I did enjoy the slow-mo fire ignition! That looked pretty cool. Gonna tell you this, though... You'll come back in one or more years to do a review, and it'll still look just as it does now. Weather you dry poor or wet mix this type of concrete, the chemicals are STILL going to do their job! Don't care what any concrete guy says... This is how it works, and will always work. It's designed to work this way. People are just mad because they know that other people will do the same thing instead of calling the concrete man, for simple slab work. Thank you for taking the time and risking the damage to your project. It turned-out great! Stay safe, take care!

I agree that over time a dry pour slab will be very close in strength to a wet pour. Concrete typically takes 28 days to reach full strength when wet poured, and 70-80% of its strength is reached within 48 hours. I think that dry pouring does two things. First I think it slows down the curing process. A suspect the 70% hardness threshold will be more like 3-7 days and it will be more variable depending on exactly how you did the dry pour, thickness, moisture level, temperature, etc. I also would not be surprised if the maximum level is increased as well (30-45 days). Secondly, I think on a large average the overall strength of the concrete will potentially be lower. I think we're probably talking anywhere from 70-100% of normal wet poured concrete. And I think this is because there is an opportunity for less settling and more voids to form in a concrete that is slowly activated. This may result in just less binding between the cement, sand, and aggregate. Now given these two things would the risk make sense to do this in a foundation wall, or a structural building member....No. I wouldn't want to rely on the potential margins for error in the process. However would I park my lawnmower on it, patch a garage floor/driveway, put patio furniture on it. Yes, totally. I think in almost all those cases the is no real need for 3000-4000 psi concrete anyway, so if its at 10% reduced strength it really has no risk with its intended use.

I did this dry pour method for a 9 foot by 4 foot sidewalk in front of my house so that my driver side tire front and rear are on it. That way I don’t step out into mud when it’s raining. I measured the exact amount of water for the amount cement so I would not use too much water. After 24 hours I hosed it down once a day for 2 days. It took 3 weeks to cure, a lot longer than the traditional method. It has never cracked. It seems to be as strong as the slab I poured for my shop using the traditional way of mix water and cement in a mixer.

Since you asked (1:35) why this isn't going to work, the reason is that you allowed the concrete to dry instead of cure. If concrete dries out before it cures, it will be weak, as you demonstrated. Note that it dries out faster near the edges, so that's why you see it crushing near the edge. Curing involves keeping the concrete moist as it sets. Keeping it wet for 24 hours would be a minimum, but you allowed it to dry (not cure) in just a few hours. Curing is a chemical process where the water causes the cement in the concrete to develop into larger and larger crystals which bind together. When it dries out before curing, the crystals remain small and unbound which allows them to slip (break). Ideally you would cure concrete projects underwater for a week. With outsized projects like slabs, typically you would cover with a cloth, soak the cloth, and then cover with plastic sealed at the edges to prevent evaporation. I really like the idea of dry pouring concrete for all the reasons you mentioned. The problem is working out the best way to wet it and keep it wet while it cures.

Good stuff! If you would cover the green but hard slab with burlap, straw, old rugs or carpet pads, anything that would stay wet, then keep that cover material wet for a week +-, to help achieve max concrete PSI. Concrete doesn't actually 'dry', it goes through a chemical reaction; even hard concrete is porous and will allow top down water saturation to help complete the cement/aggregate reaction process. More wet, more better:)

The concrete nerd in me just got awakened. Most people don't realize the main stress slabs on grade deal with come from the ground, not the load on top. As you mentioned, your grade material is non-expansive sand. The truck experiment is interesting, but if you do a quick calculation, assuming a 6"x6" footprint per tire, he had 4 tires on the slab, 2 front tires and 2 dualies, for a total of 144 square inches. If you divide the 14000 # by 144 sq in, you get 97 psi, not really much of a test. Most dirt can handle that load, as did your yard dirt. The main reason the edge cracked, other than what other have mentioned being lack of curing, was the concrete was put in a flexural (combination of tension and compression) load, instead of a strictly compressive load. Concrete is great in compression, not so much tension. This is really a great example of how concrete can perform even if it's abused (using that term strictly in an engineering context). You've done the sakrete industry a great service, and I appreciate your willingness to put the work in to see what kind of finished product you could achieve. Your cement, if properly hydrated (keep it damp) will continue to gain strength for years. The concrete in the Hoover/Boulder Dam is still gaining strength after 88 years, minuscule though the strength gain would be. Again, kudos and wear at least a dust mask the next time PLEASE
@jaxturner7288

6x6 is 36 per tire and 36x6 is 216 not 144. And the truck doesn’t weigh 14,000 pounds. A trucks GVWR and a trucks curb weight are two very different things. Regardless your quick math is definitely f’ed up. 👌
@kennethmeyer7113
@kennethmeyer7113 Жыл бұрын
@@jaxturner7288 the 14,000 pounds came from the video. I didn't make that up. I used 4 tires instead of 6 because it didn't look like his right rear tires made it on the slab. If they were all on the slab, that makes it less of a load per square inch, which was my point. The load of the truck isn't the main load the slab would normally have to deal with. Regardless, I thought this video was a great demonstration of how concrete has amazing load carrying capability, even if it wasn't placed in the "proper" way.

@@kennethmeyer7113 I dont think the calculations are worth doing because the psi load from a truck on concrete SHOULD be insignificant compared to it’s capabilities. As far as the trucks actual weight as it sits, that would be very hard to estimate from the video but one ton chassis cabs like that start with a curb weight (no bed, cargo or passengers) around 5-6,000 and then hafta add whatever his toolbox service bed weighs full of crap who knows without putting it on a scale, but I do know that they max out their total vehicle weight ratings around 12-14,000k, and it can’t be loaded up to its absolute max vehicle capacity without a trailer attached or the toolbox’s full of lead so he shouldn’t of used that number. Ultimately a dry lawn would support the truck so like I said this shouldn’t be considered a stress test to validate the durability of concrete because the psi load would be insignificant.

RCC (ROLLER COMPACTED CONCRETE) is More Dense / Particles are Closer Together Than Pourable Concrete Mix, because Water Stretches / puts more Distance between particles. So yes, Dry Poured Concrete CAN BE Stronger than Regular Poured Concrete Mix... But you have to get enough moisture through out the slab. You did good to put water on the ground before. I would have put more water at the mid point to be sure to have plenty of moisture. Great Job!

Someone who does papercrete would have wanted those empty cement bags, so that's better than burning them. Didn't look like you compacted the area under the pour from what I could tell on the video, that could also impact the strength of the pour. Cement doesn't need very much water to activate, the less you have, the better it will cure because there isn't the tendency for porosity/voids to weaken the setting when the water evaporates. Water does help the 'workability' of concrete. Ready Mix is very expensive compared to mixing your own cement with gravel, sand and buying portland cement sacks, but if you don't get the proportions right, you will have weaker areas. The other alternative is a 10% cement mix to soil for stabilized soil cement if you need a patio area and you aren't going to be driving on it. It too is a lot of work.

Sooooo.... it failed. Just to be clear. "It compressed like mud". That means it failed. With a correctly poured slab, 48hrs would have been enough time for it to reach a higher strength than dry placement. Just pour it the correct way and be worry free. It's also not as difficult as he complained. Please... Always read and follow all safety instructions and use all recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

I am a Carpenter of 30 years, working in Erosion control, Parks, Industrial and Utility. Can this work for none structural and small projects as you show, Yes. I have used this when doing Fence posts, or bollards some times, but you have to keep adding water till area stops absorbing in over about 5-10 mins. Would I do anything but post in this manner, No way. Reason being is many things: 1 - There is no way for all areas of the concrete to absorb enough water to get proper strength, by watering every 1-2 hours. Concrete if not wet enough is no good, too wet can create "efflorescence (that white crap leaching from concrete)" and may just flake apart. 2 - That light mist at start will create whats called a "Cold Joint" and every time you water it and it does absorb the water it creates another new Cold Joint. This will make easy fracture joins that will just pop off. 3 - Driving something heave across it may not do much or anything, if that first spray layer you did is about 1.5 - 2" thick and the base under it is stable enough. But near an edge even if you put a bull-nose on it, to reduce chipping, will chip off. The wood board you had on there protected the edges, It would of been worse with out them or soft soil there. 4 - More then likely If you pick up this slab, it will fall apart and most likely the center will just be powder, Unless it rained well enough to get around and under in the ground enough for it to absorb it from the soil. 5 - Anything done in this manner, will not survive anywhere that have great temperature fluctuations. Especially Cold areas that freeze, or has a frost layer, water will get into thoughts Cold Joints and freeze breaking the layers apart. Concrete will shrink and expand in warm and cold weather. If it fluctuates enough, and each of thoughts layers between the Cold Joints will expand and shrink at different rates, making them not Cold joints now but just floating layers. 6 - There is more things like possible "Segregation" I have seen in bags I wont get into. But I wont get into that and more and will just leave it here.

It was probably only less than 5% cured when you drove on the edge. Probably ended up creating cracks underneath that have not shown up yet. Save yourself a lot of money that slab probably would cost like $3000 plus to have a crew of guys pour and finish not to mention if you're in tight spot where you'd need to hire a pumper and then you have the washout to deal with. Depends on what you need it for I suppose. If you live down south where you don't get much freezing it might hold up pretty well. When I lay any kind of pipes underground I just throw a dry concrete sack on the the bend points for a kicker to keep it from moving. The moisture in the ground takes care of it. You could have a dump trailer load of Portland and aggregate dropped off and you could make your own blend so you don't need all those of individual sacks. You could layer on the top less rocks so you don't have any exposed agg. Another good alternative is just using recycled concrete road base, wet it, then plate tamp the crap out of it. It'll set up almost like a slab too. Even cheaper and easier.

Too soon. Concrete can take years to get full hardness. It compressed because it's still wet.

I saw a crack pop when the truck was still moving without the back wheels on the concrete. This seems more and more like just a project to vlog. Just wait a year or three and it will be evident this was a mistake.

Does anyone realize it looks like a 75 year old slab subjected to daily rain? How thick is this? It isn't finished or mixed right. People watch these videos and take them seriously. Also keep in mind that whatever is underneath the concrete, including its compaction, is as important as the quality of the pour.

I don't see what this was supposed to show or prove. Concrete is still green at a mere 48 hours. If you had a cement truck and a professional crew pour these slabs, it would still be stupid to drive a truck on it after only 48 hours. As a dry pour I wonder if it even had time to absorb enough water yet.

48 hours is not enough time for the concrete to reach its full strength. I assume those bags contained 4000 psi rated concrete mix. Had you kept the concrete moist for five full days, prior to driving on top of it, you likely would not have cracked it. I assume you read the instructions written on the bags and decided you did not care whether or not your dry pour cracked or not, if the video generated enough views.

Hi Paul, I'm going to do this under my new build home. Love this whole idea and I think the dry pour concrete comes out tougher and harder than a wet pour. For the 12ft by 8ft area, can you tell me how many bags and the depth of the pad? Oh, btw, loved the updated truck driving over it. Just a little bit of crumble on the edge but nothing in the middle. And only 48 hours curing.... Incredible.

Why would you think that it is tougher or harder? And if you can’t figure material needed for the area you are working with, you definitely shouldn’t be doing concrete foundation work, as it’s obviously your first go around working with concrete if you can’t estimate the material for yourself.

Hey Jax, thanks for your unhelpful and sanctimonious reply. I live in Australia and we use Metric. I was unsure of the depth Renetto used. Oh, for the record (as if I feel the necessity to tell you), I've built two homes and used concrete in many ways....driveways, foundations etc. So you just sit back and relax on that high horse of yours and never mind what I'm doing.
