Was looking for this exact video! My 1994 Mazda B4000 SE 4WD manual speedometer starts bouncing back and forth when I hit 50 mph. The needle will usually bounce between 50-60 consistently when I hit that speed. I was told I should probably grease my speedometer cable. Would this same method work on my particular truck? And how would I pull the whole cable out, grease it with a PTFE-type lubricant and reinsert it from the gear to the instrument panel correctly?
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Yes, sounds like you need to grease the speedo cable. I'm not familiar with that particular cable, but normally, you can remove the gear from the bottom and slide the cable out of the sheath from the top. There may be a keeper on one end or the other you have to remove, but otherwise, just slide it out, wipe it off and put your new PTFE lube on the full length of the cable, smooth it out and reinstall. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! You'll need 1 or 2 teeth fewer than your current gear. If your speedo is 5mph lower than actual speed in the 20-40mph range, one tooth less will do it. If the speedo is 5mph under actual speed in the 45mph+ range, you'll need two fewer teeth.

Dennis- Can I assume that you removed the original 225/70-14 tires and installed 235/70-16's. I have just done the same thing on my 1994 Ranger. When I am going 65 (per the speedo) I am actually going 75 (per the GPS). Are these the same conditions as you found with your truck and if so did the blue gear correct it? Thanks
@dwcoffey8 жыл бұрын
+Dirk DeJong Hi Dirk, yes sir...that's exactly what we did. The blue gear got us as close as possible. Up to about 50mph with the blue gear, the speedo is now correct. At 65mph, the speedo is about 3mph slower than actual speed, but since that is the smallest gear available, that's as good as we can get it. It definitely much better than being off 10-15mph though.
@dirkdejong84218 жыл бұрын
+Dennis Coffey-------- Thanks Dennis. I finally got rid of those puny 14" wheels and the extremely limited tire options that fit them and put on a set of 16's from a later model. It changed my whole attitude about the truck. It sounded like you were on the same page so I just wanted to make sure you had the same tire sizes etc. I will double check my current gear to be sure I have a green one now but it sounds like the blue will be needed regardless. Thanks Again, Dirk
@dwcoffey8 жыл бұрын
+Dirk DeJong Our Ranger is our youngest son's, and we both thought the same thing about those 14s. I lucked out and found a used set of Sportrac 16 wheels at a great price, got new tires put on them and it really made a difference in how that truck sits, looks and rides. Thanks for your comments and feedback, I appreciate. Godd luck with your truck!
@dirkdejong84218 жыл бұрын
+Dirk DeJong------For anybody else that happens across this post I have some more information that may be helpful to some. On my 1994 Ranger Extra Cab 4.0l V6 rwd truck I had stock 225/70-14 tires, an R5 axle code which translates to 3.55 final drive gears and an orange speedometer driven gear. When I installed 235/70-16 tires I was getting a speedometer reading that was 10 mph low (65 shown/ 75 actual). Using the information Dennis provided, I calculated the required gear using both of the formulas and averaged them to get a 17.78 tooth requirement. I installed an 18 tooth (grey) driven gear. My speedometer is now reading virtually perfect throughout the range. Hope this helps someone.

@dwcoffey5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry Sanga, but I'm not familiar with that vehicle at all. But...usually, if gears are getting damaged, it is because one of the gears is moving in a direction it shouldn't. In other words, maybe the speedometer gear is not properly meshing with the gear in the transmission, perhaps the retainer bolt holding the cable in is loose. If not, perhaps the gear inside the transmission is loose or damaged and chewing up the speedometer gear. I wish I could be more help.

Dennis, Thanks for posting this excellent video. 2 questions: I am using just to simplify the non-functioning odometer and trip meters troubleshooting for my 96 Ranger. DYT that it is a bad gear within the instrument readout itself or could it be something else?. The speedometer is still working. Also wondering if you might have an idea of the number of teeth I need for my 75 M-B O309D Bus that needed a rebuilt Allison AT540 transmission which I removed and replaced from another application (dump truck) that now reads exactly half the actual speed? I would think that 1/2 the number of teeth is correct. A speed shop in my area (Puget Sound)I visited probably has or can get the right part. Your opinion would be highly valued.
@dwcoffey4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Mark! If the speedo is working and the odometer is not, I'd suspect a problem in the instrument cluster. Not sure of that, but that's where I'd start. Dennis Coffey hmm I wonder what's the issue with my dad's speedometer I've drove it with a obd2 diagnostic tester and the vss sensor isn't responding it at times intermittently comes on till you cut off the truck then poof it's out again. See I believe it's something in the wiring harness cause I believe it was cut into to bypass something to pass a emissions test or some state test in Missouri where he bought it and in Tennessee we don't do yearly testing but they seem to have I think compromised the wiring harness and it should be working fine cause I replaced it with a new vss sensor. You think it could be what I'm suspecting or could it be in the instrument cluster itself? I really am bumfuzzled with it I can't really see no frail wires or breakage in the integrity of the wiring harness I really can't figure out what else it could be like I said before it does at rare occasions just up and pops its silly self on and works fine just for that duration of the drive but it won't rengage after shutting off the truck.
@dwcoffey6 жыл бұрын
Joe I've read on some of the Ford and Ranger forums online that a lot of guys have had problems with the speedo in their Ranger due to bad sensors, wires that have worn through the insulation, and dirty/bad connectors. So based on all that, I think you may want to check the vss connector, make sure it's clean inside and making a good contact, snapped in fully, etc. Then do your best to trace the wires to the vss. One guy I read about had trouble with his speedo because where the wires ran through a section of wire-loom, the loom had slipped and allowed the wires to rub on something, wear the insulation away and then cause a short. I don't know if this is feasible, but if you have a VOM, maybe you can get to each end of the wiring run and check for continuity, especially if you move the wire around. That may help you either find the problem, or eliminate it from your list of possibilities. The other option, as you mention, could be the speedo itself. Probably the only way to know that for sure, is to replace it with one that's known to work. Maybe you can snag one cheap at the junkyard? Let me know if I can help, Joe. Thanks!!
