Hi, Paul! Another great Q&A video! I am 6'5" and the '31 Slant Windshield Town Sedan is the most comfortable for me. The seat is mounted on tracks and is not altered for greater leg room, it is the seat latch. The latch is screwed to the floor with 4 screws. You remove those screws and move the latch and seat back about 4 inches and re-install it with 2 screws. The other 2 screws just get placed back in the empty holes. Now the front seat is back ~4 inches and is still adjustable. This is not possible with standard TS. The S/W Town Sedan is a big, roomy car. On other body styles you can get or make front seat spring sets that are thinner than stock. No one will notice that the cushions are a bit thinner and that moves you back from the steering wheel and firewall and down an inch or two. This really helps in cars with fixed seats, like roadsters and 4-door phaetons. I don't think anything will help a truck; they are just tight! Most of the advantage of any alternator over the generator is that the alternator has a voltage regulator built into it. As you know, this prevents water boiling out of the battery and the battery is always fully charged because when you need the power, the VR has the alternator put it out. So if you just add an electronic voltage regulator to your 6 volt generator, which is fairly easy to do, you get those advantages. The EVR is inside the generator, so it all looks stock. Plenty of power for LEDs. Works great, looks great. Then you can have your overdrive! The guys who make Sta-Bil have a formula that puts a protective coating out on all surfaces inside the fuel tank to stop corrosion on all surfaces (even above the fuel line, up in the air). It is really good for a car that you know will not be driven for a while. It's called Sta-Bil 360. Kind of pricey for everyday use in a driver, but a good additive before storing car away for the winter up north or for a car that is not driven often. Aftermarket A/C by Ken Davis (DFW area) hangs the condenser up under the car behind the rear axle at an angle. It has a fan to blow over the condenser and running down the road the air blows over it. No condenser in front of the radiator. Requires conversion to 12 volts neg. ground and an alternator. Takes up knee room under the gas tank. Enjoy your videos, please keep them coming! Hello Paul. I purchased my first Model A Roadster 1931 about 2 months ago. My dad had a 1930 coupe when I was a kid ( I’m now 67 ). I watch your videos with huge interest. You provide an unbelievable amount of service to those of us who want to continue our love for stock A Models. The other day, someone asked you about a radio for a 1930 model A. I asked my dad the same question when I was 17. He said he would show me the radio soon. I asked a week later and got the same answer. Well in a few day I told dad, I’ve looked all over this car and can’t find the radio. He turned to his work bench and handed me a church hymnal. Paul..Thanks for answering my question on generator vs alternator & 6/12 volt choice. I will go 6 volt alternator on my ‘30 coupe and switch out bulbs to LED’s and replace wiring at same time. Hi Paul. One of the first public service aspects of ham radio was helping with stolen cars. Car thievery was on the rise in the early to mid 1920's and the hams of the day would send reports to other towns for the police. These were in early 1920's QST's.

How to keep a Model A from being stolen (started)? Easy. Get the accessory fuse block that mounts on the starter and take the fuse out when parking the car. Also great protection in case you have a current draw somewhere that can drain the battery (i.e. stuck brake lights, dome light, etc).

@@ModelA I even went one better: I replaced the fuse with a 10amp circuit breaker. #1: easier to install and remove and #2: if it blows, it resets itself - no need to go find another fuse.

When using the dry wash it works better to spray the cloth when working around the hood louvers. If you spray the louvers the spray goes through and makes a mess on the engine and other places under the hood.

Glad to hear you not wanting anyone to tow an A that is stuck. I have an engine that had a tappet tower broken off. I fixed it by having it welded with a machined carbon rod inserted while it was tig welded.

@@ModelA Here’s one tip. The grease gun that you use for zerk fittings can be loosened up. When you loosen them up, they can fit on the fitting better, than you can tighten them up. Hey Paul, Sounds like I've missed the Q&A opportunity. I do have a question maybe another time. I have a Model A kit. Motor, trans, rear rebuilt many years ago. For a long time it was a go-cart with a lawn chair bolted to the chassis and it started and driven around the block a few times a year. Unfortunately that practice ended and as you described in this Q&A session the clutch/pressure plate seems to be all fused. Clutch peddle cannot be depressed. I'm assuming pull the rear end and torque tub out then work forward from there. Others suggest more creative skechy ideas. Your thoughts?

Hi Mike. I would pull the rear end and work forward. Some might pull the motor, but I like the ability to run the motor and switch through the gears without the rear end installed to double check my work

Thanks for your helpful videos. I am caretaker of my employer's 1930 A. The water pump shaft seems to have a substantial amount of end play. How much is too much? I worry a little about the impeller coming loose and the fan going through the radiator.

Water pumps do have a little bit of end play as normal. Maybe 1/4 inch. The fan belt should keep it kinda stationary. If the end play becomes excessive, then either the end of the shaft is worn or the part of the head casting that keeps the water pump shaft forward is worn. The new water pumps with the no-grease seals seem to keep themselves in position very well. I've only messed with one of them though, so your experience may vary.

Thank you Paul for all you do. 1930 Model A coupe has 43,000 miles showing, owned since 1963. I'm planning to install new shocks, front and rear. I found they are pricey. It seems to me it needs them and once replaced, I am expecting a much quiter,less rattle, and smoother ride. Any suggestions or knowing what to look for that would indicate the shocks need to be replaced. Trying to avoid a disappointment by replacing the shocks and not noticing much difference. I don't like the way modern tube shocks makes a Model A ride. But with the stock shocks, I can usually tell if the shocks need attention by the way the steering reacts to bumps. Stock shocks are rebuildable and last a LONG time!

I drive a moped it's called a Chinese rocket baby Softail manufactured in 2003 it has a fuel cut off you stick the key in and turn the ignition on you have to choke it and you have to do about the same thing you would have to do for a Model A to get it started and sometimes I drive in the winter it doesn't like to start below 40 degrees Fahrenheit but I know how to get it started so you know I like you you're funny keep it up keep up the good work your friend Dwight

How did model A's have heat or defrost in the winter? I haven't noticed in any of your videos that I've seen yet a heater system mentioned. Secondly, I saw your video discussing gas tank location differences between the Model T and the Model A. Also, I think you mentioned in a video the Model A having about twice the power. Are these two points the deciding factors without question of buying a Model A versus Model T when living in and planning to drive the Appalachians? Lastly, am I correct and understanding from your videos that as I am a big and tall guy that I want to buy a 30 or 31 Tudor for one or two people and a dog

How about a video of how the "A" grease gun from the tool bag works? The cork piston in mine is smaller than the bore, and it slides freely on the plunger/handle. I have a modern one w/ a adapter, but dang if I can figure this oldie out.

In your video from a year ago when you were doing routine maintenance on your daily driver, you mentioned lubing the car every 500 miles and as I recall oil change about every 2,000. Though it did not look difficult, is the model A a high maintenance vehicle or as a purist and saving the 100-year-old cars are you performing routine maintenance in such short intervals to keep them from wearing out? I currently have a 27-year-old Ford while I'm budgeting for a daily driver Model A. Is the model a more frequent and always something maintenance? (By the way I really like that in one of your videos you mentioned for a person to never go in debt for a Model A and I think I recall you saying that borrower is slave to the lender. Excellent advice. I read that book too)

Paul I have a 1931 Model A coupe and are hearing a ratcheting sound from the motor. I used a stethoscope to isolate the sound, found it is coming from the distributor. Also if I advance the timing more than 4 notches it will quit, what is the problem I may be having?

Love your videos, they are very informative! I have a 30 CCP and the spark control & throttle rods and arms are worn so bad there’s very little timing advance or retard at the distributor end. I love these q&a's, I'm reasonably young compared to the rest of the model community (I'm 30 and Australian) I have my grandfather's un restored 30 town sedan, he built a slightly warmed up b engine for it ( in the 90s when I was little)but not long after he got it running it suffered severe cracking and he lost hope with the car, I am in the process of rebuilding an engine for 8 it but I would like your opinion from where I should start, I have a b (with counterbalanced crank from a 34 truck) and I have an a engine that has usable bearings (both are within specs to use stock bore) the thing i am worried about is the likelihood of b engines cracking, the last engine the car had was a b, the reason I pulled it apart was because it had 12 cracks in the block, i want to build the b I have but am I being too afraid of cracks , so long story short should I rebuid the good a engine or the good b engine I have for my town sedan that I want to put alot of mile on?

The B blocks are well known for developing cracks for no good reason. But once in a while, you come across someone who has had excellent luck with a B block. I have a B motor that was sleeved back to standard and it's rock solid. You just roll the dice with a B block. On the other hand, these days, you can buy a brand new A block with 5 mains for about the coat of a rebuild. That might be the best bet in your case. Call Snyder's and ask about the Burtz locks.

I saw you start a Model A with a crank. Also, in another video you mentioned lite prepping and EMP "proof". So, can a Model A start and run completely without a battery? To what extent is the EMP proof and such? Can it start by popping the clutch like a newer manual transmission too?

Well, yes. But why? More like running WITH a battery. Batteries are EMP proof. The battery will survive just fine. Yes you can pop the clutch.

@@michaeledwards8051 Thanks Michael! Not ALL electrical things die from EMP. Tube-type radios, for example, will survive and play just fine, assuming you have a power source. The filament series string radios (like the AA5's) will run fine on 10 (ten qty.) 9-volt batteries in series.

She loses electrical power and will not restart until the ignition switch is depressed. Folks say it’s the switch. How easy would it be to bypass it?

@@danielsimons376 Replace the switch with one of the reproduction pop-out look-alikes and replace the cable with the look-alike cable the parts sellers sell. People do it all the time. Very simple.

Enjoy your channel so much Paul! Maybe you have some tricks to make sure the felt seals on the crankshaft end don’t leak. Jared, over on his KZbin channel JNH Classics brought back to life a 1923 Model T and he’s driving it. Turns out it’s leaking some oil there. Do you have any pointers to give him? He rebuilt everything with new parts and is contemplating on pulling the engine to fix this.

Paul, What is the best method for arcing the brake shoes? I never see anything on arcing. I guess most arcing guys are dead due to the asbestos

Since Model A brake shoes don't have asbestos, at least it wasn't your fault! I take mine to the local brake shop. They still do it.

THEFT PROTECTION: I don't have a Ford Model A, but the previous owner of my 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe installed a relay to the starter motor under the back seat, activated by a button covered by carpeting. I doubt if any potential thief could find it. When I was away from the car for several months I even forgot about it myself! The secret switch for starter or ignition is probably the best theft protection.

I knew a guy who had it fixed up that his car would not start if the radio was off. the switch keeps them from hot wiring them but doesn't keep them from being towed. On the good side a Toyota camry is worth a lot more pieced out, the parts are easier to sell, and the prison time is the same if you get caught so your toyota is more likely to get stolen.

Paul, I saw a model A with a air cleaner on the carb. It was one of those that was pointed down and to the rear. My question is; won't this filter get wet if it rains? Also, is there any blockage using an air cleaner on a model A?

First question- Yes, but not bad. Second question- It can if using the wrong filter element or it gets dirty. But it starts running rich and that tells you it's time to change it or clean it.

Hi Paul I am look at a RHD model A it has chrome spokes with nipples on I know they are not factory fit but are they troublesome. Also there is no air filter fitted is this original? Thanks for sharing 👍👍

Chrome spokes don't seem to cause any trouble. Model As did not come with an air filter from the factory. However, air filters were a period available accessory. Good luck my friend!

When you sell one of your Model As (salivating over the red coupe) how do you go about it? My wife and I hope to move from Georgia back to the west coast whenever my doctor says it’s reasonably safe for one with a compromised immune system to fly. By then the red one will be gone, but I’d appreciate knowing how to be alert to later opportunities. It would be great to acquire one from someone who actually knows what he’s doing.

When we sell one, in the past we have offered them to our club members first (it's the right thing to do), then put them up on MAFCA classifieds, then as a last resort, the facebook thing. Going forward, we will likely do club members first then just do a video.

Antique cars run in family and it help to have had a bodyshop also in the family. My uncle had a gift of making a poem right off the top of his head. He made one for me about the model T, but change a few words and it works for model A. I hope you enjoy it. "I hope someday you'll never say this Ford has got you bored. I tried to pass, I gave it the gas. I even had it floored. As all the big cars pass me by, there engines big and strong. I look with pity at my car, could there be something wrong? I checked the wires. I checked the plugs, the carburetor too. I even checked the mag. you know, my hands were black and blue. But than one day while plugging away, it occurred to me. With all that work you simple jurk. It's just a model T.

I’ve had friends w classic cars have parts stolen off their cars AT CAR SHOWS!!!! A friend looked for years for an ashtray for years for one of his cars and the first car show he went to it was stolen! My worry is someone stealing the Buick Goddess Radiator Cap off of our 1927 Buick!!! Paul any ideas of how to secure the gas cap? Was thinking a chain attached to the underside of the cap w jb weld and then on the other end of the chain put n upside down “ribbon shaped” piece of thicker wire so you’d push the ribbon shaped wire and chain down into the radiator neck and then the wire will expand when it gets past the neck…. Someone could still just yank the thing apart and take the cap but maybe it will draw attention to them, we do like to go walk around the car shows too and have to leave the car unattended at times! Any ideas to help w this would be appreciated! Also Paul, can you make a video on the process on putting the resistor into the generator cut out??? Pretty please??? Btw I’m going to look at a ‘29 Model A truck this afternoon, it’s kinda rough but we will see if we can make a deal and bring her home!

@@ModelA well to say the Model A pickup was rough would be an understatement! Not that it wouldn’t be fun to disassemble the entire truck, do a little sanding and paint but it was painted I believe w a household roller! Which believe it would not doesn’t really bother me, I want the mechanics to be sound but I want the body, while I want it straight, to have the look that it’s worn and be around since 1930! It was sporting a metal roof,again painted w a roller, and was missing the rubberized material and trim. Is the trim readily avail Paul? I wouldn’t care if it had to be a reproduction trim, after all this would be a truck that’s going to sit outside and driven nearly every single day. I text the owner as the truck is sitting at a garden center but didn’t get a reply so my plan is to call him today. To be it’s a $2500-3000 truck IF it runs and drives as it should. My coworker did see it previously sitting at a local repair shop and again is now sitting at a garden center w a flower display in it. I’ll be happy to send you some pictures if you’d like to look at it and tell me what you think,again IF it’s a $2500-3000 truck! It was missing bits here and there, wrong headlights w modern halogens in the baskets also missing the metal conduit that should go from the headlights to the body w wires just hanging exposed and loose. Again little bits all over that need attention.

Lock up= ethanol gasoline in carbureted engines a lot (vapor lock). As far a I know a few Shell stations in Mo. do not have ethanol but ethanol is in every station in America as far as I know. Mandated by EPA. Absolute nasty gas.
