Lovely car. Rust has killed most now, but what a fabulous thing it was to drive. Fortunately successive Fiestas have managed to keep the magic. Sadly probably we won't see many more iterations due to the dual issues of being forced into badly packaged, expensive and oversized EVs, and the somewhat aligned market obsession with SUVs.

I’m from SA. Still running my ‘03 1.3L fiesta (Rocam spec). She’s barebones save for an air conditioner. No power steering, no airbags, no sunroof, no traction control or ABS. They’re surprisingly low to the ground in comparison to most other cars so cornering’s pretty decent. Their peppy engines help with overtaking without destroying your wallet. Sure there’s rust, but some have been on the road for over two decades so it’s understandable. They’re little gems.

In SA we got a lot more spec on our cars as base models like alloys and air con and bigger engines than in the UK but our cars up until about the mid 2000s had pretty much no standard safety equipment lol. So we’d get the 1.6 polo with aircon and power steering and alloys and CD player but it would have no airbags or abs whereas in the UK all the safety stuff was mandated.

The best Fiesta. Might not have been the fastest but they are just so brilliant to drive. A bit firm but it's not wasted, unlike on a lot of modern cars. My parents bought one for £400. Ran it for over 10 years, spent maybe £150 on it, and sold it fairly recently for more than they paid for it. It was even written off twice in its life and is still out there somewhere!

My sister had a 1996 1.3 endura engined encore from brand new and didn't change the oil in 100,000 miles of ownership. It sounded rattly by the end but man was it reliable. I had a 1.25 ghia auto for over a year and loved it! Of course I'm going back to the late 90s. Most of them are dust by now!

It was the same with my Mum's 1996 Corsa. It was barely ever serviced and but it never, ever once didn't start, unless of course she drained the battery which happened a number of times, or ran out of petrol which happened once a few yards from the driveway ironically. But mechanically it never let her/us down which we found quite amusing when we saw our neighbour's much newer Seat Ibiza being mended or towed a few times over the years. She got 17 years out of that car and it took us absolutely everywhere until rust eventually took it.

I worked at a Ford dealer who’d recently lost their franchise in 97. We’d bought a dozen or so of ex Jersey hire cars, all Fiesta Ghia s, the same as the one Clarkson is driving here. Took all the sales team, valeters, some admin staff a few miles across town to collect them and had an idea. I made sure every car had Classic FM on the radio and coming up towards the Cowgate and Grassmarket in Edinburgh, we all turned up full with windows down and started a gentle (and safe) synchronised light driving sway to the time of the music. Quite something to see the tourists and locals stare in disbelief. They were fantastic handling little things. Shame there was no camera phones back then

I really like the whole “don’t drive more than you need to” philosophy. I drive a GTI and live in the DC area. Save for buying a JCW Mini (which would be smaller but also more expensive and less luxurious) there really aren’t any better smaller cars out today. Personally I’m a bit embarrassed by the size of the cars we insist on driving here in the States. I’m glad I’m contributing to that at a lower level.

Had diesel one when I was young. I think it was the only car I ever had that got km's quite a lot every years and still it passed local MOT's for was it 5 or 6 years in row before getting was it one ball end worn too much. Other than that it was basic maintenance and brake pads/shoes. And as student back then it cost like ball end was it 25euro part or something like that. By far the cheapest and reliable car I've owned. Years later I got BMW and it got was it lower arms and few other bits needed to be replaced in MOT. I got into to part shop and they asked which side components and I said I think I'll change both sides at same time, even though I said before I need one side only. Seller looked at me said are you sure about that? It'll be was it 380 euros per side. I just laughed and said I'll actually take that left side after all if they're so expensive and mentioned I think I could've replaced every single suspension component in front end for Fiesta for about that one sides BMW parts price 😁 I actually liked that Fiesta. Absolutely nothing flashy, but heated windscreen was so nice in cold winters and the driving feel was better than many bigger cars I've driven from same era. Solid little car, well until the inevidable rust hits too badly :)

My honest opinion here. My grandpa had a 1.25 Ghia, my dad had a 1.8d van and i had a 1.3i Flair (base model). The Ghia was great but both the van and the Flair felt ancient compared to it. Both the van and the Ghia were scrapped around 2010 because of fatal amounts of rust. Mine is going next week because of the same problem, not as bad but with the other problems it has it's scrap. For today, a ghia would be fine but cheaper models feel ancient. Overall not bad cars these mk4 fezzes

The mk8 facelift (2022) is definitely the ugliest. Apart from the mk8 facelift there’s never really been an ugly fiesta (in my opinion).

Road noise, under tyred and rust.
@RustyRenesis
@RustyRenesis 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "under tyred"? Not enough tyre size for the car? Don't buy cheap chinese tyres then. Road noise is a bit higher than usual, but not anywhere near enough to stop conversations, and again with good tires that's not an issue. Rust, like with all cars, it's a lottery. You might've had bad luck with yours, but i can say for certain that mine is as good as it gets... i got lucky. All cars have problems, that's not gonna change. But having driven all the hatchbacks of the 1990's and 2000's, my MK4 Fiesta is for sure the most fun, the fastest and best out of all of them.

@@RustyRenesis They're the worst in class for rust, the Polo, Punto and Corsa were either partially or fully galvanized. Without the optional ABS the lower models are dangerously easy to lock up in the wet.

@@matthewking5612 I don't want to be that guy but, have you driven one? My MK4 is my daily and that's nothing but bullshit. About the Rust? Sure. But without ABS they're not that dangerous. On the contrary, they handle worlds better than their competitors.

@matthew King Let me tell you about my mate's 13 plate polo... it had to have a patch on the passenger side sill last year. And if you can't drive a car that hasn't got ABS without locking the wheels up you shouldn't be driving. New drivers should be taught on how to apply cadence braking.
@skylined5534
@skylined5534 2 жыл бұрын
@Robben P. I drove a mk4 recently for about a year and I will say the issue with these can be rust. Braking wise I don't think I ever locked up even in the wet and the car has bo ABS. It does have good tyres though! Handling wise they really are good even by 'modern' standards. I've no idea what 'under-tyred' means either! They're not even particularly noisy inside at speed.

When Top Gear was a proper motoring series aimed at "normal" everyday motorists, since 2002 it has become reality TV crap. But even back in 1995 they were still pushing this "cars are bad for the environment" crap.

Agreed. People lament the passing of Clarkson era rebooted TG but aside being a novelty for a season or two it soon got tiresome, predictable and desperately unfunny.
@Embracing01

@@skylined5534 I agree it was a novelty at first but novelties don't last long. As you say it got tiresome and unfunny. They said the reason they axed the original series was due to poor ratings, probably because by 1998 Clarkson had left which left the show without any funny humour, though Quentin Willson and Steve Berry were quite funny, but nowhere near hilarious as Clarkson; Clarkson was the one that kept it going throughout the 90s otherwise it probably would've finished well before then. But at the end of the time it was meant to be a motoring programme which it was until they axed it for the reboot in 2002.
