You might be forgiven for ignoring the Mk4 Ford Mondeo, but it was produced during a golden era of good-to-drive Fords - all thanks to a man named Richard Parry-Jones. What was it that made the journalists so excited about this seemingly humdrum car?

Owned a MkIII Mondeo Ghia X for 17 years, now an owner of a 10 year old Mk4.5 Titanium X. Absolutely brilliant car for the money! Modern contemporary styling, carriers 4 full adults, cheap to run, good on motorways and still solid - why buy anything else? Shame they are not progressing the Mondeo legacy, now recently passed on to Chinese market

Oh yes of course, the proper ST models! The Mk3 with the bodykit looks awesome. I had the Cougar with the Duratec V6, 170bhp version, but it sounded absolutely glorious. Loved that car (despite no doubt not handling as well as a Mondeo Mk3 or 4)

@@thenewsaint04 2007-2009 Titanium X Sport is everything ST except for the badge IMO. It's got more aggressive styling than standard models, a 2.5 turbo 5 pot from the Focus, 6 speed manual, interior touches etc... I agree the ST-Lines beyond it aren't proper STs and even the Titanium X Sport from 2010 is a shame because it is only available in PowerShift automatic and not manual. I'm not as mad about the choice to go 2.0 EcoBoost as performance was on par and consumption was improved, even if the 5 pot sound was missing... But to not offer a manual was a terrible oversight. 2010 onwards the styling, mod cons etc was improved too so it would have been a winner all in.

A little bit late to the game but just bought a 2012 2.0 EcoBoost Titanium X 240hp for €3550 here in Malaysia. Highest spec w ebony windsor leather which after 11 yrs still looks and feels like it was fitted last week. A Sony premium 9 speaker audio system. 17" wheels w 50 profile which rides so well but an 18 would be perfect. We don't get the heated or ventilated seats (dont need heat here but aircon would've been nice), no heated windscreen (again same reason). No headlight washers, leaving 2 useless bulges at the front. With 240hp and 350nm under the hood this mondeo looks very much the sleeper. Way more power than the toyotas or hondas. This car is so rare on the roads here that you'd probably see 10 ferraris before you actually come across one. Being a heavy car the start might not impress but once it gets going on the highway the top end is just bliss. And the handling just right. It gave me more confidence at speeds above 200kmh than most other cars, yes even a bmw, and it gets there so linearly the power just kept steady across the band. I'm getting like 10.4l/100km but that's just coz once I'm on the highway just can help myself flooring it. Driving normally would probably gets me down to 8l/100km with mixed driving. Overall a very satisfying buy considering the limited choices here at the price of a competitor car of the same year selling anything from €8000 to €10k, it's a bargain of the century. Well just though I'd pen and share my ownership experience here on JJ's channel. Peace.

@@simonlawrence5313 nice one, far better for the environment than making more cars. To be fair the 2.0 diesel lump and auto box in the mk5 really works well but it’s just the handling that ruins it. I went to France in the mk5 and the motorway was so smooth it was a pleasure to drive it as the suspension had nothing to do! but back here in uk it’s crash bang wallop over our roads again. 19” wheels don’t help either and they are so heavy, I’m sure a lot heavier than my old 18’s on the mk4 which increases The unsprung weight. Never a good thing. All the best. R

Have luckily owned one of these from new: A Mk4 Titanium X 2.5 Turbo in Black. Still have it. 113k on the clock and is good for the same again in my opinion. Our mechanic loves it too. Big service yearly and have just today - booked it in for its second cam belt (just in case). Love it. Love it. Love it. Carefully chosen at the time and definitely the best car that I've ever had. Gave it a bit of welly in the first couple of years and had many a race with Aston Martins etc. Now it is driven sedately and with respect. Thumbs up.

We've had our MK4.5 2012 since 2015 and I am loathe to change it. Bullet proof PSA diesel engine, vast, well laid out interior with comfortable seats, decent sized boot and great all round driving ability. Even though it's only the 140bhp diesel, it's got so much usable power when you need it (although by no means fast, more gutsy than anything). We've spent very little money on it aside from the usual maintenance. I had the clutch and flywheel replaced at 130k to extend the life of the car but at that mileage it would have needed to be changed anyway as it was approaching the end of its operating limits. It's now at 183,000 miles, still gets an easy 55mpg on the motorway and runs like a watch. Absolutely awesome cars which can now be picked up for pittance money. Great video 🙌🙌

I drove a 2006 mk3 at work and fell in love, my first Mondeo to personally own was a 1.8 diesel 2010 mk4, bought in 2014, the drive was enjoyable but over time I had issues with the transmission and moved onto a 2014 2 litre diesel titanium x Mondeo, purchased in 2018. It's practical, spacious for transporting household goods, the isofix system is solid for baby seats, I transported a dismantled bed in it when moving house. What I love is driving, the acceleration is just the right side of aggressive, the way it holds on bends is really fun, on long commutes it's fuel efficient. I have no reason to change, it's just the right car for me.

I had 3 of that shape mk4 as company cars loved them, especially the 2.2 Titanium X Estates. One of them saved my life as I was involved in a nasty head on crash with a lady in an Audi A3 who swerved onto my side of the road. I walked away without a scratch apart from ringing ears from all the airbags going off, even the doors all still opened as they should. The Audi A3 was a twisted mess and the lady unfortunately had some serious injuries and spent nearly year in hospital. I currently have a mk5 Mondeo which is generally very different from a mk4 its way more refined but no as sharp to drive.

I've got a mk4.5 estate from 2012...been the owner now since 2018 and it has only been a treat. Mine isn't the top spec (it's EU trend trim) but all the standards are there like parking sensors front and back, dual auto climate, LED interior and LED back lights, second gen bluetooth sony radio (the one you can play music from the phone, very useful). It's a 2.0 tdci 140hp and it hauls great, fuel economy is reasonable given the size... As for handling, Ford made an oopsie when the mk4.5 came out and set 215/50r17 as standard. I had these tires for years but the handling always felt a little bit off...This year I bought the original Mondeo mk4 tire size, 235/45r17 and now it feels awesome. The road feels less bumpy, the car sticks in corners like a much smaller car and best part is that the fuel economy doesn't suffer... I tried to understand Ford and why they changed over to 215/50r17 altho the car was originally designed for 235/45r17 (probably by the guy mention in the video 🙌) and the only thing I managed to uncover is that they did it because of road noise... but honestly, I can't tell (if there is a difference, it's like 2db)...In my opinion I think they wanted to standardise (aka cheapen the production) of their 17'' wheels because only the Mondeo mk4 had 7,5x17 wide wheels, the newer mk4.5 wheels were all 7x17 and shared with the Focus (don' t worry I got myself the 7.5 ones 😁)... Other than that weird decision by Ford, the Mondeo has been a dream, literally, a dream, get an inflatable bed and you can dream like me in the estate 😂, from boot door to folded seats it's like 180cm (I'm a side sleeper 😁) and the estate has no lip or step between the boot floor and the folded seats... It's a camper, it's a hauler, it sticks to corners, it has room for 3 dogs in the boot... Bruh, why buy anything else 😂

Got an OG 2008 MK4 about an year ago - 2.0 145BHP Duratec + LPG. It is an old one and it showed, especially visible on the inerior materials. Unfortunately it had a lot of hidden issues, that needed to be resolved and after spending some significant money (about 1,5 kEUR) one of the issues (cold start below 15 degrees) is still there even after replacing a lot of fuel system parts - injectors, catalysator, throttle valve, collector tube. But still I cannot deny the practicality and the size of it and the surpising amount of extras in it. And additionally when it gets into temperature after the shaky cold start it is surprisingly agile for such an old, not so powerful and ordinary inline petrol motor with an LPG. The fuel consumption is still not bad either for 15 year old car on a LPG - city drive is about 15l/100km in the winter and outside on the highway it drops to about 10-11l/100km on LPG. And not to forget that the parts are really cheap, compared to worn out diesels or unreliable ecoboosts of the same age...

Great video. I have a 2009 mk4 Titanium X Sport estate 2.2 TDCi, incredible spec. So many for sale adverts will list their Titanium X + X Sport as "Top Spec" when they really arent. My Mondeo has got more luxuries than new cars coming off the lot today including high end cars and mine isnt even fully spec'd out. I have the fairly rare heated rear seats as well as heated front 8 way (i think) fully electric seats with 5 memory slots, Xenon headlights with 'Follow me home' function, dipping mirrors when reversing, the blaupunkt touchscreen head unit featuring sat nav, bluetooth calls and music streaming and a lot more others. But at the same time, theres still a fair few factory options I dont have - Sunroof, adaptive cruise control, Tyre pressure monitoring, hill hold assist, cooled front seats, DAB radio and a few others. All this available on a 2008 car. And people still choose to buy brand new cars with the plainest spec! My estate is lovely to drive, handles really well and has power when wanted. Fuel economy is decent, my 2.2 gets around 43mpg with a mix of around town and motorway driving. It's very comfortable on long journeys and pretty reliable, so much so that last year I did 15k miles in one year which I never have done anything close to before. And when it decides it doesnt want to be reliable, parts are so easy to find, lots of breakers vehicles and aftermarket solutions. It tows really well too. Lots of space in the boot, especially with the seats folded down, once had 4 18" alloys with tyres in the boot and still had room for more than a weeks shopping!! Ive previously set up a bed in the rear and slept in it before. Sure from the outside it just looks like a mondeo but I know as an owner that I most likely have the same, if not more toys, gadgets and comforts than most cars on the road. I'd definitely recommend and the X Sports seem to be holding their value really well. I came to mine from a MK4 Focus ST-Line X (2019) and much prefer the Mondeo. As said in the video, if you're going to get a Mondeo go for at least the Titanium, they are not expensive to buy either.

I have a 2007 2.0 TDCi Titanium estate (not x). I bought it for winter climbing trips to Scotland so 2 of us could sleep in the back. It does that superbly, no need to stop in 400 miles except for the inevitable pee break. It effortlessly demolishes motorway miles at 59mpg at 65/70 and averages 47 daily. It's comfy & quiet with great performance & handling for it's size. It also tows my dragster on a trailer easily, with the car loaded with tools, camping gear etc. The only weak point is the clutch on fully loaded hill starts. It's done over 180k now of which 60k is mine in 5 years. Had a seized rear caliper after a lengthy park-up, starter motor bearings went & last year the clutch failed without warning, otherwise it's been good & passed MOTs easily. I haven't looked after it well but it's surviving. I like the styling apart from the colour (bland) & the vane-spoked wheels.

I've had very little trouble indeed with my '08 2.0 petrol Titanium X in the 6 years I've owned it, and was encouraged to hear KZbinr Alan Howatt say that he's found these cars achieve big mileages and exhibit no major weaknesses even in minicab use - so they're pretty tough things. However: The driver's seat bolster doesn't last forever and is NLA. Once it goes soft the hard plastic seat surround is uncomfortable but tucking a bit of cardboard behind the bolster fixes it. My heated seats have never worked and I've never got to the bottom of why they don't, but fortunately the alcantara never feels cold anyway. I recently had to replace one of the active headlamps because it was throwing up 'headlamp errors' due to the ECU losing contact with the motor. Fortunately not expensive from ebay, I had the braking surface of one front disk partially separate from the hub due to corrosion which caused severe brake judder. Not seen this on any other car I've owned.

Nice video! My dad bought a Mk4 Mondeo new and he still owns it today - it's really been a great family car! That said, Some pros and cons specifically about the petrol 1.6 liter: + It has more than ample cabin space, and all plastics in the cabin are top-quality - it's really a very nice place to sit in. + Handling is really good, especially with the wide tires. + The car is drop-dead gorgeous, especially with the right rim and grille. - The engine feels like it's really struggling with Mondeo's bulky frame. - No 6th gear means 3500-4500rpm at highway speeds, and that creates a ton of cabin noise. - The car is huge and its shape (especially the upslope on the boot) means it's really hard to tell how close you are to objects in the rear (dad didn't select parking sensors either) - Fuel economy is decidedly worse than BMW of the era. - The car has Bluetooth but you can't play music on it (though that's admittedly very common for cars of that era). - The car theoretically has voice-controlled radio, CD *and* climate, but it's really clunky so you only use it once or twice for the sake of the gimmick and never again.

Cheers Anastasios! I can imagine that the 1.6 petrol is a bit underpowered so the fuel economy is probably bad because the engine has to work so hard to make progress. And you're absolutely right about the visibility, I should have mentioned it :) Yes, the Bluetooth, my Merc from the same era can only do phone and not music (and that's only if I buy the official bluetooth adapter)

Hi, long term mondeo owner here. By long term I've owned my 2009 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi since it was 6 months old as an ex demonstrator at Keighly Ford. Mine has Privacy Glass and sports pack with the spoiler so if still looks good even today. The MK4 is without any arguments the most reliable iteration of the mondeo accross the generations. The Euro 4 PSA 2.0 TDCi is virtually bombproof (unlike the 1.8 one which is prone to wet timing belt failures). It's also got advantages (and disadvantages) over the euro 5 2.0 TDCi engine. For starters, there is no vaporiser for the DPF on the eur4 (a known problem area on the eur5), also you can blank off the EGR valve and the ECU doesn't care, unlike the eur5. But the eur5 is more economical and cheaper to tax. Also if you have parking sensors on the Face-lift model and you change the headunit, the parking sensors will stop working. This isn't the case for the pre face-lift. The mk4 was designed to be 10% quieter than the mk3 and is generally better made, though some say the mk3 is better to drive.
@JJonCars
@JJonCars 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is long term! Best I've managed is 5 years haha (that was with a Ford, the old Cougar, which was a Mondeo underneath with a Mondeo engine) This is the thing, older diesel engines are generally more reliable as all the problems with modern ones are all down to the stuff they add to try and reduce emissions. So you might spend more on fuel, but you probably save in the long run with much less repair cost :)

Had a titanium x car and it was brilliant, big family car, massive boot, could take anything I threw in there, and still handled like a smaller sportier car. 50mpg from a decent diesel engine. Could and did drive it all day long and still get out feeling fresh. Had to get a ULEZ car so chopped it in for a 2017 mondeo and regretted it ever since. Sold the old girl to a friend, when it had 144k mikes on it and I think it’s still going several years later. Even now I can’t find anything on the used market that floats my boat. Might get a 240bhp petrol mk4 as that would still be OK for ULEZ. 👍👍

I own an early Mk4 (I think) 2013, 2.0L TDCi140 Titanium X Business Edition 5 door hatchback. 🥴That's a mouthfull eh? 😁 I was able to put a single mattress in the back and close the hatch back door (Put the back seats down of course) I have to say it's the best I have ever had or driven and I passed my test in 86 having 5 cars since. It has some awesome toys too....Hill Start assist and Cruise control, Speed Limiter, Heated and Cooled for the front seats, all electric operation except some functions of the seats. I have had it for 5 years so far and its been so reliable.....never drinks oil, so good. I regularily have it serviced which is good. It's a joy to drive. It is starting to need some attention now, being 10 years old what you expect... 101K on the clock so a timing belt is needed very soon, got a problem with the front lights according to the warning on the dash, maybe just a couple of bulbs....but that's it really.....(For now, I hope) It has saved my life too with its amazing handling. I was going too fast (90) down a known country lane when just at the worst moment, a car came towards me and its lights blinded me, I was aware of the sudden 30 ish degree turn but the lights were the problem and so unexpected. When my vision was able to see the bend I was too close and hoped for the best yanking the wheel to the right. The car lost grip, the back end shifted then regained grip which threw me to the left after leaving the road for a fraction of a second. When the car regained grip for the second time, I was facing the correct angle and immediately slowed.... I had to check my underwear I can tell you.... I watch my in car video footage occasionaly just to remind me how close I came..... I have been spoiled, so unless I get some serious wheels for my next car, I would think I have taken a step or two back..

Had a test drive in a MK 3 estate, when they were the current Mondeo. I was looking for a working car at the time. Tested a few estate cars, one of which was a V W Passat. Nothing at all against the V W Passat but the Mondeo MK 3 was a 2.0tdci automatic and it was superb, great handling car too. I hear of the auto powershift problems but not sure now what the MK 3 had in auto form but the whole car was just so good I didn't want to stop driving it. Dithered and further dithered and didn't buy the MK 3? I have regetted that to this day. I have been in friends Mondeos some of which are estate cars. The MK 4 estate on a long journey was awesome, totally awesome. All the seats including the rear seats were heated. Drove a 2011 2.2 Tdci Titanium X Sport for 6yrs and was easily one of the 3 best cars I've owned. Way better than a couple of BMW 3 series, Audi a4, Mercedes E350 D v6 to name a few I've owned. Well made, plenty of kit, huge amount of interior space, comfortable and handled brilliantly... During the last year it shared the driving duties with a Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake and any time I needed to drive across country , rather than on a motorway, the Mondeo was always 1st choice... Was a real shame that Ford never blessed the Mondeo from Mk1 to MK5, with a true performance version to take on the German brands... They had the engines and hardware, but these were always reserved for Jaguar when Ford owned them.

I'd argue the Titanium X Sport (in 2.5 turbo format), would be the top spec as it has a better appearance, better handling etc, but this comes close. The 2.5T petrol has the benefit of a nice 5 pot sound and, if you're a Londoner, is ULEZ compliant unlike this TDCi. Still, I'm glad to see content on this. I have a 2009 2.5T and I love it for all its flaws and terrible consumption. Just hit over 100k and still my evening and weekend vehicle (don't need it during the day most days). A little tip, there's a Nokia Bluetooth module in the glovebox in a compartment above it which is hard to get out but can be replaced with one from a slightly newer Focus which allows for A2DP so you can play music via Bluetooth directly through the build in Sony system (it's automatically compatible, including the Ford Covers+ system, steering wheel buttons etc!) without the need for a dongle taking up a lighter slot and having radio frequency audio quality deterioration. The centre console, cupholders and glovebox are all worse than my previous Mazda 3 from 2006, but the sunglasses holder is present at least unlike the Mazda. The boot space makes up for lack of storage elsewhere; it's humongous!

My dad had a Mark 2 Ford Mondeo, 1999 T Reg, he loved the motor and when he got another car, I had it and I ran it for a further 9 years, before retiring her in 2017. She never failed an MOT, the power of the car was crazy, and at 80,000 miles on the clock, she could've easily done more, but little things were starting to go here and there. Dad now has a Mk4 Titanium X and he loves the car. I love it as well, and one day might be driving it as well. One thing that's impressed me with Ford Mondeos are the extras. The Mark 2 was a 2 litre ztec, with a CD player and air con. Compare to my Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 which was 2 years younger, no air con and no CD Player. So that's always impressed me. Mechanically speaking, like I said the Mark 2 never failed an MOT, the only trouble I ever had was with the battery, which is just an expected thing over time and eventual wear and tear on the sills, etc. Which I'd fully expect from a car 18 years old. The corsa was a nightmare. Suspension springs replaced, 4. Exhaust replacement - 5, replacement brakes, discs, fan belt, the list went on and on. My Mark 2 had THE ORIGINAL EXHAUST SYSTEM!! Sorry, I get a bit excited. Fantastic cars and absolutely gutted Ford is retiring the Mondeo altogether. Not all of us want bloody SUVs.

Did I imagine it or did top gear award it the car of the year shortly after it was released, (over a veyron or some other HyperCar) ? I’m sure clarko said it was because “it’s all the car you could ever want” ? Maybe I dreamed it. I’ve never found the clip on KZbin anyway. Rich.

You know, it rings a bell for me too, but I haven't seen those old Top Gear episodes in many years so I can't remember either. They definitely liked the car though. Actually - in one episode they were joking about not being able to agree on a best car, and I'm sure one of them picked the Mondeo, but the other two picked something else. Or maybe you dreamed it :D Cheers Rich

Have to agree on the Mk4 being one of the best cars ever. I regret having to give up my 2009 2.0TDCi Titanium Sport I had for 8 years, but that was because the clutch became too heavy for my left knee and I had to go to an auto. Though that is something I'll have a problem in any dual-mass flywheeled car now. Equipment is great, space is amazing. I doubt even the 5-series matches the Mondeo hatch for boot space. I agree it is decent enough handling to be fun enough on twisty A-roads. I did a lot of motorway driving in it on the M6 and M74, sitting at 80mph where possible it averaged 56mpg over those journeys. It is an immense mile-muncher. I'd have another but it would have to be an automatic.

Good cars mondeo, solid engines, steering is quite heavy and has a shit turning circle i prefer that as makes it seem more luxury and good for long cruises, gear box is great feels solid and supsnesion is comfortable and they seat for me one of the most comfortable i sat in

Technically the 'Titanium X Sport' was the true range topper, which ironically is the trim level that featured in the James Bond film referenced in the video/review.

I've got a 2008 2.0 petrol in zetec trim with 164k miles. I've had it for a few years now. Smooth engine not bad on fuel 35.3mpg on E10. 0-60 in 10 seconds. has a camchain rather than belt and those units are good for 300k miles. I'll probably stick with petrol as more cities adopt Ulez.

mine is 2014 model (176kw, 240bhp, petrol, manual) 19" alloys. Love that car to bits. Pure jewel. The only thing I hate about my Mondeo is a missing possibility of lowering the seat position in the front. I prefer to have seats as low as possible. Otherwise, huge pleasure in every way!!!

I like my mk4titanium too, much more space than the mk3, much more modern feels really premium inside. But one thing anoying me is the loud boomy sound intrusion from the road bumps and routh surfaces(you hear it in this video too using headphones). After 2 years trying different things I'm sure it is due to the stiff, sporty trimed springs and maybe not for quet purpose designed chassis(i. e. knocking on the bootfloor in the mondeo mk3 is much less resonating) . Removing the rear sway bar makes it significantly better, without loosing the good handling. But still a softer suspension would be great (I have the standard, not the sport suspension). PS: Alubutyl mats didn't help, rather made it worse, shifting the boomy sound to a deeper frequency. Especially on the rear doors, boot and floor. Better use lightweight sound absorbing materials. Maybe someone out there has an idea or solution?

The only thing I can think of that might help, though it wouldn't cure it completely is quieter tyres, if you've not tried that already
