My father and I bought a 1930 coupe in 1970 and we have restored it and we drive it a lot on the street. We have never hand cranked the car until today after watching your video. However we had to tighten the nut on the front motor mount all the way tight before the crank pulley aligned with the crank handle guide. Car started great! However the engine harshness and vibration is terrible so we loosened the nut back to fully out and the vibrations are gone but we cannot hand crank anymore.😔
@ModelAКүн бұрын
That's great! And not great. But, that tells me that either (or both) your rear motor mounts are sagging or the frame is bent.

Hi Paul, This is the second time I've watched your video. I like you're explanation of the necessity for a multi-weight - I know that it gets pretty cold up where you live. My old Ford manuals say 20 wt in the winter, and 40 wt in the summer. Of course, here in San Diego we don't have much of a seasonal change. I'm thinking a 20w40 might work better for my location. One last thing - I noticed that your front tire-tread seemed to be wearing on the outside, I think that you may have a little too much toe-in? Of course that helps a lot with road grooves taking over your steering as the wheels seem to have a mind of their own sometimes no matter how tight the suspension and how well the steering box is adjusted. Ok, this is too long... LoL... take care... Joel from San Diego...
@ModelAКүн бұрын
Thanks Joel. 20-40 might be a tad too thick for your area. The thinner oil travels down to the main bearings better than thick oil (they are gravity fed), so unless your engine is pressurized, stick with a 30 wt. on the high end, like a 10W-30. Those tires looked like that when I installed them. I didn't have the cash for new ones. It has new tires now though.

If I wanted a Model A with air conditioning i'd invest in a Shay. With barely 40HP as is the compressor and alternator with grab at least ten of them.
@ModelAКүн бұрын
You'd be surprised how well a high torque Model A engine can adapt to AC loads. I know a lot of people running AC and it doesn't seem to affect much. Swap to a 5.5 head and it totally cancels out the AC load.

Paul, I like and appreciate the knowledge you show and share with the ones of us who like Model A Fords. What I take exception with you is your statement that you are "making Model A's cool again. Old buddy, you are just one of several that are making Model A's cool again.
@ModelAКүн бұрын
Taking exception with such a positive statement? Let's dive into this a little, if I may. Start off with this: Yes, it is a team effort. Yet, it did have to start somewhere. Some years ago, every club meeting I attended, the talk was about "How do we get new people into the hobby?" Everyone had ideas, but nobody had action. I thought the way to reach new people is with video and this platform. There were a few people making KZbin videos, but none were dedicated solely to the Model A from a new person's standpoint. And, let's be honest, some were all about the presenter, not the Model A. I decided to make videos about the cars and show why they are cool in their original form, no drastic modifications necessary, and I didn't make it about me. No ego, no pretense, just about the Model A and why it is the best classic or old car there is for new people. I have no ego, I'm just a regular guy, so it's easy to put the car and the viewer first and reach people more effectively that the "Look at me" style that was already on KZbin. It is working. The proof is in the numbers and feedback. The guy on video using a crescent wrench and common tools everyone has laying around to keep a Model A on the road is easier to relate to than the guy using Snap On and specialty tools so he looks the part on video. I actually WANT people to judge me and think, "I'm better than that guy (Paul Shinn), and if he can do it, then I bet I can do it better!" So, can I say that this KZbin channel is making Model A cool again? Heck, when it comes down to it, I can say any dang thing I want- It's my channel. But the fact is, this KZbin channel isn't about me, it's about the cars and the viewers. I'm just a servant to God and to my fellow humans. And all together, that is making Model As cool again.

Fantastic interview Paul, next year I’ll be in Miami and will be great to meet him. Very informative and convincing interview. Model A here in Curacao, really is a very much liked vehicle, and people really are impressed to learn how these prewar models were designed and operating till the day of today and beyond. Model A is an icon of the automotive world. Thanks Paul. Regards to Mrs. Tina.

I have quite a few 1920s Cars and have got a lot of them back on the road, the one thing I pray for is that they will keep making the parts for them! I am having issues getting the parts I need at present, like 2 blade fans and other parts!
