Going from wanting to pull your hair out to dancing a jig with the disconnection of a module. Great find with a nicely documented diagnosis. Forscan certainly helped with the network topology.

Nice Video, very helpful and informative. I have a 2020 Transit 250 3.5 eco that I had to send to the Dealer due to it being under warranty. This one has both HS Can lines shorted to Ground 6&14 and it still runs but showed 120ohms on the network. I thought this would result in a non running engine and could not talk to any modules when it acted up but did when it first came in the shop. Any Ideas...

Great Video, gonna forward this to my mechanic, been dealing with the exact same issue with my 2018 Transit, dealership has replaced the Cluster twice but won't go any deeper into the MS Can Bus issues. How much time did you end up spending on this job? I'm thinking my issue may be up under the dash as it is triggered by heat/defrost being turned on and goes away when AC is run on the defrost setting.

I work at a ford fleet center in California and I have had a few transits with bus issues one on top of right front strut tower bolt touching short to ground another on the ceiling by dome light short to ground by after market builders. I have another right now with an instrument cluster going in and out randomly while driving never sitting. With all my experiences on these it's probably another short to ground. All transits are Amazon transit by the way

Love your videos, explain it so well and on this one amazing tenacity bravo 👏 Quick question, instead of testing every single line on MS can network and then disconnecting every module could you have shortened the circuit testing by splitting circuit in half then going forwards from that plug or backwards to narrow the time? I appreciate you were making a video and constantly getting disturbed but is this how you would of done it? Had to be the last unit and if you'd started there it would of been at the other end lol 😆 well done 👏 great diagnosis

Hi Steve, thought I’d let you know the outcome of the Ranger I mentioned, after some hours of studying wiring diagrams and a lot of head scratching I found out that the MS CAN problem was caused by the wiring going to the RTM module(Above the headlining)were shorted together(Twisted pair)ended up replacing the complete loom across the top of the headlining down to where it joins the connectors on the O/S windscreen pillar, to say the least this was a fucking total nightmare(original loom is glued to the headlining)would be a massive under statement

Nightmare on Elm street that one Steve , hope it's under warranty or the punter would have a proper fit at the diagnostic time finding that , punters haven't got a clue , I had an Audi A3 cabrio in yesterday, 1st inspection 68 plate 2.0 Tsi , owner said stop start not working, said I would have a look , save her taking to dealers, explained to her if battery low , she may get charged , checked charging rate , switch on dash all good , checked battery as she has not been using it a lot as she is 70 plus , 60 % charged put on smart charger , fully charged battery , service done , then saw she had heated rear screen on ,never going to work with that on , to protect car starting and power drain as you and I know , turned it off , and hey presto start stop , works fine , then spent the next 25 minutes trying to explain to a seriously old driver how it works , shes now decided to turn it off , what happened to 30 wires on a vehicle ,great in depth video , well done

@frankcarlsen4921
@frankcarlsen4921 4 жыл бұрын
Nice video but this is plain scary. What I mean is the way the wiring are done. The connectors are free hanging with no cable relief in a vibrating environment. Why isn't the cable housing fixed to the connector with for instance a cable relief grommet? If wiring was done like this in a bench instrument it would NEVER have passed inspection. The other thing is that these modules are places with no easy access. I don't know who designed this cabling but it was done with one purpose. Easy and cheap assembly and damned be maintenance and repair. Why are these components not located inside boxes with easier access?
@SYDiagnostics
@SYDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of the connectors in the video have been removed from their fixings which secure them to brackets or the body, some are disconnected too. Unfortunately automotive wiring is done on the cheap and bearing in mind the environment its contained in (heat,cold,vibration,water,fluids and located across metal frames and brackets) its pretty poor. I've yet to see strain relief on vehicle harnesses. If vehicle wiring was at least to a "standard" then I'd be out of a job ...lol. Thanks for watching & stay safe
@frankcarlsen4921
@frankcarlsen4921 4 жыл бұрын
@@SYDiagnostics Thanks for the honest reply. I am just happy with my old Caddy 2 that has very limited CAN systems. I have only worked with CAN bussed in conjunction with robotic cells and there you have the kind of wiring that would leave you without a job LOL. All cables are marked and nicely joined in sleeves with all kinds of guidance and cable relief. Going into nice dry and clean wiring cabinets where the individual modules are places in good sockets so they can be easily removed and tested. Considering that I once rewired and build the new wire rig for and Escort MK2 in a day, I kind of like the old way . That was everything behind the drivers seat and back to the trailer head from loose wires and connectors.
@SYDiagnostics
@SYDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
@@frankcarlsen4921 could you imagine how much extra the car would cost? It would be great for the likes of us who'd appreciate the quality of wiring and the components, but the average joe would sooner the manufacturer fit more usb sockets and bigger speakers instead. I've fitted new vehicle harnesses that have had poorly fitted wires in connectors or loose pin grips.......They certainly need to address the quality.
@frankcarlsen4921
@frankcarlsen4921 4 жыл бұрын
@@SYDiagnostics Once again thank you for the good reply! Actually it would not cost that much more if it was done at design time. If they made smart connectors with good strain relief and good sleeved cables they would cost less that 10% more (not total cost but on the rig itself). When you make like 5000 rigs at the time you can really get things made to specs with little overhead. It is all a question of priority. Right now they sell cars as cheap as possible and then make the difference on repairs. As long as the car will outlive the warranty they will be laughing all the way to the bank. By the way. How big is the difference on the wiring quality between the different car brands? Not to mention brands but are they all around the same quality?
