In today's video, courtesy of fellow KZbinr @SamAustin I revisit the Mk3 Ford Focus RS. A car that was surrounded by some controversy when launched, but is now gaining traction as a "future classic" thanks to the fact it is almost certain to be the last ever Focus RS.
Time then to see if it's still as mediocre as I remember!

Here in the States, the Focus RS was met with a lot of enthusiasm. Have seen 2 examples in the last 2-3 days and they do stick out. A real shame Ford is killing the Fiesta and Focus in Europe- both gone for 3-4 years here in the U.S. As a person who likes cars, the future of EV SUV's is pathetic.

Sounds like that short-shifter kit should go - the standard box is perfectly lovely as it is. And my big advice to every RS owner is put the Michelin Alpin PA4 tires on. Really settles the car nicely - just a much much better daily driver then and solves a lot of the problems James noted.

Hi Sam, I have a mk3 rs with mountune upgrades, running around 380 bhp. I have to say i don't recognise much of what this review had to say. Mine handles wonderfully. If your steering is as bad as he said (which i doubt very much)you really should get it looked at. FJRS in Braintree Essex i'm sure could sort it. Did not think much of this review to be honest, full of inaccuracies and prejudice against Ford and RS. I'm sure you let him review your car in good faith and was not expecting all the crap he came out with

Well my Focus RS is seven years old and 55,000 kms. Came through the head gasket recall needing no work done. Transfer box replaced under warranty. No other problems great car, makes me smile every time I push it through undulating fast corners. And remember what CAR magazine said in their 2016 Giant Sports Car Test "Through wet corners the RS can show the supercars a thing or two" (Mclaren BMW etc etc)

Agreed. It’s this stupid “worthiness” mentality of all car manufacturers. They bring out a product that appeals to everyone, and when you show interest in that product your treated with contempt, unless of course you are willing to buy it immediately or put a deposit down. But even then, the customer is treated poorly on purpose, as if it to say, our products are so superior, so in demand, so technically advanced, you are a lucky mortal to even be allowed to be in the building. You low life, mortal you

I think it would have failed no matter what. People who do want these probably couldn't afford it at base price to begin with. However maybe the profit margins are significantly bigger to help justify it. People who have like 40k or whatever this was worth are buying a premium brand or a crossover. Not a dolled up economy car. Most of the time. Anyway another thing would have been Ford killing off the focus completely. 100k sales a year is apparently not profitable. And Cafe regulations make small cars hard to justify from my understanding.
@jameswillard1

Might have had something to do with the fact that most people didn’t see the value in a $40k Ford Focus. Most of the cars in the US were the loaded Forged Wheel/RS2 Pack cars. I disagree that the markups were responsible for this car not doing well because those were very short lived and not long after the big markups came BIG DISCOUNTS! My local Ford dealership had a loaded black RS for $32,800 brand new and it still sat

The problem with not being offered a test drive was alive and well here in the UK too. I went to Gates Ford Stevenage, I was around 30 at the time and turned up in a mk7 Fiesta ST, in the most expensive paint colour, OZ wheels and lots of Mountune attached to it. So about the same money spent as was being asked for the new Focus RS. But when I went in and showed an interest and asked for a test drive (a logical upgrade for my car no?), I was told to put my phone number on a business card and they’ll give me a call. Never got the call.

I went into Stevenage Ford and asked to test drive this as well, I turned up in an AMG and they wouldn't let me test drive one without putting a deposit down on it... Years later I turned up to another Ford dealer in a Maserati looking for a cheaper fun car to replace it, they wouldn't let me test drive a Fiesta ST because it was raining 😅

Never even after asking again. They just really didn't wanne sell me one. I bought that Mk7 in that dealership. Now i own a Mk8 fiesta ST st3 silver fox 5 door. With how much i like the Mk8 over my Mk7, i didn't botter about a focus RS for 1 second anymore. Mk7 is a very nice car and a very good design but the 3 cilinder got me with the powerband and the sound. also the last Fiesta ST EVER. i will own this car for a very long time. Love it.

As always a Dealership is only as good as the people who work there. Back in 2018 I went into the Ford dealership in Lincoln to ask about lead times and placing an order on an RS. The guy I spoke to said he was too busy to talk at that time as he had to move some cars. I said no problem can I speak to the sales manager and he replied “I am the sales manager”. Shame as I thought they were great cars, still that guy did me a favour as I sold my M2 and bought a Giulia Quadrifoglio shortly afterwards.

I have to agree that the mk2 is not only the best looking of all the rs generations, but probably the best looking hatch of all time IMO. It's so different from any other ford in terms of aggressive styling and that exotic engine (at least exotic for a hot hatch). It's like Ford really put it's best people to work on designing the mk2, almost like they got a great deal of input from Ford's rally division or something. We never got this generation in the States. I commented on another video about the mk2 that the other thing that is ashame is that the mk2 is the last RS in a 3 door body. I hate how all the hatches today are 5 door and no longer available as a 3 door, even as an option. Yes, yes, 5 doors are more practical, but hot hatches look miles better as 3 doors. The mk2 looks properly good with its rally-inspired styling, especially those fender flares. Just looks menacing from any angle. And that volvo 5 banger. What a brilliant choice to go with that sexy shape. Ford really nailed the mk2. They were on a role back then. The mk3 is probably the more competent RS with the awd, but the mk2 seems to still be able to hustle on a track, and I think I still would rather have the mk2 as a package, especially with those looks and engine. It did have cool engineering like that trick Revo knuckle to eliminate torque steer which was interesting and unique. When I see nurburgring videos, I see more mk2's than mk3's on track, so i guess that says something. Unfortunately, the mk2 will not be legal to import to the US until 2034, with our ridiculous and pointless 25-year import rule. At least it's only 15 years in Canada. I do like the MK1 as well, even with its own flaws like the torque steer. We can import those in 2027. The mk1 was special in its own way with alot of exclusive parts and it was limited in production, making it feel like a homologation special. Looks sexy too with unique styling as it was enhancing an already-great design.

I think part of why the car seems that bit less refined is because it has been modified. With the torque steer, for example, this doesn't happen on the standard car. At least with some decent tires on it. The way you describe the gearbox also seems completely contradictory to what others have said about the standard car. And as far as I can tell, everyone has raved about how well it handles. It may have been more fair to the car if you had driven a stock version.

I agree. I’ve had mine since new in 2016, modified to 430hp now (no LSD though), and lowered, updated brakes, quick shift, and no issues with torque steer and no issue with how the quick shift works, or how sharply she turns in. Possible the car James was driving wasn’t set up particularly well. Yes the tide is choppy and hard, yes it’s not got the finish that VW has, but it also hasn’t got the depreciation that VW or similar have. James is entitled to ‘not like’ the car or ‘not get it’ and so be it. As for the kind of person who buys or bought one, I’ve not come from any Fiesta - never had one. I have a 2018 Edition out here in Spain where the roads are so much smoother, and have some pretty amazing roads to choose from, some just a short drive from home. The car works amazingly well out here, very rare you get the veering steering or tramlining. Car mods are banned here without pricey homoligation fees so the car is stock other than the lowered seat subframes and a K&N. Not a single thing has gone wrong it from new, and service costs are €240 so very cheap. I have been looking to sell it recently as im moving, but literally have no idea what to have next.

I still own a MK3 RS edition which I've had from new since 2018, and I totally disagree with the comments about torque steer and cornering in this car, having had 2 focus st's prior to this, they both had hideous torque steer particularly the 2015 and earlier one, which they would have being front wheel drive Vs this car, but the steering is light yet responsive and it literally will go round corners at speeds it just shouldn't every single time.

What you said regarding the change of stiffness between Sport and Normal is not true. Please notate that you can also change the suspension of the car in very Stiff mode (=race) fromr the other mode (Normal, Sport, drift) with a lever on the left behind the steering wheel. This car win a lot of prices in the car magazine (2*car of the year for Echappement, Evo so far I rememberd,...) . To clarify what the problem was with the original engines: The engine assembly contractor used the incorrect head gasket - from the Mustang spec version of this engine. The Focus RS version has a slightly different head and block, with extra coolant passages. The Mustang gasket blocks some of these passages, but eventually causes the water to push its way into the cylinder. The standard suspension is way too jiggly for me. I wonder if it was developed by German engineers, who seem to like this sort of thing in their cars. Richard Parry-Jones was very much missed here. There is (or at least was) an adaptive suspension system available for about a grand, which makes it a whole lot more comfortable and loses none of the roadholding. That would be where my money went, not in the short-shift kit and 1990s era Max Power parpy crackly exhaust.

These didn't quite catch on here in Canada as the price difference vs a Golf R was enormous. At one point you could get a manual MK7 R for $41,995 vs $59,999 for the Focus. For ~$2-4k more you could get into an Audi RS3 or non-competiton BMW M2, so you'd have to be completely out of your mind to pay that for a Focus.

I genuinely have no clue where you're coming from with regards torque steer. I've owned a mk3 for nearly 5 years (albeit the non Editon version) and have not experienced even a hint of it. Maybe the quaiffe? I dunno. There is the issue where the car will very rarely pull slightly if you give it the beans on a heavily cambered road however. Oh, and nothing changes to the suspension between normal and sport drive modes. It's hard in either. 🤣

Ahh the MK3 Focus RS. I had one of these cars for a short amount of time from brand new after previously owning multiple MK2 RSs. Thankfully mine came after they realised the issues with the head gasket - so it didn't need that dreaded recall. I remember the head gasket issue ruining the car for people who got theirs early, they usually suffered from oil leaks afterward which generally put a dampener on ownership. They aren't quick cars as standard and they sound terrible, but they look great (In my opinion) and the Recaro buckets are some of the best seats you will find in any car, unfortunately mounted a touch to high for anybody over 6 foot tall who wants a sporty driving position. The aftermarket fixed this with a seat lowering kit - but it was an oversight by Ford. It used to tramline when driving hard in a straight line, but I do think they might have fixed this with software updates over the years. It was a weird car.. I remember being underwhelmed with it at the time, but I do think it has aged well and I did consider buying another a few years back.

I test drove one back in the day and it had some big problems , starting with the coolant consumption because of the defect in the head gasket of the engine the first years of production. Then it was the torque and power curves. The car was fast but with so flat torque and power curves it had ZERO drama and sensations. My friends Impreza STI with 330 hp, thats 20 less hp than the focus felt like it had 100 hp more cause of the oldschool power curve of the engine and my actual Evo 7 with around the same power of the focus feels a rocketship in comparison. Otherwise its a good car but Im not very fond of the Haldex type AWD either cause I prefer true AWD or RWD specially in a 1600Kg car.

Preordered and owned one for 3 years and a couple of month. It was very quick once the pretty much essential Mountune MP375 kit was added but fell out of love with it really as never really felt special as kept seeing them everywhere and it didnt look that much different to a regular mk3 Focus / ST, plus the recall shenanigans and long term ownership worries out of warranty. Mine went back to Ford 3 times to have the gasket and cylinder head replaced, then back a further two times to remedy oil leaks as a result of the head gasket not replaced properly. The seats wore horribly on the bolsters in less than 3 years and 10k miles, and also the light switch surround randomly broke and the loose change flap / OBD cover. I swapped mine for a GR Yaris as absolutely have no regrets as on the road up to UK legal speed limits there is practically nothing in it in terms of pace plus a 10 year warranty compared for 3 for the Ford that I felt like was genuinely was going to start falling to bits shortly after that ran out. The RS does make a nice noise though.

I own a 2018 in the US. The head gasket issue was the Mustang gasket fitted until they changed them over to the RS gasket. 2018s shipped to the US, had roofs that were gloss black painted. The US never got the door guards. I don't experience any weird torque steer or steering issues. Maybe a problem with that car. Where do you go next? - Either sell and buy an RS3 or A45S or keep it and upgrade it more. Or keep it for the Manual AWD fun and utility that it is and buy a RWD S6, V8 or 911 or Cayman platform for the next level. Or, an older GT-R or M2/3/4 or B58 Supra....So many options and keep the RS. Point is, you don't have to go anywhere.

It's an astounding car in my humble opinion. Nothing puts a smile on your face like an ST or an RS. Problem is Jay, you've reviewed one that's been modded. So what you have said might apply to that particular car but not to the general model itself. For example, your gripe about the gears could be due to the type of short shift or how it's been fitted. But watch many other reviewers drive a stock RS and they will praise the slick gear movement. Maybe to get a true impression you should have reviewed a stock version. I have experience in driving the Golf R and the Focus RS and while of course the Golf is much nicer inside, I'd take the RS every time due to it's handling, performance and of course.. fun

Looking at the roads you tested the car on it may not have been torque steer you were experiencing. The car does have a noticeable problem with PDC over compensating (or veering steering) on B road type surfaces. A lot of owners are having this turned off and it does make a difference. A stock car may have been a little easier to assess than someone else’s modified car.

I had one of the first cars and took it to a Mountune dealer where their head tech went out with me and proclaimed the PDC dangerous. I subsequently managed to have it supposedly turned off, but I think Ford lied as - the problem was still there; marginally less intrusive - in so far as the steering tug was reduced - but all the clueless calling it torque steer appear blissfully unaware that the car has nowhere near enough torque to do that at 70mph+ 😂😂😂

I love my RS - it's such a superb all-rounder. My number 1 recommendation to everybody is to fit the Michelin Alpine PA4 tires. As well as providing amazing grip in all weathers (I have had it in the summer desert heat, and the snow), they soften up the ride and calm down the jitters very nicely, and they also last a lot longer than the summer ones. The Michelins will not stand up to track abuse though - I tried them for a laugh, and they go gooey after about 5 laps - especially the way I drive. But that's OK because probably the AWD clutches won't last much longer than that anyway. There's certainly better track cars out there (e.g. my Caterham!). I don't get any torque-steer (literally none), or the hesitancy on turn-in that you were describing, and mine is factory-stock - so I wonder if somebody's "played" with your particular one. Don't do that :-) The turning circle is rubbish. The base Focus' turning circle isn't good, and then they stuck wider tires on, and then of course they can't turn as far - parking it is a faff. The fuel tank also wasn't enlarged from the standard Focus, so the range is pathetic (300 miles? 250 more like) - again, especially the way I drive. Aside from those quibbles, it's still a fantastic all-round road car. It just loves to be driven - it eggs you on! And Ford are total idiots for abandoning this market.

Some reviewers are obviously not Ford fans and want to put it across to as bigger audience as possible with not a care in the world. However this review in particular is definitely food for thought, even for some those mk 3 RS drivers who've always had thoughts and possibly even doubts about a car which could have been given further potential, although I can see that Ford could have played it too safe as an end result and may have stopped short. Interesting. The Focus RS Edition did however seem to improve the ride quality over older "standard" models in 2018. Saying that, the edition is not that different from the standard/stock model, but almost feels the same, yet even safer with that clever differential. Considering the car has great power, amazingly you somehow can't feel the full potential and drama which is very strange. I would say that Focus RS Mk 3 has likely been given a 'too safe' feeling by Ford, which does create mixed feelings. However, it doesn't have a soft set up, it's very fast timewise and everything is hard, right through from the hard suspension, to the high seats which all by around 4cm compared to competing hatchbacks. It's interesting because almost everything is not quite perfect about the car and this is emphasised when comparing it against less technologically advanced machines. Yet it manages to fill the criteria across the board but somehow lacks natural fluidity and character compared to older cars.

I also think that Sam should have sorted some of the issues that the car clearly has (bin those tyres and sort out the dubious short shift) before offering it up for a drive. Perhaps a standard / FPM375 version would have made a better test?

I feel privileged to have lived thru the 1980’s and 1990’s where as a teenager one could aspire to own a “hot hatch” with a realistic prospect such as Ford XR2/3 Golf GTi and Peugeot 205Gti’s as well as these weird things called “sports cars” such as Toyota MR2, Mazda MX5, MG-F right thru to the hairy chested TVR’s and Porsche 924/944/968, Lotus Excel etc. TBH the only later day hero’s on the market at reasonable price points are MX5 still and GR Yaris and these Fiesta ST/RS. No wonder youngsters are loosing interest in cars…. 🤷🏻‍♂️ The fact that the VW Up!, GTI version has sold out shows people still want “inexpensive” performance orientated cars and manufacturers are missing a big sales opportunity by leaving this segment. Renault Sport version of Clio has been “go-to” model for 25 years but even they have lost interest 😔

Here in the US I think more and more young people loath cars. You can't survive here without. No alternatives. Seem a huge movement of people online promoting alternatives to cars. Young people now are holding back getting a license. Cars are all completely unaffordable. The average new sale is 48k. All those sports cars you said were not ever very popular or desirable I think here. Only a few sporty cars are actually desirable to the point folks go for it. Most want the big three row crossover or truck.

The focus RS in America was Introduced to great fanfare along with dealers taking deposits and signing orders for way above msrp. Then they arrived and immediately began to have problems. Incorrect head gaskets caused long repair delays and gearbox and transmission leaks were pretty bad and frequent. I don't think I have ever seen any performance car that went from thousand$$$ over keep to lemon law buyback sitting on the trade in lot in such a short period of time! I feel like I dodged a bullet by staying away from it.

I was one of the first recipients of this back in 2016. I still love it and will never sell but I’ve had issues. The clutch went in the first 9 months (luckily covered by warranty) and more recently the head gasket - £2500 later and all is good. I love the car but don’t have confidence in its longevity.
