No one's worried about money. People who never mix poured aren't going to just start dry pouring. They're still going to pay a guy for excavation, strong sub grade, and a nice finished surface. Sure someone might make some garden stones or yard ornaments thay take a couple bags, but no ones going to handle hundreds bags of concrete to do a patio or a couple thousand bags to do a driveway

@@Bennysol That's not exactly true. I've never mix-poured a bag of concrete in my life. But damn if I'm not thinking about dry-pouring some concrete steps for the front of my house. The contractor gave me a quote of $2,500 for a pair of steps about 4-feet wide. Hell no! Let me just do some more research on how to properly build the forms... and it's on!

The Romans used dry pour concrete when making piers and wharves. They'd fill a barge with dry mix, float it out to sea in the right place, and sink it. Seawater would hydrate it and so it's still there today.

Cement requires minimal water to begin the chemical reaction to form concrete. Once the chemical reaction starts, it cannot be stopped. Slowed, yes but not stoped. As the reaction peaks, additional water helps to cure the concrete. The longer concrete can be kept wet, the stronger the finish product. Concrete has approx 75% of its full strength in 7 days to approx 98% of its full strength in 28 days. In road construction, dry cement is being blended with base material and minimal water, it looks damp, and compacted. Proctors of this material can approach 100 with the right blend of cement, base and water. When doing this process, the prepared base needs to be wet. Flood it with water the night before placing the dry mix. The cement will draw the water up from the ground and the top misting will put water in on top. After you get a firm top, dont be afraid to mist it frequently. After 8 hours, keep the slab saturated. A sprinkler keeping the slab wet will make things easier. After 24 hours, keep the slab damp, especially on windy, hot and dry days for at least 7 days. If you can, 28 days curing will make the strongest concrete.

Definitely will consider dry pouring a patio in the future. Not sure if it will hold up to winter freeze thaw cycles since it appears more porous. But exactly right about only needs to be strong enough. Great video.

Safe to say that site prep is key regardless of how you pour and maybe for foot traffic such as patios or sidewalks ect dry pour is definitely a viable option.

Funny vid! When doing dry pour you might pour a little ‘M’ type mortar over the dry mix which is rated at 2500 psi. This is basically cement without the big 1/2” - 1” rocks which will make it easy to give a smooth final finish with your paint roller. 2500 psi is sufficient for sidewalks, sheds, or other light work. Wet concrete workers are basically bringing the cement to the top to get their smooth finish when the trowel, thus their surfaces also have a lower psi rating as the rocks in there concrete give the mixture foundation type psi ratings.

You should make some type of yard or house art with concrete. _A friend bought some reusable molds online of skulls & made a dozen or more decorating around his hot tub area._ (I'm sure there are a bazillion different molds to choose from and, some could even be made useful.) ~ Some big headlights you've got at 4:35, you must be drinking BudLight!? Being a concrete guy from the 80's the engineering aspect was the more water you add to the concrete mix the weaker it becomes. I am predicting that the dry pour will be stronger than the wet pour. By how much we just won't know until your next video when you drop an old cannon ball or shot put at different heights. Looking forward to the next video. Subscribed. Since you're in the drought area be sure to really water surface b4 adding 1st layer of concrete, bc you won't have any moisture for the concrete to wick up from the ground if you don't. You'll probably need to have extra water available for a faster watering cycle, as the air & ground will be leaching it away from the cement too. Some things about to think & plan for, maybe 🤔 Good luck...

@@JAYHARRIS85 There are 7 day crush tests and 30 day (strength) crush tests. When these were broken with a sledge hammer 24 hrs later and the centers just crumbled, well this may not be suitable for much more than a chicken coop. More testing would help determine if it may suitable for things more structural. Btw frozen concrete is bad as once it freezes it stops setting up. Hot water, calcium chloride should be added it the winter. Once finished insulated layers should be used to cover and keep concrete above freezing. Straw and a large tarp works well in Colorado springs area.

I've seen KZbin videos in which a pickup truck was driven onto a 3.5-inch dry pour slab, and nothing happened to the slab. Given the surface area of common vehicle tires and the weight of most passenger vehicles, including pickup trucks, the force created by such vehicles is going to be less than 200 psi. If the dry pour has been done properly, a dry pour slab will easily resist 200 psi. So, yes, for many applications, dry pour is more than good enough. However, would I recommend it for house foundations, garage slabs, driveways, or city sidewalks? No.

Actually, The less water you use in the mix, the stronger the mix will be.The strongest mix I have ever worked with was a 1 inch slump. That's like a clay consistency for airport runways.

KZbinr..."MAN about TOOLS" has a series of videos on how to make a concrete garden box. In the series he soaked the concrete segments for 30 days (completely submerged in water)... He claimed this maximizes the strength in the concrete segments to later be assembled. Since you seem to be taking a deep dive into dry pour...the next test you do, when you do it, be sure to submerge both (taken out of their forms) in water for 30 days before you test again. A suggestion for a future test... take a weed wacker to the surface of the cured concrete, one wet and one dry pour... after 30 days of soaking in water. MAN about TOOLS, perform this test because, raised garden beds are constantly being weed whacked by string trimmers, which is abrasive to concrete. This is a good test for dry pour.

They should be just had strong. Only if you had too much water to either one it will be weak. But the dry pour once you mist it enough times you can finish it with a mag trowel and create a smooth finish the cream rises to the top. Actually you should mag concrete to a finish regardless how you pour them.

I think dry pour could be even stronger. Mixing concrete with water can allow water and air molecules to be in the mix. Dry pouring should give you just enough water to trigger the chemical reaction that caused concreted to solidify.

It would be interesting if the concrete companies actually hired engineers to test the relative strength of standard wet pour and the dry pour method. When comparing wet pour and dry pour, I think the only real differences in the strength is 1) the possibility that the concrete didn't get wet enough when it was first exposed to water. And 2) you have the problem of possible air bubbles. And 3) possibly too much water in some parts of the concrete mix. Of course regular wet concrete has those potential problems, but hopefully it would be noticed and corrected while mixing and pouring. And the bubbles can be worked out by vibrating the forms. With dry pouring, it is much harder to see the problems or correct them.

On a larger pour, delivered is cheaper for the concrete. However, there is a skillset and a number of people required that must be accounted for. On a smaller project, it's simple and easy. Dry poru just makes sense.

The best way to test both of those would be to use a hydraulic press with a gauge. Dropping them from a ladder on to the grass is not an accurate test. The ground would absorb the impact.

typically u break concrete cylinders at 30 days 60 and 90 day breaks,they typically break at 100,000 psi on 90 days ,there is no rebar in cylinders ,im sure youll be ok pal... just incase you didnt know the older the concrete the stronger it gets because it is getting dryer and dryer. the Hoover dam is stronger now then it was 30 years ago and will be stronger 30 years from now.
