Rear differential needed approximately 2.5 quarts of 80w90 gear oil to refill..
@rollin18wheels5 ай бұрын
How did you get 2.5 qt to fit? I couldn’t get more than just over 2 qt, like about 2 1/8 quarts was all mine would hold and even then it was pouring out of the fill plug
@Nate05144 ай бұрын
@@rollin18wheels Read on some forums that it's between 2 and 2.5 qts. Just depends on the different models of each diff I'm assuming.

The instruction in Amsoil specifically says: *”Fill to no more than 1/4 to 9/16 inch below fill plug hole”* So it should *NOT only NOT overflow, but also have 1/4 to 9/16 inch “BELOW the plug hole.”* My first question is: how much oil did you still have in that 1 gallon container? Deducting that leftover oil from 1 gallon gives us the amount of oil you had in the gear container. Then, from that we should deduct about 10-15%. That final number should be the maximum amount we should have in the gear container.

The same info from the axle tag is available on the door sticker on the driver side where the date of manufacture and vin and paint code etc is stamped

Try to remove the fill plug before draining the fluid just in case fill plug isn’t nice.

Can you use 75w-90 fluid? According to research this fluid is better than 80w-90.

What about the vent and tube? Good time to check those. Also, Dino oil might not be the best to use. Valvoline 75w 90 semi or full synthetic can help in the winter as well as give you slightly better MPG. Dino if you haul or pull a lot of weight regularly. 75W 90 if you mostly do traveling with light to no load.

Was that anti-sieze on the fill bolt, or locktite? Or was it just whatever was leftover from whoever used rtv? 😂

I had not noticed that but yeah, if you freeze at 00:39 there's red on the threads.. You may be right, some type of anti-seize.. Not sure though..

It's been a little over a year and no leaks using just the gasket.. You can use RTV but there's a special one made specifically for differentials:www.amazon.com/Permatex-81182-Gear-Gasket-Maker/dp/B0023GM2KK?th=1
