I've been having issues with my 04 Monterey for 6 months. I've had so many different parts replace costing hundreds of dollars and yesterday while driving home it started freaking out on me so I pulled over and could hear a whistling noise. The hose to the pcv had sucked in just like you showed. This whole time I've been chasing the problem and its was the pcv valve. I'm at 206,000 miles on my van. She has never once left me stranded.

This was my exact issue in the exact same spot. Can't get the hose today, so I did my best electricians tape tight wrap. It idled near perfect immediately. Just disconnected battery and will reconnect in a bit then do the idle 10-15min run. Thank you so much for the insight!

Thank you so much for your video. Everything you just explained with the leak in the air hose was what was happening to my van. I have a 2004 Ford Freestar and it was killing out when at a stop or just idling. I took it to Autozone and the guy ran his computer on it. He told me I would need to replace both of my O2 sensors and that they'd be $50 each. When I asked about the printout (because I didn't understand it), he got super defensive. I'm no mechanic, just a computer guy trying to save a little money so I couldn't really question the guy. But I could hear a leak under my hood and sure enough, it was that air hose. I went and got some electrical tape and fixed it instantly! Thanks for the video and God bless you!

This is a very common thing. A lot of places automatically jump to replacing the O2 sensors. Remember that what you have here is a system where everything is interconnected. A problem in one place can cause an abnormal reading somewhere else. Your O2 sensors probably were putting out bad readings, but the cause was the air leak and not the sensors themselves.

I just replaced the ignition coil pack, as the housing was cracked. However, I failed to reset the PCM (didn't know any better). So, it was throwing codes for running lean almost immediately. This video taught me the importance of resetting the PCM via unhooking the negative to the battery. Everything is perfect now. Thanks a lot!

The Focus issue was not this... I'm a tuned to this type of failure. When I get it back on the road shortly I will see if I can duplicate it. If you do pull a Focus 2007 model PCV I would be interested. Thanks again for all the information you provide with your videos. After pulling the drivers side strut I did find the rear A frame bushing with the creaking noise shown in another video. Never heard it inside, Down the road I will replace those A frames.

Hey there. I've got the Monterey like the one here. I just did plugs/wires/egr/coil pack. It was running awesome and all of the sudden it just ran like garbage just like this video. It was throwing like 12 different codes all of the sudden. Was not crank or cam sensors. I saw this video and noticed that my pcv hose looks different. Mine is all plastic with a foam wrap with quick connects on each end. I can't hear any vacuums leaks and when I place my finger on the hole in the intake manifold after I quick take off the pcv hose, it still has the rolling idle. Any thoughts?

Yes and the focus and explorers on certain years escort etc . The only thing I can think of was it wasn't as large of a hole when they looked at it.

I have a 2003 F150 4.2…..I did ALL of that ….EGR, and HEATED PCP VALVE replacement. My truck idles normal, then low, occasionally, and A LOT when the A/C is on. I’m thinking IAC……. ??????

Thank you for this video! You said in the video that you would list the part number in the description but I don't see it. I think I'm having the same problem. I get the same codes. There isn't an obvious hole in the hose but the hose is caved in at that location and looks like is has a bunch of small cracks in it.

My 04 Freestar got a new PCM, was wet and under warranty. That was causing so many issues. Now, it runs good, high irratic idle sometimes and as soon as I give it gas in drive it chugs and dies out Any Ideas?

I have a 04 Freestar and I am getting the 0174 code. I have reduced power especially when the air is on. There is also a smell of gas/exhaust that is noticeable when the air is on. Any ideas?

I'm amazed how the other "tech" didn't hear the hissing or even see that gaping hole in the vacuum line. It's crazy that there are "professionals" out there that just guess and waste customers' money by throwing EGR valves at the car.

Yep and that was one expensive guess. I have another one on a Taurus they guessed at everything, then bring it to the dealer and I found compression issues. That video is in the works and will be a huge series on the 3.0l Vulcan engine.

I have the p0171 code i checked vacuum hoses i checked the throttle body no leaks brake booster no leaks i recently changed the pcv hose but i didnt change the pcv valve im leaning towards the pcv valve has the culprit

Hi a quick update: the lean code problem I have on the monterey was fixed, it pass the smog check in 5 minutes and its been running fine without issues on the engine. A few days ago I notice the driver side high beam is not working, I check the bulb its not burn, but I change the bulb anyway, still no high beam on the driver side, passenger side works fine. I put the passenger side bulb to the driver side, no high beam so the problem is not the bulb. I check the fuse, not burn either. its clear I have some kind of electrical problem the cause only the driver side high beam not light up but I am not sure where else to check, do you have any suggestion where the problem may be? Mine was the fuel rail pressure sensor changed it 115 dollars runs great now but the check engine light would not go off so went to Auto store and used their scanner to reset it. And there's your dinner!

I kept extra hoses for that problem. Every long trip 1000k I would have to replace it. Short trips daily commutes ok, but long trips up north down south, anything around 1000k I had to replace it

Work was done on my 2004 freestar. All sensors were replaced and now the transmission is messed up. Wont come out of first gear. Reverse works fine. Is it possible it has something to do with the computer because they were messing around with it,

well my 2006 ford freestar has problem runing lean bank 2. it sudenly happen, there is no leakage anywhere, all plugs and wires are new, intake seal is new also, ignition coil, fuel injectors also been replaced but its still same, 3 cylinder are missing fire and it smell alot gas. engion shake alot and dies on low rpm. but it still start and run. 2 mechanics gave up on her.. any suggestions...m

First replace the EGRSM or egr valve, second replace the fuel rail pressure sensor. Then disconnect battery for 10 minutes drive and reevaluate for the lean codes.

There will always be a slight hiss noise as the air rushes through the intake I know what you are talking about. Are there and check engine lights on? Does the hesitation feel like a misfire.

FordTechMakuloco yes..no check engine lights yet... i "cigar" smoke tested it and some smoke came from the EGR valve... Also i hear some hissing (air coming out) at the EGR when blowing the smoke into it...is that common?.. is there any quick way to check if the EGR valve is the culprit..i

Smoke out of the egr is normal it is one of the many calibrated vac leaks on the car. If you think the egr is the culprit just unplug the egr valve and drive it will stay closed and never stick open, try that and go from there.

I have a 2004 ford freestar that I just bought from a guy and the check engine light is on and I got 7 codes .. they are as follows P1450, P2195, P0410, P 0171, P2004, P2006, P0193, now the van does not run bad but I have noticed when I am driving down the road doing about 55mph that is sometimes acts up for a split second and almost like skips gears and just acts funny for a split second...... I know most of the codes will affect me registering the van and that is an issue

Yes same thing there is a large pcv tube like 2 feet long in the shape of an L right on top of the engine follow it back you will see and hear the vac leak right away.

I know which hose your talking about now the issue is, is that where that hose connects to the air intake assembly is broken and was cobbled together with some kind of epoxy. So is there any sealants or glue you could reccomend to get me through until I acquire a new air assembly?

You have a freestar with intake seals leaking? Or is it a windstar?

FordTechMakuloco Monterey like the one in your video, intake seals leak that was repaired, no more vacuum leak at this point, DTC was cleared and a week later DTC came back 171 and 174 same lean code again.

The only other common leak points are the ones mentioned in the video. Some have reported the lower intake seal leak on these too but we never see them. Have you cleaned the MAF as shown in my other video?

FordTechMakuloco Yes, that was the first thing I did, and this one was replaced two years ago when I actually got a code for a faulty MAF. The lower intake was check out also by the shop when they were fixing the upper intake and it was not leaking.

Well then there is definitely a vacuum leak then as that is the conditions for this code to set. It can come from any vacuum line that is connected to the manifold including the brake booster. The way you have to do it is to cap off each one and watch the fuel trims with the scan tool. Fuel quality can affect trims also.

That code is for reduced catalytic converter efficiency on bank 1. Unfortunately one of the two catalytic converters on your vehicle is probably defective.
