In this video I remove and recore the egr cooler on a f550 superduty 6.7 powerstroke
I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory.
I will pay my vows to the lord in the presence of all his people, in the courts of the house of the lord, in your midst, o Jerusalem. Praise the lord. (Psalm 116:18-19)

Nice job! I love working on Fords. The engineers give you plenty of room to work on things.

It’s the old 100 pounds of crap in a 50 pound bag. Once you get that first layer of crap off the top it’s manageable, but they could have giving up a few more inches and it would make it easier. A body lift might help

Great video. I just bought a 2013 f350. I do not have a code yet but am doing preventive maintenance. I am using the 2017 egr cooler core, has more flow. How many hours did this job take? Thanks.

This was a lot more involved than I thought it would be at first, but still not too bad. I was wondering if one of those overhead creepers would be useful on a job like this. I appreciate your mellow background music.

I’d like one of those topside creepers. Laying across the engine is getting old.

very informative video but i have some querries about the EGR bypass valve especially for Ford F550. i will be thankful if you can answer below 2 questions. Thanks 1.) Firstly, i would like to know the position and structure and shape of the EGR bypass valve how does it look like. 2.) Secondly, when the EGR bypass valve is closed, then the exhasut gas is bypassed directly in to the manifold. my question is when it is bypassed, then is it possible that some amount of the gas slips through the gaps around bypass valve or slips in the cooler? Or does the gas goes back?
@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not really sure the shape of the valve I didn’t reall look at it too much. I believe the exhaust gas runs into the egr valve then though the cooler and back through the valve into the intake. I think the valve just stops the flow of exhaust I don’t think it redirects it anywhere.

@@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic thank you very much for the reply. but kindly tell me is there another valve at the exit of EGR? because its not making any sense that the exhaust gas go back through the valve and then the intake. please brief me sir. Thanks. and how the valve stops the flow of exhaust?
@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
The exhaust comes up from the manifold in the middle of the engine into the egr cooler, then it runs down one side of the cooler to the back and loops around to the other side and runs towards the front of the cooler and into the intake. The egr valve is either on the in or out side of the cooler, I’m not sure which side. The cooler only taps into the exhaust manifold, it’s not inline with the exhaust

@@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic Yes, actually the EGR valve is located before the cooler and even before the bypass valve. The EGR valve is in the first block/piece of the 3 parts assembled together. But my main concern is with the Bypass valve which bypass it into the intake manifold without cooling it for some reason. I am Mechanical engineer doing the research on EGR coolers, but i am unable to understand the bypass flow. if you don't mind sir, will you mail me the me the photo of the bypass valve which is located in the second piece of the assembly. or do you have any photo or diagram of the inside of the EGR valve and bypass valve. It will be a great help in my research and project. With Best Regards Sir.

Here is the info from a manual summary I use. www.fordservicecontent.com/ford_content/catalog/motorcraft/DOBDSM1601.pdf look on page 74 to 76. EGR Cooler / EGR Cooler Bypass Monitor The functionality of the EGR cooler system, including the bypass valve and temperature sensor, is monitored by means of comparing measured EGR gas temperature downstream of the EGR cooler assembly with measured coolant temperature in the main coolant loop when certain engine operating conditions exist. The operating conditions in which this detection can occur are the monitor entry conditions. Following changes in engine operating conditions, there is a delay before the changes are reflected in the EGR system temperatures. Because of this delay the entry conditions include a number of timers which must complete before the monitor is released. When a condition feeding a timer is no longer met, the timer resets. EGR undercooling is detected using this EGR cooler monitor. The undercooling monitor can detect when EGR is not being cooled sufficiently, for example, when the EGR cooler bypass is stuck in the bypass position. The entry conditions for EGR undercooling monitoring must be met for monitoring to take place. Once the entry conditions are met and while they continue to be met, the measured EGR temperature downstream of the EGR cooler assembly is compared to a threshold which is determined based on measured coolant temperature. A typical value for this threshold is 70 deg C above engine coolant temperature. If the measured EGR temperature downstream of the EGR cooler assembly is greater than the threshold, for a predetermined amount of time, a fault is detected.For overcooling, EGR cooling system is monitored by intrusively moving the bypass door from the cooling position to the bypass position and looking at the response of the temperature out of the EGR cooler. The gradient (slope) of the temperature is compared to a threshold, if the gradient is less than the threshold for the entire monitoring duration, a fault is detected. In contrast, on a non-fault system, once the gradient exceeds the threshold, the monitor pass is latched. Once the monitor pass is latched, the bypass door returns to the cooling position to protect the engine hardware from overheating. The bypass door returns to the cooling position before the monitor is complete but the monitor continues to be released as long as the entry conditions are met. The monitor only completes once the monitor is released for the full monitoring duration, consecutively. Monitoring is done during somewhat steady state operation at medium to high speed-load conditions with sufficient EGR flow. Entry are selected so the monitor is released to run when the conditions are correct. The entry conditions required to release the monitor are listed EGR Cooler (Intrusive) Entry Conditions table below. The bypass door must be in the cooling position for a minimum calibrated time for the monitor to be released. The rest of the entry conditions must be met for a different minimum calibrated time before the monitor is released. To protect the hardware, the monitor is not allowed to re-release immediately if the release is lost because one of more of the entry condition are no longer met.

I think ford is trying to get it so the cab needs to come off for everything. Once you get all that stuff off the top though you can kinda see the engine in there.

I assume your asking how to put the coolant back in. I’ve vacuum filled the main cooling system before but I found it works fine just pouring it in the two degas bottles until it is to the full line. Then I’ll run the engine and keep topping off the coolant to the full line until the engine is warm. The big bottle on the drivers side is the primary cooling system for the engine and the small bottle to the front by the radiator is the secondary system for the egr cooler. I don’t think I have a video for it.

I had plans to work on the dually but got rained out. I hope your holiday was better than ours. Even a rainy day is a good day thanks to our veterans the fought for us and to those that didn’t come home.
