Thank you for this, especially the Denso. My takeaway is that it's an excellent filter for a standard 4K-5K mile OCI. When I bought the car new I thought the 5K OEM OCI was excessive but the oil is still so clean at 3K that it seemed wasteful to change it then. So between 4-5K has worked fine for 233K miles so far. It has seen AC Delcos before they discontinued PF1233, Purolators, and now this Denso Purolator variant.

I used Fram for years, usually the cheap ones as I've always done my own changes (living alone at 16yrs in a 1000 month apartment made it necessary financially) but always changed my oil every 3 to 5k km now that I've seen some of these cut open filter videos I've since switched to the super synthetic Fram as the couple extra bucks seem well worth it. 0:44 "It's kind of weird." There's five part numbers for the OE Honda filter depending on the region (e.g., North America, South East Asia, Japan, Europe etc), supplied respectively by: Filtech (USA), Honeywell (USA or Canada), Mahle (Thailand), Mahle (Japan) and Purflux (France). It looks like the Filtech and Purflux ones are discontinued now though. You'll mostly get the local Honeywell ones in North America, although sometimes Honda has surplus stock of the ones made in Japan so the dealers will sometimes have those instead.

Motorcraft for the win! For $4 at Walmart, you can't get a better filter anywhere. For the standard 5,000 mile oil change, the MC is the best and most economical. If you want to go for those longer oil change intervals then yes get a more expensive filter. But for the 5,000 mile oil change the MC can't be beat. I've gone over a quarter million miles on four different Ford vehicles (2 with the 4.6L V8, 1 with the 2.3L Duratec, and 1 with the 302 HO V8).

Ford filters are very good, and are not terribly expensive. Unless you can't get the one you need when you're buying supplies, there's no reason to go with anything else, at least for sane oil change intervals. sorry for coming back to such a old video but I've had some oil filter issues. I was using a wix xp and my oil pressure light would always flicker at startup. it was annoying. I never noticed it before using different ones. so I "downgraded" to a purolator regular one. the basic one for like 6 dollars at tractor supply. it's cheaper but it's so heavy and feels very well built. glossy paint. they put some effort into making it nice and heavy and durable. run em 5k easy and my oil pressure returned to nornal flow where the light goes out while its cranking. not .5 seconds after it idles. would not reccomend such a low micron filter on older rigs. even if it doesn't filter as excellent I'm happy with my pressure and it's not like I go long between changes anyway. the owners manual says change it between 3-5k miles. but the take away is purolator sells a good filter, extremely heavy and thick steel, well built and nice and flows good. I think there might be some issues on putting too modern of a filter on a older car. just what I noticed with my older car and it's oil pressure being lazy.

The first time I see a Toyota filter made by Purolator their usually made by Denso or Altrom, I guess it depends where you are in the USA or Canada and they change suppliers depending on where they get delivered, but I am ok with this, but what bothers me is all this excess glue on both ends cap, if the filter is on bypass mode and some of the glue detach from the end caps, it will go straight to bearing causing some damage. the bypass valve is made of Phenolic Resins.

That’s a great question. When I was a line tech I would see the original filter on cars and all it had on there was fomoco. I always wondered who made them and if there was anything special about them. One thing I can tell you is we knew right away if the filter never got a change. I remember once a turbo coupe T-Bird came in making noise in the valve train. Camshaft was wiped out. Car had original Fo Mo Co filter on it. Warranty was denied.

Great comparison! That A02 Honda filter you showed is in fact made by Fram/Honeywell but what exactly the differences are between Fram branded ones and the Honda branded ones I have no idea. I'd be willing to bet that the quality control is probably higher since it's an OEM grade part though. The discontinued A01 filters are made by Filtech and are often said to be way better than the A02, but I haven't seen any data showing they are any more effective or that the new A02 filter is in some way problematic or inadequate so it's all speculation.

@@FordBossMe You would know better than I would since I never cut open a Honda or a Fram filter. What I meant to say is although the filters are likely made in the same factory and obviously use a lot of the same parts, I think the OEM filter is less likely to leave the factory with a manufacturing defect than a Fram branded one. I know people who work for Denso, Delphi, Bosch, etc and they all said that their OEM parts often have to pass more strict quality control standards than their aftermarket parts and are often made on entirely different assembly lines. Another difference is manufacturers often specify certain parts to be used. For example, if Honda has Denso produce alternators for a specific model, they might specify that they want only brand X bearings to be used. So while Denso can use whatever bearings they want in their aftermarket alternators and change suppliers at will, they must keep using the specified brand in their OEM units if that's what the contract specifies. You may know that but I didn't and thought it was interesting. Keep up the great videos, love your channel! 👍

I wonder if the Baldwin philosophy is to have a weak by-pass valve so as to avoid any chance of flow restriction while still doing some filtering. Filters which claim to be able to go down to10-20 microns may well clog up sooner. It would be interesting to see the engineering data on what size and type of particle is actually harmful to bearings and cams. A zillion years ago, engines didn't have filtration and had OCI's around 1000 miles.
@Resistculturaldecline2 жыл бұрын
A big reason is start-up in cold conditions. Syrupy oil doesn't like going through 20 micron filter at full gusto. A minute or so of partially unfiltered oil won't harm anything, and is way better than not enough oil.

Take apart a Champ filter. Champ, in the past , made Mopar, Toyota, some AC Delco and more OE filters. Also STP, Dutsch? (Auto zone) and more. What is the micron rating of the filters and the burst pressure? I was told that the Motorcraft filters have a 80 percent filter rate because Ford wants more flow, your the Ford tech, tell us the truth please! Oh, a fl-1a has 3/4 threads and will fit on a 5.0, 5.8 ETC. A fl-820 fits a 4.6 and has metric threads. Thanks for all of your research and info.

Some of the Honda filters are made by Honeywell/Fram (same company or atleast use to be) and some are made by Filtech. No rhyme or reason you will just get one or the other. The Filtech oil filters are MUCH better quality. When I worked at a Honda dealership if we got in the Filtech oil filter word would get out and people would come buy 4 or 5 of them just so they wouldn't have to track one down later. The majority where Honeywell/Fram though.

Thsts what I was thinking, I've ordered honda filters from Amazon and I've gotten 2 different versions from the dealership ones I have access to. The honda filter part number is 15400-RTA-003. I work as a honda tech in Saskatchewan Canada and our filters come in a small light cardboard box, which is then sealed with a plastic wrapping around the filter. The filters we get are made in Japan, and near the instructions on the filter say "Mahle Tennex Corporation"

There are two Honda filters. The 003 is for the 2 litre and up, the A02 is for the smaller engines. You got the A02 and yes it is made by Fram. Mahle Tenex makes the 003. Filtech is the one that comes from the factory ONLY. Talking about the Japanese engines is a whole other can of worms.
@94eg8h-t42 жыл бұрын
There are a few different Honda filters, but only 2 applications. There is the S2000 filter and the one for everything else. The one for everything but the S2000 has had a few different part numbers. There is/was an A01 which is made by Filtech and these were briefly available a few years ago. The A02s were very common for years. A few years ago the 003 replaced it.
