Those are seals with rubber on inner and outer edges. Almost all shielded bearings have steel shields. Some have seals and shields.

I would remove the seal on each bearing,, then pack the bearing with more grease that that little DAB THEY COME WITH,,, put the seal back in place and reassemble it,,,, there is such thing as having TOO MUCH GREASE!!! IF YOU PACK THE WHOLE HOUSING,, THE GREASE WILL HOLD MORE HEAT IN AND THE BEARINGS WON'T LAST LONG FROM OVERHEATING!!

Hand pack the bearings just like auto wheel bearings in the past. It takes 70 pumps from a grease gun to fill the spindle and that is an awful waste of grease. When you sharpen the blades check the grease in the bearings by play in the shaft. Chinese bearings aren't produced by these people to last very long anyway.

I don't know if you mentioned it, but I just got done doing mine and it's important c people understand that when replacing you need to first put the belt up over the clutch in front and leave out of pulley to give it extra movement. Then snake the belt to back and from back to front begin placing belt on pulley. If you don't flip the belt over the clutch in the front to begin with, when you begin putting the belt on the pulleys from back to front, when you go to put the belt on the front if you got this big clutch, that's gonna be in your way and not enough play in the belt to be able to get it over that and if you could you probably stretch it so much then it would no longer be any good. Good luck I hope I didn't make this more confusing. Overall, I really liked your video dude. Thank you very much. Was a great help. Got me thinking.

Hey Dennis. Your lawn mower videos have been a great help to me. I know this isn’t one of those but I have a question. I have the same rider as you. I have replaced the steering wheel , adapter both top and middle. How do I stop the steering shaft from moving up and down. Thanks a bunch.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching!! There are a couple of things I'd check. Make sure the nut on the end of the steering shaft at the steering wheel is tight. Also, near the lower end of the steering shaft, there should be a retaining pin that goes thru the steering shaft. Make sure it is inserted and in good shape. Lastly, I'd check the lower steering shaft support. It should have two bolts thru it, holding it to the frame. I hope this helps!!

Thanks for watching! Most spindles will not allow the bearings to get displaced by over greasing, but....as many are not aware, there are some spindles out there, on cheaper mowers, that have no retention on the upper bearing. There is a shoulder turned into the shaft that the pulley rests on. The pulley nut will hold the pulley in place, but they leave a gap between the pulley and the upper bearing. The upper bearing is just press-fit into the housing. When that fit is loose, the bearing can be pumped out of the housing.
@PainterD54
@PainterD54 4 күн бұрын
No, you won't push the bearing out of the housing with grease. It's bolted in and can't just slide out. You WILL pushout the outer seal however, so that will be the indication you are full of grease. The seals can be re-installed if not damaged. On my new mower, I just removed the seals and made sure the bearings were packed with grease, and put the seal back in, so they should last the life of the deck, no problem.

I don't agree with the viewer suggestion to add a drain cock. I've had bushes catch my tractor controls and change the deck height and move the throttle lever. A drain cock could be easily opened by a bush branch. You'd wouldn't know it until all of the oil drained onto your lawn, and the engine seized. The drain cap is far more secure,
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 4 күн бұрын
I agree with this. A drain cock would be easier to change the oil, but I think adds way too much risk of accidentally opening and draining the oil out by mistake. Thanks for watching!!

I wonder if just putting an inch of grease on top of the bottom bearing and putting vertical strips of my busted deck belt on top of that, then spraying foam insulation 1 inch below the bottom of the top bearing, letting it set then 1" grease on it would work..sort of like the gent here who suggested seals improvements using milk jug plastic, I like to repurpose to improve function and cut costs. Seems the weight of the belt strips and their spring load action would force more grease through thr dust shields. Greasing the top dust shield with a larger fender washer over it might help too. Smelling the rubber getting hot might cue for servicing? my sealed bearings from Amazon only lasting about 2 seasons but the OEM Poulan lasted 7. is Temkin a good brand bearing?

If they don't have a grease fitting at all, it's because it uses PRE-LUBRICATED, SEALED BEARINGS. Why bother? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I prefer serviceable bearings, because they may last longer with proper maintenance... but all-in-all, sealed bearing spindles have about the same overall cost over their service life, and eliminate the downtime of greasing. Nearly all commercial mowers have a serviceable (greasable) bearing alternative in the aftermarket. Most residential mowers have gone to sealed bearings, because they typically provide longer service life in residential use.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 6 күн бұрын
I think you may have missed the point. These 'sealed' bearings (actually just shielded bearings) are routinely supplied with little to no grease in the bearings. If you run them as-shipped, they'll fail in less than a season, prompting the user to buy more spindles. Get a little grease in the bearings, these spindles will last for years. The whole case presented here is to take a poorly designed spindle and make it functional by just getting some grease into the bearings. It works and makes it worth the bother.
@driverjamescopeland
@driverjamescopeland 6 күн бұрын
@dwcoffey - if I went and paid for a mower to have spindles fail in less than two years, I definitely wouldn't be shelling out the tool time to fix the manufacturer's problem. They can replace the spindles, at their own expense... not mine. This is precisely why I advise people not to buy residential-grade mowers. Used commercial mowers are sooooo much better. They're made of parts that are actually intended to function reliably. If a manufacturer used poorly supplied bearings or spindles, they don't deserve anyone's business.
@dwcoffey

Before starting this job drain the coolant, if not you'll have about a quart of coolant run off the moment you displace the tube. Also use a piece of harder paper to block the cylinder hole as you remove the o-ring to prevent it from falling into the cylinder hole.
@dwcoffey
@dwcoffey 9 күн бұрын
That has not been my experience at all. Only about a 1/4 cup of coolant, if that, will come out of the crossover tube. The o-rings are seated in grooves on the crossover tube and have to be picked out, so they won't slip off into the cooling jacket. Thanks for watching!

There is no way that grease will shove those bearings out as long as you have the thrust washer and pulley tightened down with that spindle nut, also those are not sealed bearings, you cannot pry open a sealed bearing like you did, those are debris covers and grease will pass on both sides
