I'm not bitching at you and I know they tell you to put the jumper wire on it but that's really not right. It will wear the teeth down quickly on a high compression motor if you do it like that. If you notice, the factory starter has a hump in it and under that hump there is a relay device built into the starter that keeps the motor stopped until starter gear is engaged into the flywheel. When it engages the relay in the starter makes and the motor runs. The new one has the relay too but its not tied to the single wire post like the factory starter is. The way you have that wired, the starter motor and gear are spinning when the fender relay is energized and the gear just runs into the flywheel spinning. You may have no problems at all, but the starter will be running before it engages. The way to do it right with that starter is to take the large wire that goes down to the starter from the fender relay and put it on the constant hot side of the original fender relay along with the battery wire and run that original wire down the large on the starter. Then run another wire (12ga.) from the other side of the relay (where the original starter wire was) down to the solenoid post that engages the starter gear. This way when the fender mounted starter solenoid engages the starter motor does not start spinning until the gear is engaged.

Yep, that is exactly the way Ford wired their PMGR starters in the 90's on certain vehicles that still used the fender mounted relay. I've got two vehicles wired just like you said for years now and never a problem. One a Ford PMGR starter and the other a powermaster starter.

Ahhhh thank you for this video. The instructions are so vague about the jumper wire from IGN to BAT. now I know what I have to do thank you!!!

Good info, thank you! '67 Mustang GT with the 390FE. Went with a powermaster starter since the compression ratio is now above 11:1. I was perplexed on if they actually wanted us to make a jumper between the IGN and BAT terminals.

Same exact prob with my 68 f100!!! Long tube headers make it hard to fit a stock starter
@killykillerton7937 Жыл бұрын
Batt terminal on starter goes direct to battery post on fender solenoid + solenoid wire on starter goes to starter post on fender solenoid Otherwise when engine starts the DC permanent magnet motor becomes a generator and supplies power to the solenoid from the power wire through the jumper and starter stays engaged.

Great video, thanks. Same truck as mine.. Can't decide between the powermaster or MSD starter.. What's your take.

Not sure about MSD starter, MSD is a well known name, I went with the I got just due to price, this is a work truck and doesnt get that many miles put on it so I figured that one would be good enough.

Was this a direct bolt in? Any shims? Also what length battery cable did you go with?
@Spoons33roadster6 жыл бұрын
Why on earth did you grind the block to fit the starter ? The front of the starter is clockable just undo the two grub screws and twist the body to clear the block!
@doughknuts6 жыл бұрын
Even clocking the stater it rubs the block....only way to get it to fit.

Shim?

I got a 74 f 250 with a licoln 429 built into a 460 thing never wants to start in the cold slow cranking with a new stock starter ..going to try one of these do they work good ..

So far I have not had any issues with the starter. The stock starter was so close to the headers it was getting heat soaked and would hardly start.

How is the starter holding up?

Still works great! No more issues with heat soaking

I think I am having the same issue with heat soak. How did you know it was heat soak and how did you fix it?

It won't buff out.....now.

Did you install the shim that the starter came with before putting it on the motor?
@maj.FrankMBurns Жыл бұрын
You don't EVER shim a ford starter
@MattsRageFitGarage4 ай бұрын
@@maj.FrankMBurns Powermaster usually includes a shim to set the depth engagement to the flexplate but its not always needed. It's not a shim that bolts between the starter and transmission case like you think it is.
