Thanks! Will be doing this in next couple of days. Looks so much easier than all the other Focus models, where the alternator is around the back. Thank you for showing me how to do it.

Great video, straight to the point, some people are making videos way to long and to complicated.

i totally agree, so many videos that are 10 longer than actually doing the job

Englisch Thank you so much Mark! That was the best explanation I've ever seen. I did it exactly like that. The alternator is in there. The battery indicator light finally turns off. 1000 thanks from Germany from the beautiful Lower Rhine. Greetings Jochen

In case anybody's wondering, you can actually do this even without jacking up the car and removing the belt cover. Granted, it takes a bit of effort, but you can actually get to the tensioner pulley from above. Taking the belt off the alternator and/or putting it back on is certainly easier if you have a second pair of hands available, but it can still be done even by a single person - I just did it yesterday (twice, actually) when I was replacing the MAP sensor (you have to remove the alternator to get to it, thanks Ford!). And my serpentine belt is a very tight fit - even with the tensioner pulled all the way it could go, I could still barely take it off the alternator. If it has as much slack as it seems to have in this video, it would've been much easier still. Removing the coolant tank and the power steering tank would also make it a bit easier, but to be honest, I didn't even bother. Not sure if actually replacing the belt would be possible this way - I'm thinking it might, but it could get somewhat awkward guiding the belt through some of the pulleys - but if all you're interested in is the alternator removal, then it can certainly be done. But very nice video overall, I really like your no-nonsense, straightforward style of instructions.

Still great advice in April 2024. I'm about to do this and, your advice along with OP's video has removed any fears I might have had. Thank you.

Thank you, this is an amazing instruction! I succeed in replacing an alternator. As mentioned in the other comment it's possible to pull a tensioner pulley from above. In fact it was very convenient, because it allowed me to block the spanner on something after pulling the pulley. Also it seems that bolts' sizes may differ in some cases so it's worth to prepare more spanners :) Anyways, the best instruction for amateurs ever!

This is a 1.6L UK spec, 1 generation. Probably built in Eastern Europe? Don't think they build this in the UK (but I could be wrong).

Just a recommendation to state " remove negative cable from BATTERY before alternator removal " to prevent arching of positive lead to chassis.
@mrsdoyle28273 жыл бұрын
Its not arching,its arcing.

I did this with a friend the other day after watching your video in order to get to the thermostat and it was relatively easy thank you. Only problem however is I must have upset the bearings in the idle pulley behind the alternator pulley as it's making a loud tapping noise :S At least that is a very simple thing to replace. Unfortunately looks like the water leak I thought was from the thermostat is actually coming from the gasket of the intake manifold. Gotta love cars :'D

Getting to the thermostat on this car is a nightmare. Only thing worse is the starter motor (located at the back of the engine)

Hello, I have the same model. Could you please let me know more about the part when you remove the belt cover under the car. Do we need to put the car on an elevator and how to proceed when we don't have this possibility to elevate the car? thanks for your advise.

Thanks a bunch for the video! I need to get to the MAP sensor so this video helps with taking out the alternator! :)

Every time I see the MAP sensor on this engine (and I've been looking at it quite a lot lately, since it seems that mine might have skewed readings and I might need to replace it), I wonder what the folks at Ford were thinking. I mean...you could hardly think of a more awkward place to put such an essential sensor, especially with the way you simply HAVE to take off the alternator to even just get at the screws, let alone get the sensor out. If only it was mounted from the top, not from the side...then you could perhaps get to it through that manifold gap.

my 1.6 zetec has no tensioner, it has a 1s4e-6c301 elastic belt. To get the belt on and off , lift FR wheel, put car in 5th gear , spin wheel and gently guide the belt off with a crowbar.

Hey Mark, great video! It actually helped a lot and it's impressive how you're breaking it down to 2 min. However, I've experienced one problem maybe you've got an idea what to do: All 3 screws are coming off but the bolt on which the alternator fixed apparently is rusted so much that the whole alternator is not even moving the slightest bit. I've tried using a hammer and a wedge at the gap in between the alternator and the frame where it's fixed but the cast iron is rather deforming than the alternator coming off.. Also WD40 doesn't help. Maybe you or someone else has got an idea what to do. Would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

My alternator from Ford Focus mk1 1.6 16v is gone, my frend giving me for free alternator from same model, same year but form 1.8 16v, so my question is, is it gonna fit well?
@markambrose778 жыл бұрын
Yeah, most from the 1.4L 1.6L, 1.8L and 2.0L are compatible. (assuming all MK1) I think there are some differences with the 1.8 Diesel ones. Please check is what I would advise.
