Rockport1911 yea it can handle it, but the question is how does it hold up over time... and the answer is they don’t. My dad used to pull 24-32k lbs with a 2001 2500hd duramax for years until he got a different job, and he traded that truck in with 356k miles.

@chevyon37s5 жыл бұрын
Jacob Long you’re either full of shit or it’s a load you’ve pulled very few times. Or maybe just have the lightest 40+ ft trailer and smallest machines known to man. Because for your average 38’+ gooseneck weight and average bobcat weights that’s more than double the rated towing capacity of any 350/3500 made in 2000. You’re talking 28k+ pounds minimum for for a long ass deck over gooseneck trailer and two bobcats. You can maintain (maintenance isn’t the same a repair) them all you want but that doesn’t do much to help when you’re physically exceeding what the parts can handle and they break which leads to having constantly repairing the truck, then still deal with the risk of overheating. I run a 2000 ram 3500 for my old farm truck and with an 18’ bumper pull skidloader trailer and a 10k lb T650 on it with nothing more than a bale spear attachment on the truck barely gets out of its own way towing that and that load weight wise is a touch over the max tow rating. and I’ve often exceeded that with adding hay and other attachments on. And the truck with 233k miles hasn’t held up, and it’s maintained the best that you can maintain a truck with regular fluid changes, filters greasing all the fittings, brakes etc. But just little more than a month ago it stripped all the teeth off 4th gear hauling cattle. Three years ago the trans broke an input shaft, it’ll blow the intercooler boots off when towing heavy if you can’t keep it out of higher boost levels, and its had countless U-joints replaced in every location.

BTW that shudder you felt near the top of the grade when hauling a heavy load is the wheels slipping and the limited slip trying to keep up. When hauling a heavy load up a steep grade or a gravel hill I always use 4 wheel full time drive. If I were hauling that heavy truck that 12 percent grade I would have started at the bottom in 4 wheel low and took my time. In any given situation the faster you try to go up a hill the more energy it takes per second or minute. When you stopped and put the Ford into 4 low the transmission temperatures went down. That's because it takes less energy to pull at a slower rate but more time. Basically: "Work Done" = Time x Energy. more Time = less Energy.

Who gives a shit about the truck. It's the other lives on the road. Trust me I move drinking rigs in Northern Alberta and BC and regularly haul 80 000lbs to 120 000lbs + on 24 to 48 wheel or more trailer combinations and the thoughts that trump everything else when we are scaling loads, doing load securement, dealing with mechanics making sure nothing is half assed and trucks, trailers, jeeps and boosters are all in their best working order is the thoughts of everyone else on the roads. A full size pickup could slam into our winch tractors or big bed trucks and they could pass away, we may get whiplash. If we run into a 4 wheeler be it car, truck, SUV, whatever the case, it will likely be a fatality especially if on highways. That's why we do extensive "pre trip" inspections/walk around, always check slack adjusters on our brake, most of us a properly certified and trained in load securement, and so much more. If one doesn't care about their own life they damn well need to care about others.

So. We hauled two standad tread tractors from Iowa to Ohio with a 88 ford non turbo diesel. Check the weight before unloading 65K plus. Truck was fine and the trailer was fine afterwards. 45K is normal run to the tractor pulls with two or three tractors plus extra weights. One of the biggest problem today is no more sticks and crap for gears with tall tires.

Problem is these 3/4 ton trucks are way too powerful to do any heavy duty work without constantly derating themselves. Notice how much lower their ratings are when they put the same engine in an F650 or F750. These engines are already high strung, and dont have the cooling capacity of a larger medium duty truck like a 640 or 750. Yes these trucks a rated to tow that much but is it really a good idea? No.

That F350 has been really impressive in what you have done to it. I'm surprised you didn't kill the motor yet. We run F550's and never haul as much as you, and they have No Power, huge turbo lag and I have even had one 6.7L PSD spun the bearings. I wouldn't go anything over a F350 pickup box truck because the F550 has reduced horsepower rating of only 330hp and a weaker turbo.

I hope you are not running with your front hubs locked in 4 Low on dry pavement with the truck completely maxed out for load? If so you are going to destroy something in your drive-train VERY, VERY quickly (but there is an easy solution). Sometimes it will be the front driveshaft that twists and gets destroyed, other times you'll pop a front right or left u-joint, sometimes you'll actually break the front ring and pinion, front .differential or transfer case. Every single one of these is an expensive repair job. The easy fix when on pavement is to simply run with the front hubs open/unlocked. This gives you 2 Low, which is the only way to drive in low range when loaded on pavement without causing major & expensive damage. You'll have more than enough weight on the rear tires for traction on pavement and now 2 Low will give you incredible pulling power without the risk of destroying the front drive-train. Note that the reason the front drive-train gets destroyed is NOT because of how hard the front is working to pull the trailer. The reason it gets destroyed is because the front and rear wheels always rotate at slightly different speeds (even when going straight due to differences in load and effective tire diameter). This causes the front and rear to fight each other and the only thing giving out to handle the different speeds is the tires skidding on the ground. With all that weight your tires have so much grip that with the front and rear fighting each other like that it doesn't take long before something fails (and the front end is not as strong as the rear). Also if your truck has automatic front hubs you should be able to convert it to manual hubs for around $100-200. Good luck.
@estebanamador76015 жыл бұрын
Yes, but 4 low in 2 wheel drive with this kind of truck and load could be a life countdown for the rear axle and diff, just too much torque.
@Slider685 жыл бұрын
@@estebanamador7601 the torque that the rear diff has to handle when using 4wd low range with the center diff locked is far higher (due to the front and rear fighting each other) than when using 2wd low range. Assuming he has been using 4wd low range with the center locked he will be reducing the torque load on the rear by disabling the front. I've been doing this with my K30 for many years when hauling 20,000 lb wagons (delivering hay locally) and you can "feel" how the truck works so much harder and slows down much faster when using 4wd low lock vs when using 2wd low. In my case I'm using an old enough truck that my transfer case has both a 4wd low range with the center locked and a 2wd low range so I can switch back and forth from inside the cab without having to mess with the front hubs.
@estebanamador76015 жыл бұрын
@@Slider68 yeah but that's why locked 4wd only can be used in off road, because any difference of speed between axles could be relief by wheel spin. Your truck it's ok because axles are overbuild vs the total torque that your truck has, but with the torque of new engines, the drivetrain will not have enough durability.
@Slider685 жыл бұрын
@@estebanamador7601 Even with my truck's beefed up axles (Dana 60 with 35 spline axles front & full floating 14 bolt rear, 4.88 gears & Detroit lockers in both) I only use 4wd when the wheels would spin in 2wd. There is one customer's laneway that is so steep that when hauling 2 wagons (40,000 lb) my rear tires will spin in 2wd on dry pavement. In 4wd low range it has no problem hauling even 3 loaded wagons (60,000 lb) up that same driveway but 4wd on pavement is only used for that 100 yard section. Note that in my case the wagons don't load my rear wheels with any weight. When I add 5000+ lb to the bed it can haul all 3 wagons up that laneaway in 2wd low range so 4wd isn't used on pavement with weight on the bed.

the 350’s actually are rated to tow more in 99% of configurations
@JONNYGEEKMANG5 жыл бұрын
@@brendan747 the 450-550 has extra weight due to upgrades thus reduced rated tow capacity. You have access to better gear ratios for towing. It has larger brakes, larger axles, stiffer springs, higher payloads per config extra frame reinforcements, wide track front axle for more stability and better turning radius. Among other little tweaks. The truck might weigh a couple hundred lbs more. Steeping up up in gear ratio will more then compensate for that. He's already over rated limits so makes no difference. A 450 will pull more and stop more. It's safer overall for heavier loads regardless of ratings.
@brendan7475 жыл бұрын
SlowcarsInc i know the differences, i was just stating that legally, he is less over weight with his 350. he needs a 650+ for the weights he pulls
@JONNYGEEKMANG5 жыл бұрын
@@brendan747 even a 650 is not rated for what he tows. He honestly needs a class 8 truck for the weight he's towing. No class 3-7 truck that I know of is rated for a 45k trailer. Although the need for 4wd etc he'd def overall benifit from the haviest frame largest brake 4wd he can get which I think is typically a 650/6500 series truck. He'll be down on power but have an extra 3k of truck to tame the load and prolly twice the brakes. I know 4wd is available in all classes of trucks classes but the higher the class the more costly and less common it becomes. As well as practicality and maintenance etc. I do believe it's legal for him to tow the weight where he's from but I'm not sure on that.

Ford will tell you that's normal with big loads. And we gross 40 to 50 thousand pounds.
