Oh man, the very first car I bought was the same car featured here, a 1964 Ford Galaxy Convertible in that Peacock color. I was 19 and bought it used in 1967 in immaculate condition. The only difference was it had no air conditioner. Family and friends loved riding and driving it. On very sunny days the color was more aqua-green, on cloudy days it was aqua-blue. lol I loved that car. Unfortunately I had to leave it behind when I went into the service and when I got back 2 years later it had been stolen, wrecked, and found abandoned at a junkyard. Since it was parked on our property and only started now and then while I was gone I could not afford insurance so there was that. Nice car, I still miss it.

When I was a young boy, our next door neighbors had a turquoise and white 1959 Skyliner as their family car. I absolutely loved that car. I was given a lot of rides in it. One time, the father allowed me to push the roof retract button.

My Mom picked up a low mileage '64 500 XL 2dr, true hardtop (pillar less), black with red interior and white headliner, 352 4bl. The T-Bird buckets are what sold her on the car as she had some back issues. This was the one Ford that drew many nice complements from Chevy and Dodge-Plymouth fans. As Dennis said, it's probably the best looking XL made, and I think, THE best looking Ford made! My Dad bought a '68 XL hardtop sloped rear roof with hide away headlights, gold with a black interior. That XL had a 390 2bl. and the heavy duty (Police Duty) C6 trans. It had what I called a reverse stirrup shift handle in the floor console and allowed you to either let it run full auto, or hold first and second as long as you can. It was called a Select-Shift. I could get a good chirp from the rear tires doing a 1st - 2nd shift at about 60 mph! Dad sold that car 10 years later with 100,000 miles on it, and nothing ever went wrong in those 10 years - including the A/C, which would form frost on the metal outlets in the dash! It worked fine and was never serviced in 10 years! The '64 looked the coolest and I had high hopes of inheriting it when my Mom died. Didn't happen as my Brother in Law borrowed it from my Dad and totaled it in the rain on Long Island. No, I never really forgave him for that.

Fortunately, I was the proud owner of a fully restored 64 Galaxie 500 XL, 2 door hardtop. With a total rebuild of the original 390 V/8 and the factory FMX automatic transmission, the Galaxy would perform very nicely. My opinion; keep the original exhaust along with the short tail pipes hidden from view. This rag top looks 'very nice' but reinstall the factory rocker covers. Chrome rocker covers were an option and look nice on this engine. 'Super Torque Galaxies', we all love them! One of Fords nicest looking models.

have a 58 Skyliner, which was my fathers. He had taken out the motor and placed it inside his 500 Galaxie, which he was sadly killed in a car accident (1986), which I as 13 years of age and the car of course was gone too. I have the Skyliner in my garage after all these years and have plans to try and restore it. It has a lot of work that needs to be done. One day I will complete my dads dream and fix it. Also his 1968 500 XL was just returned back to me, that had been given to my Uncle Dennis, RIP, and was given back to us by my cousin. So now I have two care to hope to complete and see them running. just two beautiful car.

When I was a kid my Dad was a mechanic at a Ford dealership. When a Skyliner would come in for power top issues he was one of three mechanics that was trained on repairing them. He told me years later that the top was a great idea but was troublesome and required a lot of maintenance. Most of the time when the relays and limit switches would start to burnout the owners would keep pressing or holding down the retract switch which would then cause the electric motors to overheat and blow fuses. Then the cars would have to be towed to the shop with the tops stuck half way in the up or down position. But he said they were beautiful cars except the running joke about the car was that it looked like Ford tried to repurpose parts from the Edsel lineup as the taillights looked like an Edsel. 😄

Windshield leaks are a real pain, as often the only way to stop them is to remove the windshield, fix the pinch weld if it is rusty, and re-install the glass with a new rubber channel. You can't re-use the old one. It will leak even worse than it did before.

It mimicked the pressed-in details of the Thunderbird, while the trim that they did use on the Fairlane 500 looked wrong for the car, and at rear 3/4 shots, makes the car look like it has been in a wreck and poorly repaired.

I like all the Galaxie models from 1959 to 1965, especially the 500XL convertibles. It was interesting how Ford made the Galaxie to be as fancy as the deluxe models of Mercury, Pontiac, and Dodge, but they also competed with the Impala and Sport Fury. As a teenager at the time it was neat to see these big cars with bucket seats and center consoles. I think the interior colors other than black have a more interesting look than all black interiors. Nice video Dennis and thanks to Rick.

I never had either of these, but my closest would have been a 1963 Fairlane. Black with gray, 170 L6, 3 speed column shift, no A/C, 13"wheels, big round taillights, rubber floor mat, solid one color vinyl seats. Obviously nothing fancy or desirable about it, but still a pretty nice car for what it was. I think, especially for being a kid at the time, I did a good job of keeping up on it. I didn't keep detailed records or anything like that, but I kept up on the constant maintenance and I kept it clean and straight. One of several cars that I've had over the years that I could just shoot myself for letting go of. But, when I had them, they weren't antiques or classics. The were just old worn out saggy ass cars. They were nowhere even remotely close to the vicinity of being in the neighborhood of collectors. Except the Fairlane, which was decent. They were just tired, but if I'd only known then...

The 1964 Galaxie was the last year of the model that started in 1960. Back then cars were seriously facelifted every year so it's hard to tell. And the frame and maybe more dated back to 1957. The next year 1965 Fords were totally new with a completely different frame and suspension and body.

I bought my first car in 1964 when I was 19, it was a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 4 door sedan with a 3 speed standard shift, and a 332 cubic inch engine with a four barrel Holley carb that had 265 horsepower. (which they did not mention in the video.) I eventually blew the engine drag racing but It wasn't a breakneck speed wagon to begin with but I mopped up on 312's, 292's and chevy's 265's and some 283's. I then replaced the 332, after blowing it up with a 352 cu inch remanufactured engine with 300 hp. I was able to beat the new '64/'65' Ford 352's that had only 250 horses, I never told anyone what I had done with the replacement engine and had to raise the hood after some street drag races to prove it was a stock 332 engine (hee hee). But never could get around those damn 327 Chevy's.
@jamesbosworth4191
@jamesbosworth4191 Ай бұрын
Yup, they did indeed detune the 352. The 352 was supposed to be 2 barrel only in 61 and 62, but examples with the 300 horse 4 barrel version have been found, and yes, you can run away from the stock 63 and later ones. I guess they didn't like having people ask why the 390 didn't have more horses than the 352!

I'm going to offer a few corrections here: I believe there were 3 V8 choices that year..the original 'Thunderbird' 292, then the 332, and then the 352 4bbl. They kept the 292 I believe until 1960 or so as a base V8. I grew up with a 59 Galaxie that had the 332. Very reliable engine, but in the shadow of the 352. The 312 V8 was the high output option over the 292 thru the 57 year and I think the 332 replaced it, along with the 352 that made its debut in the 58 square bird. With regard to the A/C...the 64's was NOT dealer installed...it was a factory selectaire unit. Though t-birds had AC integrated into the dash, Ford on their Galaxies didn't do that until 1965. One exception, if my mind isn't playing tricks on me: I remember being in neighbor's 1956 Ford wagon that had a selectaire integrated unit where the vents were placed where the big radio speaker would have been. Starting in 1957, Ford hung the units below the dash through 1964.

Your memory is correct. In 54, Ford started offering the NOVI system as an option for Fords and Mercurys, not sure what system the Lincoln used starting 53. That system was mounted in the trunk. Then for 55, Fords and Mercs did indeed have the system inside the dash, just like the 54 Pontiac and the 54 Nash, but for 57, hung it under the dash just like Dealer air.

@@bruceparker9353 The 361 wasn't a MEL, it is just FE. It was a larger bore version of the 352. In Ford trucks starting sometime in the 60s, it came back but was called a 360. There was both a 410 MEL and later an FE 410.

Ok, I've owned 4 1958 Fords. 2 were Y blocks, 1 was a 352, one was a 361.

The first car I bought with my own money was a 64 Galaxie TuDor hardtop. The paint was a special order coral color that was used on Mercury's and Thunderbird's. I have been shopping for one just like it. 58's are pretty rare. They rusted terribly as did the 57's.

I loved the Fords from about 54 - 64. When the 65 Ford came out, it seemed like something was missing. Never could figure out what, but it just isn't the same.

The Skyliner wasn't that oddly proportioned when you look at some of the retractable hardtops that came out in the 2000s like the VW Eos, the Peugeot 206 cc and the Opel Tigra Twintop.

At around 4:57 we can see the temp gauge and it is around the 3/4 mark (the 64 convertible). They seem to just be rolling not too fast, I wonder if that was a typical range for this engine and radiator combo when it was new.

What fantastic Fords, both of them. I know a lot of people don't like the 58 Ford, but I think it would have been pretty nice if the Fairlane had the same side trim as the Custom 300. That side trim complemented the lines of the car. The side trim that is on there conflicts with the lines. Note how the fin bounds upward right where the side trim sweeps DOWNward. A conflict if you ask me.

My favorite 64 Galaxie is the 500XL 4dr hardtop / rather rare. Yes, you could get it with bucket seats and a floor shift. Over at Chrysler the did the same thing with some of the 300 Sport series 4dt ht. On the Ford, the kink in the back window really makes it - at Merc you could do the same thing with a Park Lane Marauder. Every now and then I've seen one advertised - and once the Ford with a floor mounted 4 speed.

My mother had a black 64 xl 4 door. I rode in it almost daily till it quit running in 75. The interior was odd looking to me then but now is classic. I miss the old cars interiors. Way more personality compared to today.

What could've, what should have, what wasn't meant to be. My grandmother died when I was five years old and my uncles sold my mother's 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL (which was parked in my grandmother's garage) from under me. Even as a little boy I fell in love with that car, but my uncle's took it away from me.

In the early 1960s when I was in college, our dorm administrator had a Skyliner. The retractable hardtop feature was way cool, but a mechanical pain in the ass. He couldn't find anyone who could make it work properly, particularly when he was putting up the top. It tended to misalign and not engage the screw in latches between the top and the windscreen. t drove him nuts to have to climb out and physically horse around with it whenever he put up the top, which in Seattle was often.

Kind of hilarious that it took about 40 years from the 1958 Ford in this video to the 1998ish Mercedes SLK to repeat that same idea of a folding metal roof convertible.
