My dad had a 1950 Ford 4 door sedan, what a great car. Good old flathead V8, loved that car. Dad shed a few tears when he had to part with it. My first car was a 1958 Ford. I remembering ordering some back up lights from J C Whitney, I was surprised when I opened the box to see two opaque lenses and a some wiring. It converted the two inboard brake lights 4:07 to back up lights! All kinds of people stopped me and asked where I got them!

Man, back in those days, for an affordable car, Ford produced some of the best styling of ANY car! I just looooved the '49 - 52' Fords with their little "flatties". They were so cute! The '53 and '54's were cool too. Then came the '55 and '56's! Talk about STYLE! In my book, they had it all over Chevy for those years. Then the '57-'60 Fords, which were OK, but didn't hold a candle to the older models. I could go on, but the '61 was very decently styled, as was the '62. '63 was OK, but the '64 was a killer! That '64 Galaxie 500 XL styling was a show stopper, and with the 390 engine, it was the complete package! After 1964, I thought the full bodied Chevy's had the edge, and it stayed that way throughout the sixties. After the early '70' they started to look a lot alike and then federal fuel emission standards killed the horsepower from about '71 on and it was all over for awhile...

Every model year in the 50s was distinctive - you could readily tell a 57 from a 58. And the T-Birds 1955-1965 were the coolest cars ever. Often drove my uncle's 1965 - smooth, quiet and quick. It rode a little low so you had to be careful on driveway ramps.

That was fun to watch & the music sure added to it! I remember the old series from 1987 “ Crime Story” with Dennis Farina, they had a few all black ‘59 Fairlanes & some ‘59-‘60 Fords made up like Chicago PD Cars. I think in the first series episode they even banged up a couple of the ‘59’s, apparently there were more around back then so it wasn’t a concern about getting some more if needed!

Ya know, i truly hate it when people make nasty jokes about Ford Cars and Trucks. I love Fords, especally of this time. They were beautiful cars, just as beautiful as Chevys. The one especally that got me is the 58 Custom 300, BEAUTIFUL car. Then there was the 49, 50 and 51 Ford cars there that also were really beautiful. Even the earlier Fords of the 1940's and 30's were beautiful to.
I liked he 65's and 66's the most. Jay Leno has a beautiful Red 66 Galaxie 500 2 door, check it out sometime on Jay Leno's Garage.

In addition to Louis' catch of the mislabeled Country Sedan/Country Squire wagons, the Fordor at 2:19 is not a Mainline (cheapest trim level). It's a Crestline (top trim level), easily identified by the rear door trim: 3 chrome hash pieces at the bottom and the Ford crest next to the word "Crestline". Other giveaways that it's not a Mainline are chrome trim on the side, windshield & doors, most likely would have been a "6" not a V-8, among a couple of other chrome clues. Since that looks like a factory or advertising pic, if it were a Mainline it sure wouldn't be dressed up in white walls, full wheel covers and fender skirts! Regardless, nice pics!

Hello folks, I was wondering if somebody out there I might know the answer to this question, does anybody know how the undercarriages of these cars from the 1954-59 were painted? I know the frame was usually flat black, but was the underbelly body color or black primer as well? I know that body color overspray would sometimes get on the belly, but I'm pretty sure the car underneath wasn't painted correct? I build scale models, and I want to make sure I get it right. Thank you.

Beautiful cars. I love the "Shoebox Fords". Manufacturers have convinced Americans that they NEED a crossover, so now they are putting all of their resources into crossovers and SUVs and are making a great sedan a thing of the past. Why is it that a 2 door sedan used to be plenty of car for a family of 5 but now everyone thinks they need a Suburban. Heaven forbid that a kid have to crawl into the back seat. In the 50's there was 6 body styles from one car, I am sure they made a lot more money on those cars back then than they don't now.

Twice you misidentify County Sedan Wagons as County Squires. There were three Ford wagons the 2 and 4 door County Wagons. The County Sedan, which had the same 2 or 4 doors, and was in the Fairlane trim, and the County Squire with the faux wood trim. All came in 6 or 9 passenger seating.
@Al-thecarhistorian4 жыл бұрын
Louis Brizzolara Actually, Ranch wagons were 2-door, 6 passenger Ford wagons. Country Sedans were 4-door 6 or 9 passenger Ford wagons. Country Squires were 4-door 9 passenger Ford wagons. Model year 1959 was the only exception. That model year there was a 4-door 6 passenger Ranch wagon. Also in 1959, The Country Sedan was available as a 2-door, 6 passenger Ford wagon. Don't forget the 1956 Parklane wagon (a Fairlane trimmed 2-door, 6 passenger wagon) and the 1957 and 1958 Del Rio (a Custom 300 level trimmed 2-door, 6 passenger wagon).
