My buddy had a '78 Fairmont when we were in high school. It was already an old car by then as this was 1993. It had an 8-track player and the only 8-track he owned was the Styx album containing "Mr. Roboto", so we listened to that way too many times, lol. Thanks again for another trip down memory lane. Your car videos are such great nostalgia for us 80's and 90's kids.
@knowbodiesfull57683 жыл бұрын
Those 8-track tapes were extinct by the early 1990s; cassettes and compact discs were "in", and they were pretty much the dominant format, as the vinyl records had already disappeared as well. Now here we are in 2021, and who would've thought CDs have gone away as well?!
@100percentSNAFU3 жыл бұрын
@@knowbodiesfull5768 And now there is this big resurgence of cassette tapes by the gen Z crowd that never lived through the era. They love them. I still have almost all my old cassette tapes...if nothing else they were indestructible as long as you didn't get a deck that "ate" them!

My first new car. I ordered it the way I wanted it ( remember that? ) and it was silver exterior and black interior with the upgrade packages. It looked much like the one at (4:25 ) in your video. It cost me $4200. ( Manual 4 speed - 4 cyl. ) It taught me to never buy a first year model car again, as the other options I wanted were not available until the following year. I had that car 8 years and drove it 80,000 miles. I loved it.

The Fairmont/Zephyr name _was_ gone after 1983, but the cars themselves continued until 1986 (when the Taurus and Sable arrived, and eventually replaced them for '87) as the LTD (see 16:09) and Marquis. They were basically dressed-up Fairmonts and Zephyrs. And to avoid confusion, the big Fords and Mercs were renamed, respectively, LTD Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis.

The Fairmont/Zephyr is primitive now, but, in 1978, it was leaps and bounds above the car it replaced, the Ford Maverick/Mercury Comet. This car introduced the "Fox" platform which would go on the serve as the foundation for many other Ford Motor Company cars throughout the 1980s. (Most notably, the 1979-93 Mustang, and even the 1994-2004 Mustang used some body components from that '78 Fairmont. You couldn't tell, but they did.). All in all, the Fox platform lasted an incredible 26 years! (Only the Panther platform, basis for those darlings of the police/taxi/limousine services, the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Town Car, had a longer run - 32 years.)

How did ford come out with such a great platform, the fox body, and Chrysler came out with such a junky one, the k car, a few years later. I think ford’s tempo platform was also much better than the k car.

From a different perspective, wasn't this the rear view shot from Motorweek back in the day? Friend of mine had an almost completely stripped 2dr 78 Fairmont. Options: power steering, AM radio, vent windows. That was it. His Dad bought it for the Mom originally - the power steering and radio were concessions for her, never figured out who wanted the vent windows. Replaced a Pinto - yeah they spent on cars. Red, with red vinyl buckets - hot box. Still, as a utilitarian car it wasn't bad, though the rear end was twitchy over bumps and it slid in the wet. Agricultural four and if I remember correctly a lot of clutch slip - we shared a house after college and I drove it frequently. You couldn't kill it, though we may have tried ;)

The good ole Zephyr! I remember it very fondly. My mother had an '83 4-door Zephyr when I was just a little shit. It was red with white pint stripes. I was late for school many, MANY times when I was a little kid - IF the Zephyr even got us there at all! It usually died on the way or it just simply wouldn't start at all. But they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and my poor mother certainly got stronger - building up her muscles all the times she had to push that BASTARD of a car on the side of the road!! LOL. HOWEVER, the Zephyr my mum had was fitted with the inline straight 6 and in all fairness, she did put a hell of a lot of mileage on it before it started causing us problems. We went on many road trips in the '83 Mercury and traveled clear across the country with the Zephyr pulling a heavy load and we all got there in one piece! She had that car from 1985 to 1996 and overall it wasn't a bad car up until it's last couple of years and the body was rotted out and there was just one problem after another. Then in '96, she sold it to a mechanic (IRONIC??...) for like $75 and that's when she got the 1989 Pontiac 6000 station wagon!! Oh yes!! And little did we dream that THAT car would prove to be an even BIGGER shit show!!

Mine too. These cars were honest- they drove exactly like they look like they would. These were lighter and better handling (not great, but still better) than the competition, exactly like you would expect. Very sturdy too. Once I got to drive a medium blue one with no air, it was sharp and it had the 302 v8. It made the car. So effortlessly snappy in acceleration. Most of the other cars of the day were doggy , and here was this affordable fun car. Fun in a stealth way. This was about 1983. The fairmont was c. 1979. It felt 500-1000 lbs lighter than the equivalent sized/priced car from Chrysler or gm, while still being more durable.

My first car was a '78 Futura model. It may have been in an accident as the previous owner had replaced the driver's side front panel and upgraded the engine to a V-8. As a result I had a fast car. Problems: the muffler eventually fell off on I-75 in Detroit, and the fuel pump would occasionally give out, causing the car to slow down. Another Fairmont owner experienced the same fuel pump issue. I also had to push the accelerator to the floor, hold it a second, release, then I could start the car. But that was after it was about eight years old. Overall, I wasn't impressed, but cars of that era were not built to last like they are now. My Ford Edge is 12 years old now and I've had no issues with it.

My mother, who was used to the floor switch, couldn't figure out how to turn them off. She called the rental company. They had no idea either. So for 3 nights we're passing cars on the street, and mom's little tiny voice was saying 'sorry' to every one of them who were giving her the 1 finger salute. Finally my dad got sick of hearing about it, and took it to a local Ford dealer, where a young salesman showed him that you pulled back on the signal stalk. Dad gave him a $10.00 bill. Actually a very unremarkable car. Interior packaging & ergonomics were pretty good okay. Other than that: Meh!

These, like almost all American cars of the late 70s and early 80s, had all the flavor of a dirt sandwich... It amazes me how younger guys are actually taking the time and trouble to "restore" junk like this, but then again, OUR dads, uncles and grandfathers were probably scratching their heads, wondering WHY we'd want to put any time or money into something like a 1950 Ford, a 1960 Cadillac, or a '66 Chevelle. Sink yer money into what ya want to. But PLEASE... Never call these plasticoated garbage barges "Classics"... Which they are not, nor ever will be.

The Ford Fairmont/Granada was probably the ugliest line of cars Ford ever built. Especially that god-awful coupe.

Yeah that may be so, but by the end of this gorgeous video I was wanting one!

@@sooverit5529 Here's hoping you can score one. It'll be a conversation piece if nothing else...lol Kinda like the crappy ash tray I made in ceramics class when I was a kid.
