@Steady TrollingGood luck! Would love to see! I'm actually in the process of trying to get mine turned over after sitting for 10 years. Pulled the old gas tank yesterday and ordered a new one. Today I'm going to pull the injectors and fuel rails to clean them and blow out the fuel lines.

But the car was sitting for two years before started again. Someone before me started the car maybe missed something up. Great video and info. I rebuilt my 4.6 a couple of years ago due to a strange momentary overheating problem. Seems to be an issue with a 4.6. I found leaking intake gaskets, same location you added sealant. I didn't use sealant and now I'm having the same issue. Either the machine shop didn't properly machine the heads properly and I have a blown head gasket or the intake is leaking. I know there are hydro carbons in the cooling system evident by a block test. Any thoughts about a leaking intake gasket causing cavitation in the water pump housing. This is only momentary, the tempature goes to hot the engine immeditly goes back to normal and all is well until the engine is shutdown and cools. Any thoughts as to what this might be, blown head gasket or intake gasket?
@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 6 жыл бұрын
Robert Robinette If there is hydrocarbons in the cooling system it has to be a cylinder head or head gasket problem. It won’t be the intake manifold.

Valuable video. I have a 98 4.6l with a blown head gasket. Since I am not a mechanic, I am pondering whether just replacing the engine would be easier to do than repairing the head gasket? Would swapping engines still requiring breakdown of the head? Thanks
@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 4 жыл бұрын
If you want to do a real good job by putting the spark plug thread inserts in, then yes you would have to pull the heads. It’s not actually required to do that, but those engines do have problems with the spark plugs blowing out. It would be much better if you did pull the heads.

Was there no way to hang the A/C compressor and not crack the lines to get the motor out? I'm about to do a PI head / intake swap to mine, and am debating leaving the motor in the truck, vs pulling it out. After 250k on mine, I'm assuming my rear crank seal looks less than stellar... either way it would be nice to know... I can't vac my system here so that would be an added cost for me. Thoughts?

@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 4 жыл бұрын
The problem was from the factory they weren’t tightened down tight. Then they come lose and since they only have 1/4 of an inch of threads, then the plugs blow out. If you replace the spark plugs at like 75K miles it won’t blow them out. I worked on nothing but Ford trucks at my last job. So I know very well about the spark plug problem.

Hello awesome and informative video. I do have a question, I have a 98 f150 4.6 I got it from my uncle. It has a ton of oil buildup on the passenger side all right under my headers and all I’ve by the oil pan. I checked the plug, the pan bolts and can’t seem to find where the leak is coming from. Any advice would help immensely.
@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 6 жыл бұрын
Humboldt Rootz The only thing you can do is clean it up real good. Then drive it and keep checking for oil leaks. Then maybe you can find where it’s coming from. Could be the valve cover gasket or the timing chain cover that’s leaking.

@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 5 жыл бұрын
+SkywallGuttz More than likely the valve cover gaskets are leaking. They normally leak very slow and it takes a very long time for oil to get down there. So you won’t see oil in the upper part of tge tubes.

My 4.6 triton on a 97 f150 has pressed on cam gears and can't be replaced without changing the cams... just great. So I found a set of heads with cams from a 4.6 romeo engine, gonna be doing a head exchange job on it when in the beginning all i needed was a timing chain and gear replacement. Just like this job always one thing leads to another, in the end, you end up with more work than expected replacing more parts than expected... I hate when that happens.

I have a 2000 f150 5.4 when I leave it sitting for a week without starting, then I start it. The truck smokes a lot for about 30 minutes. After that it goes back to normal and if I start it regularly, it doesn’t smoke. Also the coolant level drops overtime. I checked for mixture in the oil and coolant but all clean. Did a block cooler sniff test but it shows good. The truck drives good and no overheating issue. I don’t know if I should just use a little bit of the head gasket sealer to see if it works out. Also I have heard that it’s hard to take out one of these engines for a swap, is that true? Thanks
@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 5 жыл бұрын
kchilz32 Don’t put stop leak in it. There is only one way to see if there is a head gasket issue. The other ways don’t work well. You have to take it by a place that does emissions testing. They will take the radiator cap off, start it up, and hold the probe that goes up the exhaust pipe near where the radiator cap goes. If there is any hydrocarbons it’s bad. Another thing that can make it smoke on start up is the valve guides and seals.
@kchilz32
@kchilz32 5 жыл бұрын
1970chevelle396 so the blue liquid carbon test won’t work? (The one that goes where the radiator cap is). Also, would the valve guides cause slow loss of coolant? Thanks again and great video. Also how hard to pull the engine out?
@1970chevelle396
@1970chevelle396 5 жыл бұрын
kchilz32 The blue liquid only works if it’s a real bad leak. That’s why I never use it. When it’s a real bad leak you will know just by how bad it runs. The valves will not cause it to lose coolant. For me it wasn’t to hard to pull the engine out, But I’ve been a mechanic for 27 years.
@kchilz32
@kchilz32 5 жыл бұрын
1970chevelle396 thanks so much! I’m leaning towards a minor head gasket leak. I will see if a shop can do the emissions sniff test and make sure it is but if it is I don’t know if I should just drive it till it gets worse or get it done as soon as possible. I’ll probably go towards the route of a used engine and just swap it and rebuild the old one

I took it in today to have the spark plugs swapped & sure enough the mech tells me the holes already have the inserts & advised me to get the heads replaced at some point in the coming months depending on much I drive it. Correct me if I’m wrong. But that engine looks like it’s port injected, right? I have a 2006 4.6 f150. What would be the difference between mine and this one? And could someone quickly name the different types of camshafts if there are any? I’m considering replacing mine with a used engine and want to know if it’s worth it. Are these engines long lasting? Any pros and cons I should consider? What if I’m just a city driver? Took mine to a Ford dealership. They said I needed a new engine. That 2 cylinders were low on compression, causing a misfire. I also noticed when I checked the spark plugs, that 2-3 of them had oil buildup on the tip.

Yes these engines last a long time. The best thing you can do to it is put the spark plug inserts in it. I think 2006 is the same. Yes there port injected.

@@marcusmercadosl7886 It's not possible to give you any kind of ballpark. I think the labor rate in Florida is a lot less than here in California. It also depends on what a machine shop will charge to do the heads. And if any shop out there will do it that way.

Richard Gates I’ve done the E250 vans before. It can be done without pulling the engine. Some of the head bolts wont come all the way out. I pulled them up as high as they would go and put a rubber band around them to keep them all the way up. Then you can pull the head. When you put it back together you have to do the same thing.

Thanks, that sounds doable. I just need to make sure I've got the right tools before I start. With over 300,000 miles I want to see how far it will go. A seemingly simple thing like changing the front shocks and sway bushings can turn into a major ordeal.

Wow you know your stuff. I just bought a used 2001 5.4 Ford Expedition 4wd with 150k miles for $ 1,200. Bucks from a buddy I think that’s a great deal? He just put in new plugs and wires on top of plugs. But I need to put in a new intake manifold leaking coolant at the cross over I guess that’s a common problem for it. Is there anything else you might think about for me to do for maintenance or whatever idea. ? I don’t have much money. So probably I just go with it and when something really breaks then fix it. I just thought it would be fun to have a truck again and it’s nice and roomy too it runs great as far I can tell. A have truck not for speed just cruising around and driving off road fun.

Just a question about the 4 WD when I am in N and put it in 4 WD Low there is a good clunk sound from it ?? Is that normal maybe for a big Ford Expedition 4wd? I just had the valve cover gaskets replaced. I am praying its them. The shop I took it to said it's oil leaking from the head. My option is to just drive it with the leak until coolant gets in or spend thousands to fix it. The car is at most worth 4k right now. I just don't know what to do. Here is the replacements I did in 2017-2018. Struts, sway bar links, intake manifold and gaskets, valve cover gaskets, plugs and coils, pcv lines and valve, water pump, thermostat, belt, and driver side window controls. Right now the leak is slow and it's just oil no coolant.

@1970chevelle396 5 жыл бұрын
myriadcorp I’ve done lots of Cylinder head jobs on the Ford Triton engines. Not one of them was for an oil leak. I think it’s coming from someplace else. They might have damaged one of the valve cover gaskets when they put it on. There is very little room to get the right side valve cover off. So maybe that side partially came out of the cover when they put it back on.
@myriadcorp
@myriadcorp 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Hopefully that's it. I think we are going to put some die in the oil and use a black light to find where the leak is coming from for sure.
