The owner of this lovely Mk3 called us after receiving news of a hole in his sump from another garage... He decided to move it to a specialist as the other Garage suggested the car needed a 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗮 £𝟭𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗲𝘅 𝗩𝗔𝗧! 🤯

My brother had a new block put in his MK3 RS... Oil pump had starved engine... Ford quoted him £14k for a new engine, warranty direct never paid a penny because Ford couldnt explain why the pump failed and no good will discount from Ford either... Job was then done at Devil Developments for £5500... Disgusted 😒

Mate i feel for your Brother, I also having a Cracking RS (excuse the pun) I had a ton of work done on my RS Engine forging the works In June 2020 by end of august id got a cracked engine bolck ??? Its now March 2021 and im still waiting to get my car back.

Just got me a 17 RS the end of Jan. Motor blew May 8 while going around 35-40 and I think I was about to switch to 4th, can't really remember. Warranty just got approved at the Ford dealership. Car has been down nearly longer than I've had it and it's stock besides an exhaust. Things like this wil break your heart.

I run a mazda mps 2.3 turbo "ford block" and they prity much do the same thing if you ask for boost low down in the rev range. The trick is to only drive hard them from 4k rpm and no boosting in 6th. The low down torque rips the rods apart. It olso makes sense that was going 25mph in 2nd?or even 3rd ? and floored it.

These issues are invariably caused by poor maintenance, and bad driving. Regular oil changes, using premium fuel, regular services, letting the car warm up properly, and you won’t have any issues.

Owned a mk1 Focus RS from new for 5/6 yrs and bar a failed charge cooler pump and wear and tear it never missed a beat even after 3yrs I tuned it too 300bhp and was happy motoring. Hope the guy gets what he deserves, not nice.

Maybe I’m not up to scratch? The Volvo Turbocharged 5 Cylinder 2.3 was as far as Volvo originally wanted to take this engine! The also had a 2.5 low pressure turbocharged unit as well, less stressed and reliable! I’ve owned plenty t5s in the past, Ford stole Volvos technology and stretched it too far as far as I’m concerned when they acquired them! Blocks and piston walls already stretched to the maximum Temp wise. Never had a blown 5 with several Volvos property serviced! Just my tuppence worth! Any thoughts?

How come the st doesn't have that problem. What about the Barra engine that's healthy and it's an ecoboost. Also the rs here in Australia isn't having issues. Some pre 2017 models really...Ford warranty sees it through unless the warranty is void due to mods

Unfortunately you tune these at your own risk. Ford themselves stated the engine was close to the limit from the factory. I sold mine and went with the Mk2 in the end, the trusty Volvo 5 pot is the better engine for sure. It’s a shame because the Mk3 is a great car in terms of driving feel, levels of grip - but ownership is just a constant worry.

No. My stage 2 rs its been modified for 3 years and abusing it , no issues, the problem is on some of the vehicles , the Hg recall was not properly done , also the sealant was an issue. So those vehicles with bad hg work and re sealant , are the ones that fail. Most ford mechanics were not ready for this job .

I won't be buying a Ford ever and that is after other peoples stories. I had a Corsa GSI back in the day. Engine needed a rebore showing signs of wear 3 x its mileage. Cost me £1.4k. When they gave it me back one of the pistons failed after the conrod then failed and the engine needed much more work doing to it. The garages involved believed the material used to have been cast incorrectly. Vauxhall did not want to know and lost the full history paperwork having asked to see it. I would never buy a Vauxhall again either.

Don't you find that these major blow ups occur on badly modified vehicles, the mk3 needs forged internals for any serious power increase. You generally find that tuners are just after your money, not many will refuse your custom if the customer wants to cheapskate it. Just look at the chavvy stripes, silly skirts, ridiculous mud flaps on this RS, at least it hasn't got a tragic body wrap on it, who in their right mind does this, save your money and get your car done right where it matters.

Hi guys. I have a Blue Edition. Is this an inherent problem? Is it an aftermarket warranty or Ford? If the engine is replaced with an identical one surely it could happen again. This sort of thing should be used to update the new replacement engines by Ford so it doesn’t happen again as a replacement.

Has this car been modified? Is the owner intending to return it to standard in order to have the work done. I have an extended warranty on my mk3.5 ST but I am am worried if any warranty work was required it would fail due to the bolt on mods and map. I can flash the map back to stock tho..

I brought a mk3 rs new in 2016 Mountune got it to 400hp without changing internals did 12k in 3 years with no problems now have a Yaris GR which is a better car 😊

Unfortunately RS as well as ST can't be trashed from low revs, which them both really encourage to. Add a tune with 500nm below 3k and kaboom is around the corner. I know RS case where it blew at 1800rpm on 6th gear. Crusie Control, 6th gear up the hill and job done!

@@BDPerformanceWrexham that has surprised me they usually wriggle like a bag of snakes. I had a condenser pop and the 'warranty' company wouldnt move from its 'corrosion' even though it had let go on the weld where dryer attached. Hence told them to foxtrot oscar and cancelled dd. It was an extension of dealer supplied warranty, wont be fooled again. Thankfully that all that has failed in the ten years ive now had the car. All that said pleased for the owner they paid. Hope hes enjoying his car again.

Is it me or does ford use inferior metal for all of their blocks. From the GT350 to the GT500 to the rs. Ford are junk always have been always will be. I've been running 40 pounds of boost in my turbo 4 for over 10 years and a 100 trips down the drag strip. Ford can't even seem to keep the motor together under its stock power. Why try to reinvent the wheel when evos and wrx's have been proven way better than the Ford.

I think the thickness of the wall on the RS is different to the ST which is why people tend to swap. There’s been plenty of cracks near head bolts documented, not just internals ending outside!

Right, here is my view on this . Firstly , I think there is going to be a lot of dead focus in a few years with dead engines , and I think this is why the second hand price of these is dropping very quickly . Second ,, I don't believe for one minute, ford fitted the wrong head gasket on early cars , and the recall with a different head gasket was more of a attempt to get them out of the warranty period . this car looking at the 16 plate should of had the recall done . Thirdly . If you look at the block at the rear . It's about as thin as a piece of paper in places .

The price of thses is holding very well. Show me a low mileage one for less than £20k with good history and I will snap your hand off. Mine has been faultless for 4 years running 375bhp including trackdays amf 'Ring trips.

Not good but obvious a bearing bolt has snapped and caused mayhem! the Bolts are one of the weakest parts when on full boost! o dear I do hope you are succesfull with Warranty but I just dont see it! you just know there will be a get out clause somewhere!

The bearing bolts are still fully intact in this case. The piston has split in two from the gudgeon pin and the rod is in two pieces, so it’s difficult to assess which failed first.
