Years ago I drove a customers Volvo 940 and the tach operated perfectly backwards... 7k was max number, it idled around 6 and went down perfectly as the engine revved up. It was funny as he'll to me, I bet the customer probably didn't even know it was wrong.

Hah, those 940 tachs... I used to have one that did 80km/h on the speedo while standing still, went to 0 and then started shaking up once moving, the actual speed was the average of the 30-40km/h range the needle was shaking between. It also had start-stop: below 2000rpm the needle just went to zero, above 2k it was accurate.

I thought the vehicle speed sensor is usually mounted on the output shaft of the t-case. But no...Ford had to go and reinvent the wheel AS USUAL hahaha! Great vid Eric :)

On the manual trans manual t case it is. In this case being all electronic it runs off bus inputs and the trans oss sensor :)

I've got a 94 Ranger and MY only complaint is the speedometer is all over the place. About 10-15 mph slow on the low side and then slaps the peg past 85 before I get to 70. Sometimes it stays buried, sometimes it jumps back and forth. Seems to be a common problem from what I see online. I just ignore it. Hard to find in a junkyard, only 93-94 will interchange.

probably the reason to transfer case ran empty of oil is they thought the oil came from the transmission into the tranfer case. Many people think that.. Eveyone needs to check the oil level in the transfer case which is separate from the transmission. And its not just fords either..

Funny you say that I once used to manage a fleet of recovery trucks and had a driver complain his truck had no power and it was struggling to do 50 flat out, So I take it out for a quick test drive and got a suspision the turbo isn't working but before I booked it in at the garage I noticed this driver had 3 floor mats piled on top of each other and they were blocking the pedal....... Threw out the pile of mats and it drove great.

I bought a 68 Cougar that would max out out at 50. Someone adjusted the throttle linkage so the butterfly would only open about halfway. Readjusted the linkage and could get 50 in first. First time I drive it fast I knocked all the carbon loose, and the car ran like crap. Took it out on the interstate and ran it flat out for twenty miles. It purred like a kitten after that.

Not a truck, but I had a car years ago that had a floor mat that liked to travel forward. I got into the habit of "scuffing" it back into place whenever I drove it. I notice now with the cars I've had that they usually have "hooks" in the floors where the mat is locked into. Very handy.

The one I had was a 2007. That design is spliced in at that point. I looked up the earlier trucks and looks like its one piece, but when you buy a new OEM one its sold as 2.

Most cars I see up on a ramp have one piece OE exhaust systems from the factory. When you get a replacement in they tend to be multiple parts, perhaps it's on its second exhaust system.

Ahh, they're all good videos man! 👍 Got another LONG Smitty story for ya ... :D I had a similar one to this back in '12 - my buddy's '88 Isuzu Trooper locked up solid on his wife, right in a city school parking lot, blocking at least 200 cars dropping kids off, LOL. The kids were all in tears from embarrassment. Anyway, I got the call, and told him I'd take care of it. Thing was on a hill, AND in the rain, of course. 5-speed tranny with transfer case married to it - threw it and the case in neutral and still had to drag it on my trailer with the winch ... and as soon as the rear wheels shoved my ramps in, and got over the lip, my truck TOOK OFF down the hill, because I'm a moron and forgot my wheel chocks!! I had to run with everything I had, whip the door open, jam myself between the seat and brake pedal, and hold the brake until I regained control, just feet from going off the road and through a stone wall! Rear wheels were so light, the parking brake was useless - had to jam it in 4x4 to hold it in place, HAHAHA! Fun times, LOL!! Anyway, the story with this one was, his father-in-law who lives in VA bought the Trooper years ago for his son. Was a GA truck, 100% rust free (and still is for the most part). Son blew 5th, so he yanked the tranny/transfer case assembly, got a boneyard unit, and swapped them out. Since the 2 units were married, he thought the transmission oil took care of the t-case. NOPE!! (He's pretty high up in the VW chain too). He drove that thing 600+ miles up here to MA to give it to my buddy, who was in a pinch at the time. They drove it another 100 miles before it began binding occasionally - my buddy would rock it back and forth from R to 1st and break it free (OUCH!!) ... until finally it locked solid at the school. When I got it, I got a TEASPOON of BLACK, stinky motor oil out of it! The nylon roller bearing cages melted, and sent rollers into all the gears, chipping and smashing them. The counter shaft was WAY out of line, and bound the whole unit up! Pretty impressed it made it that far! I thought sensor at first before seeing/hearing it run, the fast rev, jerky shifts and looking like it had 1000+ ft.lbs. torque was enough to figure stuck in low and seeming to not be in 4wd was odd. the obliterated t-case explains it all :)

LOL, if the only comlpain was the speedo, just put the selector in low and superglue it. Now it reads fine, and we also can continue pretending that the trasnfer case is not granaded ... LOL. Nice one Mr. O.

Don’t think I really understand why the broken transfer case affected the speedo. I think I pieced together that the speedo takes it’s data from different places based on what function the sensor on the transfer case is in?

I'm just an old mechanic from years ago now retired but do they refer to that motor as a servo? Just wondering if the servo motor itself wasn't engaging four-wheel drive all the way and was in between that's how it got locked up and shredded everything the pieces?

Usually when I drop a transfer case (and this is just how I do it, your mileage may vary) I plan on changing the fluid in it as well. Soooo I'll drain the fluid out and ensure the top fill plug also cracks free. Sense I do not have a lift and use the adapters on a floor jack, the lighter the better for weight. If I'm guessing, I'd say these guys drained the transfer case fluid, slapped it back together and took it for a spin after the trans was installed. They likely got hammering on it. All the while never thinking to FILL the transfer case after replacement of the transmission. Eric: you mentioned one of the guys works for a "Shop". I'm guessing you get a lot of their business after they 'fix' things?

You said there's a code for the rear ABS speed sensor. The readings from that sensor is how the car knows how fast it's going in 2wd drive mode

I don't know, it just drives funky. Can you fix it? My brother and I got a great deal on a '70 Maverick because the manual transmission was making a weird noise. My father was with us and said we should get because it was only about 4 yrs old with about 100,000 miles. I think we paid maybe $150. Got it home checked the fluid and it was pretty much dry. Put some gear oil in it and drove it for quite a while. Thanks for sharing.

oh how i wish you could walk into a mechanic and get the same service this guy gives... here in Australia, you'll go for a wheel alignmet and somehow found out your head gaskets blown and you need a new tailshaft

There might be another reason: when I take my car in, I take it in for ONE purpose. Probably because I seem like a female that knows nothing about her vehicle, shop people (not just "mechanics") have tried to sell me a bill of goods, when I know better. Stuff like a belt they said was about to break , which my husband had JUST replaced a few weeks before. That's why I stay with mechanics that I know, and that know me and my husband. They know the whole story, and won't try BS'ing me. We know Eric won't do that, but it could have been a first-time customer with a similar story.

Sometimes it can bias the mechanic toward looking for a problem where none exists. Considering one of the people "fixing" the vehicle works in a shop...frankly - who knows.

interesting problem this go around Eric, i guess some folks feel that giving part of the story is somehow gonna mean ya will wave a magic wand at it and alaka kazam you'll fix the problem... just like ya said Eric. I did see the glitter coming out in that fluid as you were showing it. per usual you targeted in on the real problem. hope your New Year is going good.
