Not only might it have a heavy flywheel, but 5 cylinders in general are quite slow revving due to the inherent balancing needed for them as they are naturally more unbalanced than other configurations. Felt this when I drove my mate's old XR5 focus, but that car was tuned so it felt plenty fast anyway. The slow revving doesn't change my desire to own a 5 cylinder in the future though. I hope one day I'll own a V70r or an S2 or something.

mmm I believe a 5 cylinder is well known to be smoother than a 4 cylinder. Only the state of tune will effect its ability to rev quickly.

@@xsduprwd3937 Unfortunately, there is a torque imbalance along the horizontal plane of the engine, meaning a five-cylinder is constantly trying to twist or flip over its length, from google..

That's a good point the S60R I reviewed also was quite slow revving. A lighter flywheel would definitely help though

@@moonbrothers9098 If you googled it, you will know a 5 pot is inherently a smoother motor. Your twist or flip analogy was a issue in the design which manufactures clearly engineered out of the finished product.

I've always liked the 5 cylinder Mk4 Mondeos. They are bloody rare in NZ though. As for the engine it can be woken up considerably and a good exhaust system goes along way on a 5 cylinder. I've owned a mk4 Mondeo but it was just a boring 4 banger with an auto. Exceptionally comfy car, safe and great factory sound system. It was the rubbish auto gearboxes Ford fitted to the later mk4s and on that killed the Mondeo name. But if you get one with the standard 6 speed auto or manual their actually sweet cars.

Doesnt really sound special, normally these 5 cylinders sound like mini v10s. maybe with an intake that can be remedied. but ill alwayd appreciate people driving something novel like this. keeping the odd cars on thr road.

This car already had an intake, turbo cars need an exhaust to sound good, with an intake you just get more turbo noises not engine noise

I had a Milltek exhaust on mine, it sounded fantastic. Completely different to the car being reviewed - it even had some subtle overrun pops too! I also ended up putting a Bluefin tune on it as well, gave it heaps more pull from the mid-top end.

Cause it’s got a factory exhaust? Would sound sick if it had a nice exhaust on it. Intake isn’t gonna make the engine any louder

It’s very heavily detuned from factory to meet nz standards, can easily make a lot more power but still a cool car to drive

Volvo tuned these for torque more than high rpm power. Tune us no different for NZ. Same power in Aus.
