Perhaps the greatest irony of the Fordlandia debacle, is that the whole of Joseph Conrad's literary output was current at the time of Ford's ill-fated decision to attempt it. Had Henry Ford simply read Heart of Darkness, which was published in 1899, perhaps he might have avoided his egotistic neocolonial impulses, and the subsequent deaths of so many people, pointlessly, via this Quixotic quest.
