Keep doing the brake videos (especially drum brakes). You may not realize it, but there is so much we learn by watching how you approach a fastener or overcoming problems. Things like tool choices, accessing/approaching fasteners, overcoming adversity, or even just installing fiddly springs add to our knowledge base. What you sometimes do automatically is a revelation for some of us. Thank you for what you do.

Good video, very interesting, FYI when I got out of high school I went to work at a Oldsmobile/Datsun dealership servicing used cars that were traded in, and one time I had a Ford Granada to service and I noticed that the brakes felt funny when I pulled it in the shop so I put it on the lift and started checking them and I started the car and put it in drive and gave it a little gas then pushed the brake pedal and the rear wheels just kept turning no matter how hard I pushed, the car had about 75K miles on it and the brakes were brand new, so I got my boss to pump them up and I did not get one drop of fluid so I cracked a line coming out of the TEE on top of the axle housing, still no fluid, so I loosened the flexible line going into the TEE and got fluid, so I took the TEE off and it was never drilled out at the factory, no rear brakes ever, very interesting, I showed it to the mechanics in the main shop and they got a kick out of that, I just wanted to tell you about that experience, Thanks, Dave

I had a real bad experience with drums on an old Tahoe, and I said "Never again"... After watching that video, I said "ummm hmmm.... Yep. Never again." Great Video Sir.

Well, I mean no slight to Eric when I say this, but anyone can do it with a lift, a big air compressor, and all the right tools. I mean, spring pliers. What shade tree mechanic bothers to get those, right? We're all out here on our bad knees on the ground fighting with a pair of regular needle-nose pliers trying to fight those f#$_ing springs back into place and by the time we're done (if we haven't already called "uncle") we're ready to beat an automotive engineering to death. It's for reasons like this that I'm honestly surprised it's not easier to find a place that rents lift time and air tools by the hour. I mean, I get the liability issues but I bet some smart entrepreneur could make it work.

Drum brakes aren't hard to do. I've done them before I had a cell phone. At least now you can take a picture to see how everything goes back together. No one to show me how to do them, no special tools, barely had a jack. Pair of pliers and some sockets/wrenches and you can fix them. You may mess up the order the first few times, but after that you start to get it.

Excellent! Glad I never worked in rust country (but now live there...). A thought... back in (stone age) high school auto shop, our instructor often went on over the importance of giving calipers a couple of brass mallet raps before the last bleeding 'pump' cycle/s... in order to knock loose 'cling on' bubbles within said caliper. Always did it out of habit, sometimes even with master, wheel & slave cylinders; but don't know how much good it actually does. Got some odd looks from other techs too. Cool videos, Thanks!

@@ekop1778 yeah..Ford Rangers are junk. My first one (1990) only made 278,000 before I traded it in in great running condition (and I know it lived long past that and probably still lives on!) My current Ranger (2004) is currently at around 240,000 and still running and driving great except the wonderful road salt of the northern environment is starting to take its toll. I'm sure either truck would make it (and my old one probably has far exceded) 300k miles in a salt free environment. Even your prized Subarus wont make it that long when operated exclusively in the northern US/Canada. Say what you will about other Ford vehicles, but the Ranger line up to 2011 (idk about the new 2019 line) is as bullet proof as they come!

I've used liquid electrical tape a try too, up here in upstate NY. I use silicone caulking now. It just pulls off in one piece, whereas the liquid electrical tape would sometimes leave pieces of itself on the zerks and other fittings. I heard it's an off-roaders trick to caulk the fittings. Also heard they do the same thing with off-road military trucks. Not sure if any of that is true however.

goenitzlopez Yep, they're still popular. They're cheap and last a long time because they don't have much braking power. The 75/25 distribution of braking usage makes rear brakes last 2-3 times as long as the front brakes, so it's not too big of a deal unless you tow or have a performance car.

If it still won't come free you can just twist the caliper off as well, although I'd rather swap the line at that point in all honesty.

"New school" mechanics are intimidated by drum brakes because they've never seen, let alone worked on them. A close friend of mine is the "automotive technology" (or something like that) instructor at our local vocational high school. He stopped by my little shop a few Sundays back as I was getting set to do drum brakes (all 4 wheels) on a 68 Chevy C-10. He actually only stopped to drink a beer and shoot the breeze until he saw what I had in the shop. He then proceeded to pretty much demand that I bring it to the school so that the students could do the work. You should've seen their faces when they got the tires off! The looks were priceless! It was even better when my friend and I showed them how to get the drums off. They were dumbfounded by all the springs etc. Since the truck is getting a nut/bolt restoration, it took them a couple days, under my friends careful supervision, to do the job, but, they did it right and learned a good lesson. Now, they all want to participate in the rest of the project!

So now I know how that "Neversieze encrusted" screwdriver ended up in my tool box. LOL. I have been doing brakes for over 30 years and still don't mind watching someone else doing it. (actually prefer it). Can always learn new tricks. Now, I have to go and clean out my drawer and feed the Ultra mini horses. Speaking of horses, You should do a video on the GM (Malibu's) horse shoe hold down spring brakes. I have a tool but they can be a mother...

I, for one, will never get tired of what might be "basic" brake job videos. I'm a home DIY'er taking care of five (well, soon to be four) cars (including an '08 Ranger), so having a reference for ANY of this information - especially a video - is like a gold mine. Thank you for taking the time to put these together, Eric!

I knew someone else would ask this :) My worry would be for high brake heat affecting the speed sensor wiring, since it was shielding the wire. I doubt most daily driver type of use would get the brakes very hot, but that depends on lots of big hills, heavy trailers, or motorsports use for other vehicles.

I like those Roloc discs, but for people thinking about it, remember air powered disc sanders take a lot of air volume. You need a better than average air compressor, otherwise electric is more effective. Rotary parts in general are so cheaply made that I get bits of the disc or wire wheel embedded in anything close by. Certainly want eye protection.

spelunkerd my 17cfm compressor must be better than average, as it keeps up with die grinders, air sanders, rattle guns, blowers & spray guns no worries! Yes, it cycles a lot more but is a hell of a lot cheaper to run than my 50cfm 3 phase unit!!
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, many would envy 17 cfh, I'm lucky to get 6. In my shop it is only an issue with grinders and spray guns, other air tools like ratchets consume far less.

When I worked on brakes, starting in the 50s. we did not have any never seize. used dabs of chassis/wheel bearing grease or a little motor oil. Anyone else old enough to remember stringy wheel bearing grease. As a kid we used to say if the rear end howls when you let off on the gas, thats ok. but if it howls when you step on the gas its going bad. that may not work on everything rear wheel drive.

Hey Eric, If you have the opportunity to do one, make a video of a GM "single-spring" drum brake job (like on many later Buicks). These have to be the most unnecessarily difficult rear brakes ever devised by the evil brains of GM.

Brake jobs are fun to watch and the most fun thing I like about them is using the die grinder so keep them coming! Also in school, the teacher said to never add any grease or oil on the wheel studs. Guess they won't come loose if torqued properly? And lastly, when are you going to make a shop/toolbox tour.
