I'm having the same issue you described with your explorer. I just recently replaced a leaking valve cover and while i was at it i replaced the ERG value. So now I'm running much higher than the numbers you have. I have a 1999 XLT explorer with 256k miles on it. I so a lot of maintenance and have everyone tell me to just get rid of it until they ride in the car with me and realize it runs better than theirs. So now I'll pull out the smoke and see if and where there is a leak. That you for your videos as they provide a lot of help for guys like me who want to do their own repairs.

I ordered that smoke machine like yours. I'll be using it on my 06 Nissan Frontier 4.0L V6 for that same problem except the engine feels like it has a rumble like a motor mount that may have collapsed but does not shake the vehicle. Bank one has a higher than bank two LTFT. As always thankyou for this video, it is helpful.

Nice job, love your videos!!! 👊 I’m dealing with an egr code 34 voltage too high in an oldie but goodie 1986 ford e-150 Exhaust smells rich… I’ll need to check the vacuum lines next, electrically the sensor and wire integrity checks out, I replaced the egr with one from standard! It’s smoke time next too!!! Very annoying can’t pass smog, and OBD1 🥶 can’t communicate with this beast….

I have a 2004 mustang and it has a very slight shake at idle that is felt in the floorpan/seat. It is a shake and not a vibration. I run mode 6 and get misfires every once in a while but I have no idea when it is even recording them. My fuek trim at idle is +8% and +4%...I revved to 3000 and rpms didn't change so I'm ruling out vacuum leak. I'm starting to think it isn't engine performance related and more to do with a balance issue either with the mounts (highly unlikely) trans mount, torque converter or harmonic balancer. Rpms don't change when it happens. I have put in new plugs wires and coil pack. I ran vacuum gauge to it to determine even compression and any valve issues and it holds steady at 22 inches. Needle doesn't budge. I'm thinking this is either fuel injectors that are clogged causing a fuel injector balance issue where I get like minor misfires at idle that the pcm might not even detect but I do.....or the mode 6 just isn't even looking at misfires at idle. I really wish I can get a scanner that can give me LIVE mode 6 misfire data. Sorry for long post but has anyone ever had a bad harmonic balancer cause intermittent shaking at idle. I did look at it and the rubber does appear to be dry rotting/cracking

Awesome explanation and diagnosis. You explained live data to a tee. Spot on, I definitely think you enlightened DIY people. Not a big investment for your OBII. I have the luxury of computers. Definitely enjoyed the application of the smoke test. You did an amazing job catching the bubbling, most people would just replace the valve. If you have an endoscope it can be very useful in tight areas that aren’t visible, especially for mechanics like me that are vision challenged. Overall you earned a like and follow.🤚🇺🇸

That’s awesome I have the same issue with a 2004 explorer. Got back from shop after a new head gaskets and timing chain it’s still has slight shake. Going to do this on my own have all the tools. Infamous 4L v6 so I was leaning timing chain. Paid $3600 for engine pull etc. Idle was worse. They also replaced intake manifold they didn’t charge for. Lol

Sure glad I found this vid as I have the same rough idle problem in a '03 Explorer 4.6. New plugs, wires, injectors etc haven't helped much. I suspect a vacuum leak as it's periodic and the engine runs great and makes power. I suspect the plastic intake manifold but first I'll have to make a smoke machine. Thanks for posting this!

Wow thank you so much. I notice reading my fuel trims the numbers were 30 for long term and short term would be about the same or slightly more. When I'm at 3k rpms. I was driving the other day and only when the vehicle has warmed up I end up having a rough idle. And when I want to accelerate it would bog down and hesitate it would lag or worst case go nowhere and just bog down horribly. Reading these trims I can understand now. I'm kinda bummed out because I bought a brand new Delphi fuel pump from AutoZone and can't believe it's bad or defective. Now I'm a have to check and replace it again. But before I do I'm gonna check my fuel pressure regulator. Only thing I did notice was that my car would trigger a p0301 and then the p0171 is that meaning that the misfire is on cylinder one around the engine in that particular area. I was assuming fuel injector I already swapped it over but I get no check engine light telling me nothing.

Use caution though when it comes to aftermarket gaskets on EGR valves. That smaller orifice on that old gasket maybe there for a reason. Ford may be solving some kind of a drivability issue with a calibrated orifice on that metal gasket.

This could be the issue to my Sonata, the engine mounts are fine (new sparkplugs too) but still rough idles on traffic lights. It's also intermittent like you mentioned just that it's getting more often for me now. Drove 3x today with 2 drives having the rough idle issue and 1 just fine.

My Nissan Sentra started doing this out of nowhere about a week ago. It used to idle around 500 (1000 cold start) but now it won't go below 700rpm and up to 2000 cold start.

what if the Bank 2 is high for me its 16% and Bank 1 is 11% , on high RPM Bank 1 become 0 and Bank 2 become 2.5%, recently i have changed Intake Gas Kits but not the EGR Gaskit, for Bank 2 what other things can leak the vacuum? Great video. Just be aware that this video is only applicable to engines that use a MAF Sensor. Engines with a MAP Sensor only will not be affected in this way.as they will use the leak in the fuelling calculations. Hope this helps someone

I recently replaced a bunch of parts on my 03 F150 5.4, I did a smoke test on it and smoke was coming from a little cap on the backside of the IAC valve (which is also brand new). I'm not sure if it is supposed to come out there or not...😬🧐🧐

i have the same problem with my old 175,000 mi 06 coloraro , usually when i slow down to stop it has just a slight shake, stumble, fuel trims are in spec, it does have a 455 large leak code, guess its time to smoke it, happy turkey day🦃 to u and urs, thanks for posting

Smoke will still come from that EGR valve even with a new gasket because they are equipped with a pin hole underneath the metal circular section, closest to the manifold. Had the same exact issue with a rough idle only at stops, however the misfire and shaking idle disappeared with the AC switched on. I replaced the fuel filter and it immediately corrected my issue. Could barely blow air through the old filter.

Excellent video - I have a new 2023 Ford Expedition with only two thousand miles! and a problem happened with the fuel pump earlier and the dealer changed my fuel pump. After that it began to do this slight shake when stopped. Dealer can’t diagnose the problem and said no codes present and it’s normal to have a slight shake!! What can I do ? It’s driving me crazy. Note: car drives good with no loss of power. Only this shake when stopped.

Do you know what other vaccum leaks or issues can cause the same exact issue? Motor sounds healthy, No CEL, but I get the same popping I'm the tailpipe and when I move the intake or things in the area, it fluctuates

my 2010 just did this today- it was jumping up and down- was going to bring it in tomorrow morniing, went to try to pick up son at school and I could not the engine would start then fail. I am not sure what this is, hope it is easy fix and hope I can start again b4 tomorrow morning to bring it in.

Check your charcoal canister, several perch valve, which is located by the engine or if it’s not that one check towards the back of the car I could be the charcoal canister purge valve stuck
