Part 2 in the sunroof track replacement series for Ford F-Series trucks
This is how you swap over the parts that are reused from the old track to
the new one.
Part number for the new track: FL3Z-16502C22-E
That track # fits 2015-2018 for sure, as long as you have the same front deflector as in the video.

Great videos. Unfortunately for me the plastic tabs that hold the sun visor broke. Was hoping for an easy fix for a couple pieces of plastic. Looks like it might be a whole new track. Great.

The tabs that move the shade, you mean? Yeah, that's bad news if so. They only come with a new track.

that little plastic piece next to the guide jaw. the one that connects to the little spring that holds the drip bar up. does that little plastic piece have a name? I need a new one so my drip bar doesn't hang down and rattle but I can't find it anywhere! It looks like it should come out of the whole track with ease but the part doesn't seem to exist.

Question, what size bit or rivet did you use to remove the screw like things that were holding the mesh wind deflector down in place?

@@TheBanks148 the one I use is a 13/64, which is slightly bigger than the hole that's in the track. I use a rivet that Ford dealers tend to carry that is that size. It's aluminum and very easy to install versus one that is steel. I don't know exactly what size the original hole is but it's probably the very next size down from that, I just did not find rivets that size readily available and the Ford dealer had one that was just a hair bigger so I just use them

Thanks for going through the trouble of making the videos. After I put the track/frame back in my ‘17 f150 & before I tightened down the motor (after cable guide and arm replacements) I pressed the close button to make the motor run until it “thought” the window was in a closed position since the slides were all the way forward. The motor ran for a bit and then made kind of a click sound when it stopped. Now the motor won’t respond to any button presses at all. Tried leaving it unplugged, fuse is good, & tried the reset procedure to no avail. I’m hoping it didn’t burn itself out after running with no load on it… any thoughts?

I think (hope) I fixed it. I disconnected Both the sunroof and sunshade motors and reconnected them. After I plugged them back in, the sunroof motor is responding again.

@@SealofPerfection too soon to celebrate, unfortunately. When I did the reset, the motor kept driving the cable forward after hitting the stop at the front of the track. It kinked the cables & pushed them out the top of the frame. I got them back out and straightened them, but this is the same thing it did before I replaced ed the cables & arms. The frame/track is good with no impediments, and cables slide freely. For some reason the motor just doesn’t stop when it hits the end of its travel distance. The first time it kinked was because the old cable guide was broken. Any idea why the motor wouldn’t be stopping during the reset/programming mode?

@@lucaswollermann9064 That's a weird one. My first thought was that the aftermarket cables might be faulty, but if it did it with the factory ones that probably shoots down that thought. Only other thing is, either the track "tunnel" itself got damaged with the original issue, or the motor is somehow bad and simply isn't recognizing when the resistance starts and doesn't stop there. They are VERY strong and can easily do what you're describing if the programming inside them fails.

@@SealofPerfection thanks for the fast replies. I’m hoping it’s just the motor… I thought the programming for the sunroof was stored in the pcm and the motor could only measure resistance/drag. I’m going to try getting a motor first since that’s only a couple hundred vs replacing the entire frame for 1600. I’ll try to pop back & let you know the result for future reference.

I have a 2018 F150. I see different part numbers that work like the drain trough you mentioned is the complete assembly the same? I found a wrecked 2022 on a local yard wandering if it will fit my 2018?

@@roberthamrick23 Unfortunately not. The motors are different. You could use the guts of it to rebuild yours, though.

@@SealofPerfectionMy aftermarket cable broke on mine and even after releasing the motor it still won't come out. It's like it's jammed inside the track. The other side slides freely with the motor undone. Any ideas? Thanks for your help

@@SealofPerfection well the driver side I got it back level so I could put the glass back in . The entire part that fits in the arm in the whole broke off. I have pulled on that cable with pliers and it just won't budge. Watched your video on how to install in the truck and everything went smooth.sunroof went back and forth and as soon as I vented it it's like it started popping and after I got it down it broke. Just can't get the cable to let go

@@roberthamrick23 something is definitely binding up in there. I wonder if the cable started to come apart in the back. Even if you could get it apart, I don't know if I would try putting another cable in there. Something may be damaged inside that little tunnel the cable goes in

Yeah I actually have one from where I was filming my son's wrestling matches. I thought about using it but I thought what I needed the film was mostly closed up where I needed to hold it. I probably will definitely use it in the future thanks

I had to order a new piece you just called the trough that goes between the two pieces of glass. Arm in the passenger side snapped for some reason.

I have a 2015 f150 with the panoramic sunroof. After a good rain, i have a skunky like snell on my truck. All of the drain holes are clear and functioning properly. Do you think that i need to replace the seal on the glasses? Also, where are you located?

It's possible the seals are not doing their jobs, but the first thing would be to find where the water is. Then you can work backwards and trace where it's coming in at. These trucks have a ton of places where they leak water.

Can you replace the foam seal in the middle rain catcher between the two pieces of glass? Mine doesn’t seem to be sealing well and causing wind noise.

I suppose you can but you won't have to source it from somewhere. The big box stores might well have one that's the correct size that will work.

@@1tufgt not necessarily not sealing, but they do shrink up and they don't extend out as far as they should. So it's not that they are not sealing, they just aren't out there where they need to be

Yeah the foam seal is compressed more than when it originally was.

@@1tufgt for the most part it is really just kind of a wall to keep water that drips in between the glasses from splattering on the occupants. And to direct it off to the troughs on the side. If the trough was there without much of a wall, the water can come in hard enough to splatter over. So it really doesn't have to seal super tightly to do its job

how do you rebuild old track? where can you buy new track that does not cost arm and leg?

Depends on what you call an arm and a leg, lol. They are about 1300-ish online. Usually around 2k at the dealer, unless you know someone there. Some aftermarket sources are now selling the lower guides and cables, which is usually what breaks that causes track replacement. I have a set, and a couple of broken tracks, and will be doing a video on how to do it soon.

@@SealofPerfectionI have replaced the lower guides and cables on both sides and still am having issues with the drivers side. The motor makes a grinding noise and the cable gets stuck won’t fully function all the way. The shade is also stuck in the half way open position. Can’t figure out how to get the shade moving again as well. Really trying to not buy a whole new track if it’s possible to fix the current one. Thanks

@@mattm2254 Need to make 100% sure you got all the broken pieces out of the track. Figure out which lower guide won't move freely and check that side thoroughly. All the way to the back, you have to stick your fingers up in the greasy part of the track sometimes, and if you have a small mirror and a flashlight that sometimes helps. The grinding is usually the motor gear slipping on the cable that won't move....and usually they won't move because the guide has encountered a broken piece. Shade is at halfway because the glass doesn't fully closed. Fix that and the shade will take care of itself.

@@SealofPerfectionI figured there was more debris in the track which is what I kept looking for but it’s hard to see all the way back there with the shade stuck in that half was open position. Is there a way to manually retract the shade?

@@mattm2254 you can drop the shade motor and just push it back using both the far edges of the shade bar very gently and evenly

Absolutely, I've done a bunch of them in the truck. It's tight, but it can be done. Remove the front glass. Slightly open the track so the arms drop down. Loosen the back glass and slide it as far forward as it will go. And then I stand up in the hole in the back and work from there. It is tight, but it will absolutely come out of there
